P0490

Exhaust Gas Recirculation "A" Control Circuit High

DTC P0490, sometimes indicated as P049000 is an OBD diagnostic trouble code indicating a generic fault with the vehicle powertrain (i.e. engine and gearbox). This code identifies an error with the auxiliary emissions system causing exhaust gas recirculation "a" control circuit high.

The exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system helps to reduce emissions by recirculating a portion of the exhaust gas back into the engine. The EGR "A" control circuit high fault code indicates a problem with the EGR system.
There are several possible causes of this fault code, including a defective EGR valve, a defective EGR solenoid, a clogged EGR valve or exhaust pipe, or a defective ECM.
If you have access to a scan tool, check the ECM for any fault codes that may be causing the EGR system to malfunction. If no fault codes are present, the problem may be with the EGR valve or solenoid.
If the EGR valve or solenoid is defective, replace them as necessary.
If the EGR valve or exhaust pipe is clogged, clean them as necessary.
If the ECM is defective, replace it as necessary.
