I. Non-Hazardous Fluid Analysis Program Information Before sample collection, it is necessary to distinguish between ‘hazardous’ and ‘non-hazardous’ relative to the substance for which analysis is sought. ‘Hazardous’ refers to fuel and other highly flammable contents while nonhazardous refers to less volatile fluids collected in a designated 4 oz. receptacle provided by Southwest Research Institute (SwRI), only. Fuel (hazardous) collection uses different, larger collection kits provided by PCNA, only. If ‘non-hazardous’ collection is appropriate for the analysis required, please contact SwRI through the contact SwRI Contact: Janet L.S. The respective Porsche Service Department is responsible for requesting and stocking these sample kits. PCNA provides the kits at no cost. Figure 1 - SwRI 4 oz. Sample Kit Sample Collection It is essential to collect a full, 4 oz. sample each time, and to eliminate potential contamination during the sample retrieval process. Collect the samples as the fluid drains or otherwise pulls from the vehicle system. When possible, it is also best to retrieve the sample while warm or immediately after the fluid circulates in the system. This will help ensure that any particles or debris present during operation also exist in the sample. Never collect or extract samples from a container using a device already contaminated with another material or substance. Samples of hygroscopic fluids such as hydraulic brake fluid may absorb enough moisture to compromise the analysis if exposed to the open air for more than 30 min. If samples are inadvertently contaminated, please include a comment noting this and any other discrepancy on the sample label. PCNA is NOT responsible for samples submitted to SwRI for analysis without authorization provided upon request to engineeringreview@ porsche.us. Sample Kit The sample kit for hazardous fluids includes a sample bottle and cap, and a shipping box with room for four bottles. The hazardous fluid collection kit also comes with a warning sticker to indicate flammable contents as well as which side of the box should be facing up. PCNA will ship a fuel sample kit overnight. Collect sample in accordance with the enclosed kit instruction. Depending on the hazmat shipping status, the dealer or SWRI will be responsible for transport.
