Technical Service Bulletin Technical Background In order to provide effective lubrication and cooling of internal engine components, all internal combustion engines consume a certain amount of engine oil. Oil consumption varies from engine to engine and may change significantly over the life of the engine. Typically, engines with specified break-in periods consume more oil during the break-in period, and the oil consumption will stabilize after the break-in period. Refer to the Owner’s Manual for specific break-in procedures. Under normal conditions, the rate of oil consumption depends on the quality and viscosity of the oil, the RPM at which the engine is operated, the ambient temperature, and road conditions. Additional factors are the amount of oil dilution from water condensation or fuel residue and the oxidation level of the oil. Under certain driving conditions, internal engine pressure conditions in the 3.0 TFSI engine can negatively influence the rate of oil consumption. This can occur while the vehicle is operated in city driving conditions, for example: stop and go traffic with extended idle periods. Production Solution Crankcase pressure reduction starting with model year 2013. Service Upon customer complaint of excessive engine oil consumption, proceed as follows: 1. Replace crankcase pressure regulating valve (follow ELSA >> 17 >> cover with oil separator) with part number 06E103547H. Tip: Capture coolant for reuse. Warning: Do not perform the SVM code while the fuel lines are not connected, because the fuel pump may be activated. This is to prevent fuel from spraying out of any open lines. 2. Update the Engine Control Module software using SVM action code as listed in the table below these instructions. Follow all instructions in TSB 2011732 00 Software Version Management (SVM), operating instructions. © 2013 Audi of America, Inc. Page 2 of 6 All rights reserved. Technical Service Bulletin 3. Perform Oil Consumption Test, part one: Ensure that vehicle is on a level surface, then follow the path below to start electronic oil consumption measurement, following all instructions closely: Powertrain >> xxxx – Engine >> 01 – On Board Diagnostic (OBD) capable systems >> 01 – Simos Fuel Injection and Ignition System TFSI >> Functions – engine >> 01 – Oil Consumption measurement (electronic measurement) 4. Advise the customer to return the vehicle to the dealership for part two of the Oil Consumption Test if the low oil level warning light illuminates. The customer should not add any oil. 5. If the customer returns the vehicle to the dealership due to the low oil level warning light illuminating, perform Oil Consumption Test, part two: Ensure that vehicle is on a level surface, then follow the path below to start electronic oil consumption measurement, following all instructions closely: Powertrain >> xxxx – Engine >> 01 – On Board Diagnostic (OBD) capable systems >> 01 – Simos Fuel Injection and Ignition System TFSI >> Functions – engine >> 01 – Oil Consumption measurement (electronic measurement) 6. Contact Audi Technical Assistance Center (TAC) with all test results. Attach both the GFF logs to the TAC ticket prior to contacting a TAC consultant.
