SITUATION
This situation ONLY affects vehicles without option code 402 (Panoramic moonroof).
After the vehicle is left in the hot sun and/or high temperatures with the sunroof in the vented position, the
sunroof may reverse (anti-trap activates) when closing.
CAUSE
Temperature changes can lead to unfavorable tolerances in the sunroof, leading to false anti-trapping.
CORRECTION
One or more of the following may be necessary:
Check adjustment of the sunroof glass panel
Check adjustment of the sunroof frame
Re-initialize the sunroof
Lubricate the sunroof perimeter seal
PROCEDURE
1. Remove the sunroof perimeter seal following repair instructions REP 54 12 117 “Replacing seal for glass
slide/tilt roof panel”.
2. Measure the gap between the sunroof
glass panel and the roof as shown at 6 points
1a, 1b, 1c, 2a, 2b, 2c.
Gap 1a should match gap 2a.
Gap 1 should match gap 2.
Gap 1b should match gap 2b.
If the gaps measure differently side to side,
continue to step 3. Otherwise, continue to
step 5.
3. Lower the headliner to check the position of
the sunroof frame using alignment tool 2 354
941 as shown.
Ensure the alignment tool fits easily and
completely into the alignment bores. If the
tool does not align correctly in the frame,
loosen the frame bolts, adjust the frame as
necessary, and torque the bolts to 9.5 Nm.

Note: The alignment tool will insert vertically,
without tilting, if the sunroof frame is correctly
aligned.
4. Re check the gaps from step 2 again to ensure they now match.
5. Similar to the measurements taken in step
2, compare the gap measurements at the
front and rear of the glass.
Gap 3a should be 1 mm smaller than gap 4a.
Gap 3 should be 1 mm smaller than gap 4.
Gap 3b should be 1 mm smaller than gap 4b.
If the gaps are incorrect, adjust the sunroof
glass panel following repair instructions REP
54 12 003 “Adjusting glass slide/tilt
sunroof panel” and continue to step 6. If the
gaps are correct, continue to step 6.
6. Re-install a new perimeter seal following repair instructions REP 54 12 117 “Replacing seal for glass
slide/tilt roof panel”.
7. Perform a manual initialization (long hold of the sunroof button) WITHOUT a battery charger attached.
8. Coat the replacement perimeter seal using BMW Group Lubricant PF 1-(50 gr) P/N 83 23 0 309 627.
9. Completely re-assemble the vehicle and test drive to ensure no wind noise is present after repairs.
