Condition / Concern
Some customers may comment that the engine stops running and the vehicle shuts off after
an extended idle with the shifter in Park.
Recommendations / Instructions
This is normal operation and no repairs should be made. These vehicles are equipped with an Idle Time Out
feature that is standard on all push button start vehicles. There are multiple di erent scenarios for how long the
vehicle may idle. Below provides additional information on the idle times and disable information.
2015 Models Without RPO AVF will power o after 2.5 hours:
1. If the customer leaves the vehicle with the fob while the engine is running and the shifter in park it will power
o after 2.5 hours. (ie no fob present.)
2. If the customer is sitting with engine running and the fob is in the vehicle after 2.5 hours the vehicle will reach
out and look for the fob and if it locates it in the vehicle it will reset the timer an additional 2.5 hours (5 hours
total) then the vehicle will power o .
NOTE: If at any time during the rst two scenarios the vehicle shifter is removed from park, the timer will reset
and start over.
2015 Models With RPO AVF and 2016 Models will power o after 1 hour:
1. If the customer leaves the vehicle with the fob while the engine is running and the shifter in park it will power
o after 1 hour. (ie no fob present.)
2. If the customer is sitting with engine running and the fob is in the vehicle after 1 hour the vehicle will reach out
and look for the fob and if it locates it in the vehicle it will reset the timer an additional 1 hour (2 hours total) then
the vehicle will power o .
NOTE: If at any time during the rst two scenarios the vehicle shifter is removed from park, the timer will reset
and start over.
2017 and Newer Models:
This information can now be found in the Owner's Manual under: Driving and Operating / Starting and Operating
/ Extended Parking
See example SI Owner's Manual Document ID: 4328022 for 2017 Chevrolet Suburban.
Certain vehicles listed below the Idle Time Out feature can be disabled for a single
ignition cycle:
2021 and Newer Escalade / Tahoe / Suburban / Yukon Models
2022 Silverado 1500 / Sierra 1500 with RPO J22
2023 and Newer Silverado 1500 / Sierra 1500
2024 Silverado 2500HD / Sierra 3500HD:
NOTE: A dealer may comment on seeing a DIC Message stating "Automatic Shutdown Disabled" after an SPS
programming procedure. This message will clear itself after the vehicle is shut o and gone to sleep.
The Idle Time Out can be disabled by applying the brake and starting the engine, then continue to hold the
Engine Start/Stop button for at least 15 seconds after the engine starts. After 15 seconds release the Engine
Start/Stop button and a message on the DIC will appear stating Automatic Shutdown Disabled.
NOTE: This Idle Time Out Disable will only last for one ignition cycle and the next ignition cycle the idle time out
will be enabled.
WARNING: If the Idle Time Out feature is disabled the vehicle will continue to run and not automatically shut
down.
Certain vehicles listed below the Idle Time Out feature can be disabled:
For 2015 to 2022 Tahoe and Yukon only:
If a Police Department or Municipality is requesting this feature be disabled the dealer can reference the latest
