Condition
A vehicle may have a concern of running poor and stalling. No trouble codes may be
set referencing this condition. Fuel trims around -20% may be observed on both
banks. Engine oil level will be found over full and have a fuel odor. It will be found
that the Engine oil is diluted with fuel.
Small gas engines (SGE) May only have the engine oil level over full and have a fuel
odor. It will be found that the Engine oil is diluted with fuel.
Cause
This concern is caused by marshalling the vehicle around the lot before it is sold
and/or short driver cycles.
Correction:
Record the fuel trims and oil level.
Change the oil and lter, drive the vehicle and evaluate the fuel trims and record.
Note: Do not replace the fuel pump for this condition
If the fuel trims return to normal return the vehicle to the customer.
If the issue is not corrected by the instructions listed above, follow published SI diagnostics for the concern.
Note: During cold starts, it is normal for some fuel to enter the crankcase. When the engine warms up fuel in the
crankcase boils o and is reintroduced to the combustion chamber. In extreme cases where the customer drive
cycle is short, or excessive engine idling is present, the engine may not be able to reach the temperature required
to boil o fuel. To combat this occurrence it may be necessary to minimize idle time in addition to mixing in
routine rural/highway drives. Barring the above, more frequent oil changes may be required.
This PI will be updated as information is gathered.
