Symptom/Vehicle Issue: Customer complaint may include an overfilled engine
crankcase after an oil change.
Discussion:
Updated oil level check procedure for 3.6L Pentastar Upgrade engines
The 3.6L Pentastar Upgrade engine typically uses a smaller oil pan for most
applications versus the 3.6L Pentastar Classic, resulting in an engine oil capacity of
five (5) quarts for the Upgrade engine.
NOTE: There are currently a couple of exceptions to the above statement: 2016-tocurrent Jeep Grand Cherokee (WK) and Dodge Durango (WD), equipped with the 3.6L
Upgrade engine have a unique oil pan size and configuration that give them an engine
oil capacity of six (6) quarts.
Please be sure to check published service information to verify
specifications for the specific vehicle you are working on as as oil pan
sizes and configurations may change.
If you are unsure whether or not a 3.6L Pentastar engine is an Upgrade or a Classic,
an easy way to tell the difference between the two engines is that the Upgrade has an
EGR cooler mounted to one of the cylinder heads, and a variable valve lift (VVL)
solenoid on the front of each valve cover.

Verification: The engine oil level should be checked five minutes after a warmed-up
engine has been shut off.
Engine crankcase overfilling can occur if not enough time is allowed for the
engine oil to drain back into the oil pan.
Ensure the oil level is correct before releasing the vehicle to the customer.
