SITUATION
Upon opening or closing (i.e., folding in or out) the exterior mirror assembly, a creaking sound is heard from
either the driver and/or passenger side.
Note: Please see the attached video V51 03 23.
CAUSE
Debris trapped inside of the exterior mirror assembly pivot area.
CORRECTION
Clean and re-grease the bottom metal plates at the pivot point of the exterior mirror assembly.
PROCEDURE
1. Remove the mirror glass and the cover cap following the repair instructions listed in ISTA/AIR (51 16 041).
Note: Take caution when unplugging any connectors behind the mirror glass.
Caution step:
Verify that no clips are damage/broken
2. Remove the supporting ring by removing
the 4 screws.
Note: Fold the mirror assembly
completely outward to easily remove
the supporting ring using a “fishbone”
tool.
Caution step:
Verify there is no paint damage on the
component
Verify that no clips are
damaged/broken
3. Remove the lower housing section by
removing the three screws.

Note: Fold the mirror assembly
completely inward to easily remove the
lower housing section.
Caution step:
Verify no paint damage on the
component.
Verify no clips are damaged/broken.
4. Using a fishbone tool, remove the mirror
base cap.
Caution step:
Verify there is no paint damage on the
component
5. Clean and remove any debris from the
mirror assembly.
Note: Compressed air can be used.

6. Re-grease the bottom metal plates at the
pivot point with lubricating grease
Kluebersynth LF 44-22.
Note: Manually fold the mirror
assembly forward and backward for
even distribution of the grease.
7. Reassemble the exterior mirror.
Note: Cycle the exterior mirror assembly a few times using the exterior mirror switch.
