40 Chattering/skipping sensation in front axle on tight turns 40 20 08 2017148/11 June 26, 2020. Supersedes Technical Service Bulletin Group 40 number 17-69 dated July 11, 2017 for reasons listed below. Model(s) Year VIN Range Vehicle-Specific Equipment R8 2007 - 2021 All Not Applicable Condition REVISION HISTORY Revision Date Purpose 11 - Revised header (Added model year) 10 07/11/2017 Revised header (Added model code) 9 06/29/2017 Revised header (Added model year) Customer states: A chattering/skipping sensation is felt in the front axle during tight, slow-speed turns (such as parking maneuvers) could occur under the following conditions: Tires are cold or ambient temperatures are low. Road surface is wet/dirty. The vehicle has been parked for an extended period of time. Technical Background The R8 has the steering dynamic of a sports car. The inner and outer wheels are turned at approximately the same steering angle to ensure even power distribution through the front self-locking differential during high speed cornering. This steering dynamic minimizes understeer and ensures vehicle stability in high-speed turns. Under normal conditions, when the vehicle is maneuvered through tight turns at slow speeds (such as while parking), the steering angle difference between the inner and outer wheel is not noticeable because the side wall flex of the tire is sufficient to compensate. Contact with the road surface is maintained. However, under certain conditions (such as cold weather, wet/dirty pavement, or a long parking period), a front tire can scrub. The customer may report a shudder or a skipping sensation felt in the steering/front suspension of the vehicle during slow-speed parking maneuvers. This is normal performance for the sports car steering dynamic in the R8, and no repairs are required. Page 1 of 2 © 2020 Audi of America, Inc. All rights reserved.
