Known Recall Investigations
  • Steering wheel heater overheats investigation # PE03019

    This pe was opened based on four odi complaints that the steering wheel overheats. Vw has shown that moisture and prespiration permeate the steering wheel cover causing the heating element to corrode.This corrosion may cause a small, localized area of the steering wheel to experience a brief duration of overheating.There are no reports of the steering wheel sustaining combustion. The investigation has found no occurrences of severe burning and no consumers required medical attention. A safety-related defect has not been identified at this time and further use of agency resources does not appear to be warranted.Accordingly this investigation is closed.The closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by nhtsa that no safety-related defect exists.The agency reserves the right to take further action if warranted by the circumstances.

Timing belt failure at 149,865 km (90,000 mi.) timing belt replacement, resurface cylinder head, replace guides and valves. Also replaced water pump and thermostat. Total cost $4,951.87 cdn dealership (southgate volkswagen audi inc. In edmonton alberta canada) was no help, and wanted to replace the engine at a cost of more than $10,000. Repairs done at local repair shop (auto imports edmonton alberta canada) - they were excellent. Wrote to audi to try to claim as a manufacturer's defect - 12 similar reports on nhtsa web site at similar mileage.

While driving brakes locked up, damaging vehicle, consumer spoke with dealer and they refused to honor recall letter.*ak as consumer tapped on the brakes, they locked up causing the vehicle to spin out of control, this has happened on 3 ocassions, when consumer arrived to the dealer he was informed that the recall part was given to another customer.*slc
