QUALITY ACTION CAMPAIGN BULLETIN Steering Wheel Replacement Attention: Dealer Principal, Sales, Service & Parts Managers Affected Models/Years: Reference: P3A02 Date: June 15, 2023 Affected Population: Dealer Inventory: SERVICE COMM Activation date: Stop Sale In Effect: NA 88 June 15, 2023 NO 2023 ARIYA (FE0) *****Dealer Announcement***** Nissan is conducting a dealer inventory quality action to replace the steering wheel on specific 2023 Nissan ARIYA vehicles identified in Service Comm and National Service History. The sensor mat on the steering wheel may have been damaged and may not allow the vehicle to shift to ProPILOT mode. *****What Dealers Should Do***** PLEASE FOLLOW THE ATTACHED INSTRUCTIONS: 1. Verify if vehicles are affected by this quality action using Service Comm or DBS National Service History – Open Campaigns I.D. P3A02 • New vehicles in dealer inventory can also be identified using DBS (Sales-> Vehicle Inventory, and filter by Open Campaign). Refer to NPSB 15-460 for additional information • Please continue to check newly arriving inventory for campaign applicability. 2. Use the attached procedure to remedy any vehicles affected by this quality action prior to sale. 3. Parts for this quality action are on restriction and can be ordered through DBS. Use the VIN and EPC to determine the correct steering wheel part number. 4. Once remedied, dealers should submit the applicable warranty claim for the action performed so it can be closed in Service Comm and release the vehicle for sale. ***** Dealer Responsibility ***** It is the dealer’s responsibility to check Service Comm or DBS National Service History – Open Campaign using the appropriate campaign ID for the inspection status on each affected vehicle currently in new vehicle inventory. Total Customer Satisfaction CAMPAIGN ID: P3A02 | Original Document P3A02– 2023 ARIYA STEERING WHEEL REPLACEMENT Service Procedure Always observe the following items for preventing accidental activation. Before servicing, power switch OFF, disconnect 12V battery negative terminal and wait for 3 minutes or more (discharges electricity held in the additional power supply circuit of the air bag diagnosis sensor unit). Refer to Precautions for Removing Battery Terminal. Always work from the side of air bag module. Never work in front of it. Never use air tools or electric tools for servicing. For installing/removing the driver air bag module harness connector, insert thin screwdriver wrapped in tape into notch, lift lock and remove connector. Install connector with lock raised, and push lock into the connector. After installing the connector, check that the lock is pushed securely into it. Always place the driver air bag module with pad side facing upward. Never impact the driver air bag module. Replace driver air bag module if it has been dropped or sustained an impact. Never insert any foreign objects (screwdriver, etc.) into the driver air bag module. Never disassemble the driver air bag module. Never expose the driver air bag module to temperatures exceeding 90 °C (194 °F). Never allow oil, grease, detergent, or water to come in contact with the driver air bag module. 1/5 P3A02 1. Disconnect the 12v battery negative cable from the battery current sensor. Battery current sensor Loosen and remove the battery negative cable from the battery current sensor Lift the cable from the battery current sensor and place next to the battery Negative battery cable To help avoid accidental airbag deployment, injury, or vehicle damage, wait a minimum of 3 minutes before continuing to Step 2. Figure 1 2. Remove the driver air bag module. Refer to ESM section: RESTRAINTS - SRS AIRBAG - REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION - DRIVER AIR BAG MODULE – Removal and Installation 3. Replace the steering wheel. Refer to ESM: STEERING - STEERING SYSTEM - REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION STEERING WHEEL – Removal & Installation Discard the original steering wheel bolt Torque the NEW steering wheel bolt to 44 N•m (4.5 kg-m, 32 ft-lb) Do NOT reuse the steering wheel bolt Do NOT rotate the spiral cable with the steering wheel removed. Doing so will damage the part. Spiral cable Figure 2 2/5 P3A02 4. Check for looseness between the steering wheel and the steering column. Hold the steering wheel at the 3 o’clock and 9 o’clock position (Figure 3) Rock the steering wheel back and forth Steering wheel bolt Figure 3 5. Was there any movement or looseness between the steering wheel and the steering column? NO – Continue to Step 6 YES – Using a suitable torque wrench, torque the steering wheel bolt and perform Step 4 again. o Bolt torque: 44 N•m (4.5 kg-m, 32 ft-lb) Paint mark 6. Using a suitable paint pen/marker, place a match mark on the steering wheel bolt and the steering wheel as shown in Figure 4. Figure 4 7. Reinstall the driver air bag module. Refer to the ESM: RESTRAINTS > SRS AIRBAG > REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION > DRIVER AIR BAG MODULE > Removal and Installation 3/5 P3A02 8. Reconnect the negative battery cable to the battery current sensor. Torque the nut to 8.0 N●m (0.82 kg-m, 71 in-lbs) 9. Verify the horn operates normally. If the horn does not operate, disconnect the 12v battery, remove the driver air bag and reconnect the horn wire to the driver air bag 10. Using CONSULT 4, perform the adjustment of the steering angle sensor neutral position. Refer to the ESM: BRAKES > BRAKE CONTROL SYSTEM > WITH VDC > BASIC INSPECTION > BRAKE CONTROL SYSTEM > ADJUSTMENT OF STEERING ANGLE SENSOR NEUTRAL POSITION > Work Procedure 11. Using CONSULT 4, perform steering torque calibration in the ADAS 2 control unit. Refer to the ESM: CRUISE CONTROL & DRIVER ASSISTANCE > DRIVER ASSISTANCE SYSTEM > ADAS CONTROL UNIT > BASIC INSPECTION > STEERING TORQUE CALIBRATION > Work Procedure 12. Erase all DTCs set during the steering angle sensor neutral position adjustment and the steering torque calibration. Hint: In some instances, the vehicle will need to rest with the vehicle off for several minutes, to allow DTCs to go to a past condition.
