Condition
A customer may come in with any of the following concerns; SES/MIL on with any of
P0016, P0017, P0018 or P0019 setting, ticking noise, coolant loss, or the oil looks
very dark or black.
Cause
The cause for this concern may be coolant contaminating the engine oil due to
internal porosity on the cylinder head at the outer bolt area.
Correction
If you encounter any of the previous concerns, look at the oil to see if it is dark and / or sticky feeling.
Remove both camshaft covers for access to the top of the cylinder heads.
NOTE: You may need to clean the area if excessive thick oil is present.
Pressure test the cooling system with up to 20 PSI while watching the center two head bolt area on the exhaust
side of the heads.
Observe for 15 to 30 minutes watching for bubbles like the pictures shown below.
If no bubbles show then leave the pressure tester on for an additional 24 to 48 hours as we have seen some very
small porosity cause this condition.
In this case the a ected cylinder head will need to be replaced.
