For Classic vehicles with air-cooled flat engines, Porsche recommends special engine oils,
which are not included in the list provided above.
Viscosity:
The viscosity of an engine oil is specified by the SAE viscosity class.
The first number and the letter W (winter) identify the viscosity at low temperatures. This means that an oil
with the specification “5W” is more viscous than oil with the specification “0W”.
The second number indicates the viscosity at high temperatures. This means that an oil with the specification “40” is less viscous than oil with the specification “50”.
Multi-grade oils are identified by both viscosity specifications, e.g. SAE 0W-40, 5W-40 or 5W-50.
Examples:
SAE 0W-40 and 5W-40 oils have the same viscosity at high temperatures, but at low temperatures, the
“5W” oil is more viscous.
SAE 5W-40 and 5W-50 oils have the same viscosity at low temperatures, but at higher temperatures, the
oil with viscosity class “40” is less viscous.
Miscibility:
All engine oils approved by Porsche can be mixed provided they are of the same Porsche oil
specification. This means that it is not necessary to flush the engine when the oil is changed if another

same brand and type of oil should be used for topping up between oil change intervals if possible.
