Engine Does Not Start Due to Inducement Restart Counter Being Maxed Out
Engine will crank but not start, while inducement related fault codes are present.
Fault Codes: 3714, 3712, 4135, 3931, 6254 or 6255.
Verification/Confirmation
Verify that this application uses shutdown as final inducement using the recommended
Cummins® electronic service tool:
Navigate to: Features and parameters, then Final Inducement, then Restart Counter.
The Restart Counter should be available if the application is using shutdown as final
inducement. Power generation and fixed speed applications typically use shutdown as
final inducement.
Verify unit has had Fault Code 3714, 3712, 4135, 3931, 6254 and/or 6255 in the past four
hours of engine operation.
Resolution
If a fault code that drives final inducement is set, the restart counter starts at zero and allows
limited number of restarts, as determined by the Maximum Restart Limit. The default setting
allows four restarts for fifteen minutes. These restarts are meant to allow the service
technician to trouble shoot any existing fault codes. The restart counter increments by one
after every restart. The engine will not start once the restart limit is exhausted.
Use the recommended Cummins® electronic service tool to update the final inducement
counter by performing the following actions:
Navigate to Features and parameters, Final Inducement, Restart Counter.
If the Restart Counter is greater than or equal to Maximum Restart Limit, reduce the
Restart Counter by one.
