Introduction
Some 2017 – 2018 model year iA, 2016 – 2020 Yaris Sedan Mexico-produced, and 2020 Yaris
Hatchback Mexico-produced vehicles may exhibit a squeal/squeak noise from the rear during
brake application. The cause of this condition is an insufficient amount of grease on the mounting
points and backing plates of the rear brake assemblies. Follow the Repair Procedure in this
bulletin to address this condition.

1. Confirm the condition exists.
Does the vehicle exhibit a squeal/squeak noise from the rear during braking application?

YES — Continue to step 2.

NO — This bulletin does NOT apply. Continue diagnosis using the applicable
Repair Manual.
2. Remove the rear brake drum and shoe assemblies.

4. Apply grease to the three ledge surfaces
of the backing plate while lifting the
brake shoe.

NOTE
Grease application can be easily performed
with a cotton swab.
5. Apply grease on the bottom side of the
brake shoe anchor points.

6. Reinstall the rear brake shoes and drum assemblies.
