The firmware does not compensate sufficiently the temperature gradients and the magnetic field strength of the sensor electronic. If the crankshaft sensor cannot process the signal values from the transmitter the digital diesel electronic (dde) will notice that and change to the emergency operation mode. The emergency mode will be displayed by the check control message ?Engine malfunction?. The driver may notice a rough running engine and a reduced driving power (70%). However an engine stalling during driving conditions cannot be excluded. on the affected vehicles the crankshaft sensor will be replaced with a new version.

Recall 2020066 [Canada]: Lights and instruments
Issue: on certain m6 gran coupe models, the center high-mounted stop lamp (third brake light) may not be properly attached. Over time, the lamp could loosen and separate from the vehicle. Safety risk: a stop lamp that detaches from the vehicle could create a road hazard for others and increase the risk of a crash. Additionally, it would reduce vehicle visibility for following road users. Corrective actions: bmw will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to inspect and secure the high-mounted stop lamp. If the stop lamp has detached from the vehicle and is damaged, it will be replaced.
Recall 2019480 [Canada]: Visual system
Issue: on certain vehicles, the rearview camera does not return to the default settings when it turns on. This could make the rearview image difficult to see if a driver had previously adjusted the camera display brightness at or near the lowest setting, and contrast at or near the highest setting. Canadian regulations require that the rearview display returns to the default view each time the camera is turned on. Safety risk: reduced rear visibility could increase the risk of a crash. Corrective actions: the company will notify owners by mail and instruct them to take their vehicle to a dealer to update the software for the rearview camera. Drivers are recommended not to adjust the display brightness at or near the lowest setting, and contrast at or near the highest setting, until this recall is completed.
Recall 2018497 [Canada]: Engine
On certain vehicles, a crankshaft sensor error may cause the engine to stall. This would result in a loss of motive power, which could increase the risk of a crash causing injury and/or damage to property. Correction: dealers will replace the crankshaft sensor. Note: this condition would result in the illumination of the check engine warning lamp and an “engine malfunction” message appearing in the instrument cluster. Note: this is an expansion of recall 2018-373.
