Introduction
Some 2016 – 2023 model year Tacoma vehicles may exhibit what customers describe as a
1 – 3-second whistle noise from the HVAC system when the air conditioning system is ON. The
whistle noise may occur as the compressor cycles on and off and is more prevalent with increased
engine RPM during hot ambient temperatures. Follow the Repair Procedure in this bulletin to
address this condition.

APPLICABLE WARRANTY
 This repair is covered under the Toyota Basic Warranty. This warranty is in effect for 36 months
or 36,000 miles, whichever occurs first, from the vehicle’s in-service date.
 Warranty application is limited to occurrence of the specified condition described in
this bulletin.

Repair Procedure
1. Confirm the condition exists.
A. Turn the vehicle ON.
B. Leave the vehicle running in Park (P) and ensure the brake is firmly applied.
C. Turn the air conditioning ON and set the temperature to low.
D. Slowly bring the engine speed to 3,000 RPM and hold it at 3,000 RPM until the
compressor begins to cycle on and off.
Is there a 1 – 3-second whistle noise heard from the air conditioning system each time the
compressor cycles on and off during hot ambient temperatures?

YES — Continue to step 2.

NO — This bulletin does NOT apply. Continue diagnosis using the applicable
Repair Manual.
2. Remove the air conditioning unit.
Refer to TIS, applicable model and model year Repair Manual:

2016 / 2017 / 2018 / 2019 / 2020 / 2021 / 2022 / 2023 Tacoma:
Vehicle Interior – Heating/Air Conditioning – “Air Conditioning:
Air Conditioning Unit: Removal”
3. Remove the evaporator core.
Refer to TIS, applicable model and model year Repair Manual:

2016 – 2023 Tacoma:
Vehicle Interior – Heating/Air Conditioning – “Air Conditioning:
Air Conditioning Unit: Disassembly”
4. Install the NEW evaporator core.
Refer to TIS, applicable model and model year Repair Manual:

2016 – 2023 Tacoma:
Vehicle Interior – Heating/Air Conditioning – “Air Conditioning:
Air Conditioning Unit: Reassembly”
5. Reinstall the air conditioning unit.
Refer to TIS, applicable model and model year Repair Manual:

2016 / 2017 / 2018 / 2019 / 2020 / 2021 / 2022 / 2023 Tacoma:

6. Confirm the whistle noise is no longer present by repeating step 1.
