Technical Service Bulletin 27 Battery testing and charging - vehicles with BDM (J367) 27 13 18 2023282/3 October 4, 2013. Supersedes Technical Service Bulletin Group 27 number 12-10 dated February 13, 2012 for reasons listed below. Model(s) Year A5/S5 2008 - 2014 A4 2009 - 2014 A5/S5 Cab. 2010 - 2014 Audi Q5 2009 - 2014 Audi Q7 2009 - 2014 A6 2009 - 2014 VIN Range Vehicle-Specific Equipment All Not Applicable Condition REVISION HISTORY Revision Date Purpose 3 - Revised header data (Added model year) 2 2/13/2012 Revised header data (Added model years) 1 5/5/2010 Original publication Battery testing and charging for vehicles equipped with a Battery Data Manager (BDM - J367). Technical Background When the InCharge 940 is used as a battery charger in auto mode, it performs a battery condition test and may prematurely fail the battery if the charging takes place at the jumper posts in the engine compartment. This is due to the added resistance in the system between the battery and jumper posts. When the InCharge 940 is used as a battery charger in manual mode, the battery condition test is not performed. Technical Service Bulletin Service Testing the battery Follow Guided Fault Finding battery test plan. Charging the battery Connect the Midtronics INC-940 diagnostic charging station. Instructions for both Auto Mode and Manual Mode follow. AUTO MODE: 1. Connect the InCharge 940 positive cable clamp to the positive battery post. 2. Connect the negative cable clamp to the vehicle’s negative battery cable downstream at the body attachment point (Figure 1 and Figure 2). Tip: This connection ensures J367 remains in the loop so that it may provide battery charge data to the Gateway (J533) as the J367 is clamped directly to the battery negative post. Figure 1. Negative battery cable at the body attachment point (white arrow), shown in an Audi Q5. Figure 2. InCharge 940 negative cable clamped at the body attachment point (white arrow) and location of BDM, J376 (red arrow), shown in an Audi Q5. 3.
