FIZZING / GURGLING NOISES FROM CENTER VENT IN DASHBOARD
MODEL
E-Series
F44
Model Description
2 Series Gran Coupe
SITUATION
The Air Conditioning system is cooling the vehicle interior. The customer hears a fizzing / gurgling noise
coming from the center ventilation grille in the vehicle interior.
The noise can be reproduced under the following conditions:
Allow the engine to run in idle
Radio turned off
Air conditioning active
Blower speed 1-2 selected
CAUSE
Gas bubbles in the air conditioning refrigerant circuit are heard as they pass thru the expansion valve.
Uncondensed refrigerant (gas bubbles) can occur due to excessively low operating pressure in the air
conditioning system (i.e., too little refrigerant).
CORRECTION
Wrap the expansion valve piping in butyl tape
Refill refrigerant
PROCEDURE
Check A/C system operation.
If the A/C system is not operational or does not function properly due to other issues then this
SIB does not apply. Check for leaks and repair if and as necessary.
If the A/C system is operational then connect A/C service station.
Draw off (evacuate) refrigerant completely.
If system is slightly low top up to 540 grams (+/- 20 grams)
If system is very low proceed with air conditioning system leak diagnosis/repair prior to refilling
Then reassess the noise.
If the noise can no longer be reproduced, then the vehicle can be returned to the customer
If the noise is still present, proceed as follows.
Remove the evaporator
Observe the repair instructions when removing the evaporatorREP 64 11 197 Remove and install heating and air-conditioning unit
REP 64 51 591 Remove and install/replace evaporator (heating and air-conditioning unit removed)
Wrap butyl tape fully around both evaporator pipes.
Cut the butyl into 30-40 mm sections and leave the backing paper on when you wrap the pipes

Wrap into a figure 8 pattern, pushing between the pipes so the butyl sticks to itself and fully
surrounds each pipe while making sure to overlap the butyl.
Then remove the paper backing as you complete one wrap around both pipes
This may require up to 2.5 meters of butyl
