Known Recall Investigations
  • Fuel leak - motorycle investigation # EA13006

Odi began investigating this issue after owners of model year (my) 2004-2011 r-series bmw motorcycles reported incidents of pressurized fuel leakage from the fuel pump flange. Some owners first became aware of the problem when their pant leg was fuel-soaked.Prior to opening our initial investigation on november 16, 2012, bmw had concluded that the small number of warranty claims and owner reports did not indicate the existence of a safety defect trend. However, during the course of responding to our information requests, bmw re-examined its data and decided to conduct a recall (13v-617) of the subject motorcycles. In conducting recall 13v-617, bmw voluntarily expanded the scope of affected vehicles from odisoriginal scope, my2005-2008 r-series motorcycles, to include the primary and auxiliary fuel pumps on all my 2005-2011 r-series, my 2005-2011 k12&13 models, my 2010-2011 rr models, and the my 2012 k1600 motorcycles. The total number of motorcycles subject to this recalled is 50,184.The 55 reports cited in this investigation can be viewed at: http://www-odi.Nhtsa.Dot.Gov/owners/searchnhtsaid under the following complaint identification numbers:10485789,10449393,10521322,10475150,10435325,10493015,10471642, 10448216,10488899,10356156,10433733,10442023,10492342,10435968, 10492961,10504324,10485882,10433013,10453738,10474390,10417320, 10485276,10444876,10508150,10485807,10492118,10491835,10425962, 10430734,10488652,10485274,10493320,10522421,10399423,10443840, 10448325,10490417,10485452,10433589,10467136,10420291,10503806, 10532145,10523763,10523626,10425514,10354202,10437222,10444742, 10454834,10532172,10487624,10435984,10452476, 10485337

Fuel strip failure for second time after bmw extended warranty to 12 years after original date of purchase. This is a safety issue because the low fuel light remains on constantly. Could cause a crash if the motorcycle were to run out of fuel.

I have a 2007 k1200gt motorcycle, an early production model, that has developed a problem with the engine speed control - the engine expectedly revs up and down (hunts). I did an internet search and found bmw north america service bulletin 13 003 07 (058), which describes the exact problem with the bike. The service bulletin was intended for these early production bikes. However, the issue only surfaced relatively recent on my bike, which is now out of warranty even though there was only 12,000 miles on the bike at the time. I took the bike into the san francisco bmw dealer and they refused to cover the recommended repairs. Then contacted bmw north america and they have also refused to fix the issue. The issue is particularly hazardous, as the bike will cut out unexpectedly and/or accelerate despite closing the throttle, as is necessary when approaching a corner. As a senior product safety engineer with over 20 years experience, i find this a significant safety issue, and am shocked that bmw na have not voluntarily addressed this on all early production units.

For the second time the ening shut off completely under accelaration. The electronics and engine went totally dead. Had to pull over to restart. The bike was being shifted from 1st gear into second when it died.

Brake light came on after only 8000 miles. Motorcycle is adult driven, lightly used, regularly maintained and garaged. Bmw can do better than this.

Tl* the contact owns a 2007 bmw k1200 gt. The contact stated that while driving approximately 30 mph attempting to engage the brakes in order to avoid a crash, the brake warning light illuminated and the abs pump failed and the wheels locked. The vehicle was not taken to a dealer. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 35,000. Upon starting the motorcycle the "normal" checklist was replaced with "brake failure". Dealer tested the abs unit and indeed it failed. Used this motorcycle in a very limited capacity due to limited braking. Dealer stated the unit was not covered under warranty or recall. In researching this problem i have found it is a common issue with this unit. Replaced the abs unit thru dealer 4/15. I feel this should be addressed thru this agency as it is definitely a manufacturing/programming problem that then becomes a safety issue. *tr

Abs failed. On freeway. No warning. Less then 36k miles. This turns out is common problem with bmw. Tl* the contact owns a 2007 bmw k1200 gt motorcycle. The contact stated that while having routine maintenance performed, he was alerted that the abs module would need to be replaced. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure and current mileage was 18,176.

Fuel pump mounting boss for fuel line connection cracked. Fuel sprays onto back of engine and flows on to the exhaust system, i saw smoke coming from under bike when stopped at end of driveway. Saw fuel running down the side of the engine on to the exhaust. The motorcycle was not fully warm, it had been running only 1-2 minutes. Based on the flow of leaking fuel, the motorcycle would have caught fire when the engine and exhaust reached normally operating temperature. This failure has been documented at k-bikes.Com and i-bmw.Com and on this complaint site. *tr
