Condition
Some customers may comment on hearing an intermittent grinding or growling noise
from under the vehicle with engine running.
Cause
This condition may be caused by the engine starter (Bendix) hanging up and contacting
flywheel while engine is running.
- Technician may be able to duplicate noise and track it to the bell housing area of the
transmission. Noise will be intermittent and erratic.
Important: Do Not replace the transmission for this intermittent noise in the bell housing
area.
Correction
Technicians can diagnose noise by placing a stethoscope or other listening device on
starter motor when concern is happening.
- If the noise has been verified to be coming from the bellhousing area, replace the
starter.

GM bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, NOT a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform these
technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper
service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions, and know-how to do a job
properly and safely. If a condition is described, DO NOT assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your
vehicle will have that condition. See your GM dealer for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the
information.
