P0342

Camshaft Position Sensor A Circuit Low Input (Bank 1)

DTC P0342, sometimes indicated as P034200 is an OBD diagnostic trouble code indicating a generic fault with the vehicle powertrain (i.e. engine and gearbox). This code identifies an error with the ignition system causing camshaft position sensor a circuit low input (bank 1).

The camshaft position sensor (CMP) is used to determine the position of the camshaft. This information is used by the engine control module (ECM) to control the fuel injection and ignition timing. The CMP is a Hall-effect sensor that produces an output voltage proportional to the camshaft position.
The CMP is located in the valley of the camshaft. The sensor is a permanent magnet with two Hall-effect sensors. The sensor has a slotted disk that passes by the sensor. The slots interrupt the magnetic field, which causes the Hall-effect sensors to produce an output voltage.
The CMP is used to determine the position of the camshaft for both the intake and exhaust valves. The CMP is used to determine the position of the exhaust valves for the duration of the exhaust event.
The CMP is used to determine the position of the intake valves for the duration of the intake event.
The CMP is used to determine the position of the camshaft for the entire engine cycle.

2001 NEWMAR MOUNTAIN AIRE with 24116.0 miles

Vehicle running normally, accelerated to merge with traffic, engine began to miss then backfired. Miss continued and the vehicle wouldn't accelerate past 55 mph. Pulled to side of the road to check for any visual problems, none noted. Engine started normally and i finished the 30 mile drive home. Changed fuel filter, air filter and maf sensor. Engine started normally and i took it for a test drive. After 20 miles with no issues i attempted an acceleration and again it lost power, skipping/missing and backfired. Pulled into a rest area and shut down for 20 minutes. On restart a check engine light illuminated. Obdii indicated that it was a P0342 crankshaft position indicator sensor issue. A mechanic indicated that gm did a recall on the 2001 8.1l vortec for this issue and that this should have extended to the workhorse w22 chassis with the same engine but didn't. I believe the recall should have extended to all 2001 8.1l engines. This is a serious safety hazard as it leads to an unsafe situation where the vehicle fails to accelerate or stalls when merging or passing. Additionally, the shutdown of the engine removes the power brakes and power steering creating an increased hazard to the occupants and those around the vehicle.

2000 DAEWOO PUERTO RICO LANOS with 78700.0 miles

Dt: the contact received a recall notice on the camshaft position sensor in september 2004. Had not had any problems with the car. He did not have the recall repair work done. Now ,the engine check light came on. The dealership to whom he took the car to in october 2005, stated that the parts do not match the ones that were subject to the recall of last year. The manufacturer was called, and they said that they were not going to fix the recall. *ak updated 11/16/2005 - when the diagnostic were ran on the vehicle the dtc came up P0342 for the camshaft position sensor. The consumer explained that this code was the same as the one on the recall notice. *nm
