Known Recall Investigations
  • Fuel leak - motorycle investigation # EA13006

Odi began investigating this issue after owners of model year (my) 2004-2011 r-series bmw motorcycles reported incidents of pressurized fuel leakage from the fuel pump flange. Some owners first became aware of the problem when their pant leg was fuel-soaked.Prior to opening our initial investigation on november 16, 2012, bmw had concluded that the small number of warranty claims and owner reports did not indicate the existence of a safety defect trend. However, during the course of responding to our information requests, bmw re-examined its data and decided to conduct a recall (13v-617) of the subject motorcycles. In conducting recall 13v-617, bmw voluntarily expanded the scope of affected vehicles from odisoriginal scope, my2005-2008 r-series motorcycles, to include the primary and auxiliary fuel pumps on all my 2005-2011 r-series, my 2005-2011 k12&13 models, my 2010-2011 rr models, and the my 2012 k1600 motorcycles. The total number of motorcycles subject to this recalled is 50,184.The 55 reports cited in this investigation can be viewed at: http://www-odi.Nhtsa.Dot.Gov/owners/searchnhtsaid under the following complaint identification numbers:10485789,10449393,10521322,10475150,10435325,10493015,10471642, 10448216,10488899,10356156,10433733,10442023,10492342,10435968, 10492961,10504324,10485882,10433013,10453738,10474390,10417320, 10485276,10444876,10508150,10485807,10492118,10491835,10425962, 10430734,10488652,10485274,10493320,10522421,10399423,10443840, 10448325,10490417,10485452,10433589,10467136,10420291,10503806, 10532145,10523763,10523626,10425514,10354202,10437222,10444742, 10454834,10532172,10487624,10435984,10452476, 10485337

I have had the fuel level sensor replaced 4 times in the past three years and under 2,000 miles. The last one was replaced 4/2/18 with 37,200 miles and it failed after 41-miles. Bmw refuses to honor their 2-year parts warranty and replace the last one replaced 4/2/18. This is a safety issue as my fuel gauge does not work and running out of gas on the highway or when crossing an intersection could easily result in a fatal accident. Bmw extended their coverage on this known defective part for 12-years and my coverage ran out in august 2018

I have experienced a recurring problem with high engine idle speed, unresponsive decelaeration when the throttle is closed and rough or "bucking" at constant cruising speeds of approximately 60 mph. I have learned from multiple independent forums that this is a common problem among owners of this model. Repair attempts, at owners expense, have produced inconsistent satisfactory results. Operation of the motorcycle is unsafe. Bmw should be forced to develop a solution and a subsequesnt recall issued to repair the problem at company expense. *tr

This k1200gt, 2006 model year, has been stalling at speeds >50mph. Many times, the stalls occur at highway speeds 70-80mph with sudden, unexpected deceleration, and loss of brakes (they are power assisted by the motor). Many occurrences have resulted in near misses in regards to accidents. Initial findings be a repairing dealer indicated that it was incompatible fuel type (ie fuels containing ethanol, water in fuel, etc) but the problem continues after switching fuel grades and stations. Problem seems to exist or appears more rampantly when ambient temperature is above 60. *tr ..Updated 11/14/12 *bf updated 12/4/2012 *js

Tl*the contact owns a 2006 bmw k1200 gt. While riding approximately 20 mph, the vehicle remained at a constant speed instead of decelerating when the throttle was released. The contact stated that when the throttle was held at a constant speed, the engine often surged. The dealer was aware of the failure, but had not inspected the vehicle. The vin was unknown. The current mileage was 7,400 and failure mileage was 5,600. Updated 09/26/07 *tr

Idle is erratic. Bikes idle jumps randomly and hangs up at a high rpm at idle or when shifting between gears. Bike has been in for repair five times now. Dealer has replaced the airbox and updated software to no avail. Bike is unsafe to ride in this condition. Problem is more pronounced at higher ambient temps. *jb

My venicle sporadically exibits an idle speed which is abnormally high, and makes low speed, traffic diriving dangerous. The manufacturer has changed components and computer software to fix the problem to no avail. My motorcycle remains unsafe and not running properly

Engine will not idle properly, it should idle at 1,000 rpm. At least part of every ride it will go up to 1,500 to 2,000 rpm.

Brake warning light constantly illuminated. Bmw dealer cannot turn it off or reset it. Internet chat rooms reveal this is a very common problem with the late model bmw motorcycle line. *tr

(1) events leading up to the failure: bmw motorcycle 06 k1200gt. Driving motorcycle at highway speeds. Engine fully warmed up. (2) failure and its consequences: shutting off throttle to down shift engine would not idle down, engine idle stuck at 3000 rpm for five to ten seconds. When idle did slow down it would idle erratic and not smooth just touching the throttle would cause the engine to rev to 3000 rpm's. Very difficult to drive at surface street speeds, 40 mph or slower. Problem would go away if engine is turned off for a minute or two! This has happened to me five times since dec. 26 2006. (3) what was done to correct the failure; i.E, parts repaired or replaced: complained to dealer at 12,000 mile inspection. "job: check idle, customer says he has had 4 instances of erratic idle". Dealer checked idle and for codes, nothing done. I also checked with two other dealers to see if they had any reports of high idle problems. They claim they didn't and both said they contacted bmw na.
