Eps light kept coming on and power steering was lost. This happened several times and was corrected by turning off the vehicle and restarting it. It occurred driving on interstates and during local driving for several days before taking it to a dealer. Vehicle was taken to camelback Hyundai, phoenix, az for evaluation. Write up from dealer summarized: eps light is on, code C1290 torque sensor main signal fault was discovered. Dtc found, eps C1290 torque sensor main signal fault. Search for tsb and found tsb 12 st 001, attempted eps reflash and found that it is not applicable to vehicle due to ecu for the mdps id different. Current rom id #4hdash02. Techline case # 2017051202870. Per diagram flow chart the torque sensor is inside the mdps/column. High resistance inside the torque sensor which is built in inside the mdps column. Replaced mdps column and performed calibration. Recheck for codes and no other dtc found? Dealer contacted Hyundai about replacing the steering column and it was approved. Not sure if the vin was included in the recall based on the dealer needing to call for approval.

I have a 2010 Elantra 4dsd 2.0 102,000 miles i have had no major issues with the car until about 3 months ago. Suddenly the eps light came on and i lost power steering. Upon pulling over and restarting the car the problem went away. I went about a week, and suddenly it did it again. Restarted car, went away, still does this intermittently. 2 days ago, eps light was one and was not able to remove the light using the method above. Also, my power steering wheel is so stiff. I took it to the dealer today, they found the following codes: eps - electronic power - C1290 - torque sensor main signal fault eps - electronic power - C1604ecu(brake system) hardware error they told me i would need a new steering column ($2500+). This seems a bit strange to me for an intermittent issue. Per google check @ http://www.Carproblemzoo.Com/Hyundai/Elantra/steering-problems.Php, this Elantra steering issue is a constant issue for many years. What can nhtsa do to help americans owning Hyundai cars having this problem?

Per pearson, this is a safety issue and vehicle shouldn't be driven until repaired. Need information on any and all recalls on this vehicle for this safety issue.

2009 HYUNDAI ELANTRA with 82140.0 miles

Had car in shop for power steering / eps light issue on 3/21/14 (81431 miles). They did an update #C1290 to recalibrate the esp and had to do a front wheel alignment too. The power steering went out again while i was on a busy road around 4pm. I took it back to the Hyundai dealership on 4/8/14 and they re-did the update #C1290. They told me that it is an electrical 'shortage' causing the problem and i would need to replace the entire steering column shaft assembly - costing $1600. I saved up the money and called to get the work done (5/8/14) and the price went up to $1920 now!!!! They told me they can put in a used steering column for $350 - but would only guarantee the work/part for 90 days. Meanwhile i am driving without power steering causing more injury to my arms and neck and very difficult to drive & dangerous in traffic. The sonata was recalled for the same issues....Why won't they recall the Elantra's also?

2008 HYUNDAI ELANTRA with 73150.0 miles

I was driving on a freeway when my eps light came on and when i began to exit my car did not want to steer. I took my foot off the gas and strongly steered right. At the stop sign i took both hands on the steering wheel and made a left turn. Every turn home was difficult. They power steering was not working. It was almost impossible to steer the car. I called the dealership and i started the car and it steered fine. I went to the dealer and they put it on the diag. Checck and they say it is C1290 steering torque sensor. At 74,000 miles you cant steer your car? You gotta be kidding me. They say it is not warranted but $2310.00 please will repair the problem. Its not a recall item like campaign 127 because its a different part. ?????

2008 HYUNDAI ELANTRA with 13064.0 miles

The power steering failed while driving my 2008 Hyundai Elantra at the speed limit on a 4 lane, non divided highway in rush hour traffic. I was driving my car to work in normal morning rush hour traffic. I was about 7 miles into a normal 10 mile commute. There was no warning. While moving at the speed limit, the steering wheel locked up. My initial thought was that the car had somehow stalled. I rapidly pumped the brakes to slow down and warn other cars. It is a manual transmission, so i depressed the clutch and pressed the accelerator. I heard the engine rev, so i realized it was power steering failure, not a stall. I continued to pumped the brakes and fought with the steering to maintain control. I am old enough to have driven cars that did not have power steering, but steering in this condition was more difficult than that. I slowed the car without incident and managed to pull it into a parking lot. I realized that the parking lot was connected to a side street and was only a block away from the dealer where i purchased the vehicle, so i drove the car onto their lot. The dashboard showed one red light, 'eps". Only after stepping out of the car did i realize how shaken up i was, it was probably poor judgment to drive even that one block. I left the car for them to service. From the service write-up: upon insp tech found steering angle sensor is defective. Code C1259, & C1290 present. Tech replaced sensor & cleared code. Oper to mfr spec. The dealership did this under warranty, no charge. They also performed 2 other recalls related to airbags while the car was there. I purchased this car new from this dealer and they are the only ones to ever service it. I have no reason to fault the dealer, i appreciate their work. For the car however, this is a dangerous situation. I had no prior warning of any type that the steering was defective or would fail. It failed while the vehicle was moving. This incident could have had very dire results.

This is a follow-up to odi number 10395729, power steering failure on a 2008 Hyundai Elantra. This second incident occurred three days and 26 miles driven after the initial repair by the dealership. In this case, i was idling in the left hand turning lane of a 6 lane divided highway, waiting in a line of cars for a left-turn green arrow. The steering wheel twitched, tried to rotate really, in my hands, then felt locked. I looked at the dashboard and the red eps light was on. I had researched Hyundai eps light problems on the internet since my first incident, and some posters recommended turning off the engine and restarting the car to activate the steering again. I tried this and the eps light did go out when the car restarted, and the feeling of steering wheel control returned. I was able to drive off the highway but got no more than 1/4 mile total before the steering locked again and the eps light was on again. I drifted to the curb and restarted the car again. The steering came back on again, and i proceeded about another 1/4 mile at slow speed before the steering locked again and the eps light reappeared. I restarted the car again and this time was able to drive the last block to my home and pulled to the curb. While idling there, the eps light came on and the steering wheel locked again. I called the dealer for assistance, and they returned my call and told me to call Hyundai roadside assistance for a tow. The dealership kept the car several days as they needed to order a part. The work order states '13090 sop part, replace steering column, part # 56310-2h300, shaft C1290 torque sensor abd'. In one month of driving since this repair, i have had no red eps lights, no steering failure. However, the steering wheel does continue to twitch on its own, sometimes while idling, sometimes while moving. I feel the dealership has treated me fairly, but i remain concerned about the long term consequences of this defect.
