• Recall 142577 [USA]: A fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source can increase the risk of a fire.
  Bmw of north america, llc (bmw) is recalling certain 2009-2011 k1300 (s, gt), 2010-2011 s1000 rr, 2005-2011 r1200 (gs, gs adventure, r, rt, s, st), 2006-2010 hp2 (enduro, megamoto, sport), 2005-2008 k1200 (r, r sport, s, gt), and 2012 k1600 (gt, gtl) motorcycles that were repaired under recall 13v-617 with the support ring remedy and where the fuel pump was not replaced at a later date. This recall involves the fuel pump, and also the auxiliary fuel pump as applicable. The affected motorcycles have a fuel pump flange that may crack, possibly resulting in a fuel leak while the engine is running.

• Recall 114912 [USA]: If the rear wheel mounting flange cracks, the mounting bolts may loosen and the rear wheel may not remain secured to the motorcycle, causing a loss of stability and increasing the risk of a crash.

• Recall 101435 [USA]: A fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source may result in a fire.

• Recall 72336 [USA]: Air in the brake system can lead to a loss of braking capability, increasing the risk of a crash.
  On certain motorcycles, during long periods of riding at sustained high engine rpm, vibration within the brake fluid reservoir can cause the brake fluid to foam. This could allow air to enter the front brake system which could lead to a loss of front braking efficiency.

• Recall 33026 [USA]: It is possible that a pressure build up in the oil tank could cause it to rupture, allowing oil to leak onto the rear tire. an oil leak could cause a fire. oil on the rear tire could cause loss of control.
  On certain motorcycles, frequent short trips particularly during cold temperatures, can cause water to accumulate in the oil tank, and when the engine is running, escaping water vapor can condense on the oil tank air bleed valve. In freezing temperatures, this water could freeze and block the air bleed valve.

• Recall 38612 [USA]: Temporary loss of abs braking could increase the risk of a crash.
  On certain motorcycles, under rapid, repeated, and unusually harsh braking, loss of abs capability could temporarily occur.
  dealers will add a physical restriction, in the form of a banjo bolt with a flow restrictor to the brake line, and on certain models dealers will install new front brake discs of a slightly larger thickness free of charge.   Issue: on certain motorcycles, the fuel pump flange could crack. If this happens, fuel could leak while the engine is running. Note: this recall only affects motorcycles that did not have the fuel pump replaced under transport canada recall 2013-442. Safety risk: a fuel leak can create the risk of a fire. Corrective actions: bmw will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your motorcycle to a dealer to replace the fuel pump and auxiliary fuel pump (if equipped) with an improved version.

  Certain motorcycles with dealer installed accessory turn signals may not comply with the requirements of canada motor vehicle safety standard (cvmss) 108 - lighting system and retroreflective devices. The size of the lens on the accessory turn signals may be too small, and therefore would not meet the requirements of the standard. This could reduce vehicle conspicuity to following and approaching road users, and increase the risk of a crash causing injury and/or property damage. Correction: dealers will replace the accessory turn signals with factory indicators that meet the requirements of the standard.

  On certain motorcycles, the threaded holes on the rear wheel flange could crack if the wheel bolts are tightened beyond the specified torque limit during servicing. Over time, this could allow the bolts to back out of their threaded holes, causing the rear wheel to become loose. This could result in a loss of stability of the motorcycle, and increase the risk of a crash causing injury and/or property damage. Correction: dealers will replace the aluminum rear wheel flange with a steel flange.

  On certain motorcycles, cracks could develop in the fuel pump and/or auxiliary fuel pump flange (if equipped). This would result in fuel leaking when the engine is turned on and the fuel system is pressurized. Leaking fuel, in the presence of an ignition source, could lead to a fire causing injury and/or damage to property. Correction: dealers will inspect the fuel pump flange(s) and install a reinforcing ring or replace the fuel pump(s), as necessary.

  On certain motorcycles, vibration, particularly on a long ride at constant high engine rpm and on engine overrun at high rpm, can, under certain circumstances, cause foaming of the brake fluid in the reservoir of the front brakes. This foaming may cause air to enter into the brake system, which can severely diminish the braking efficiency of the front brakes. Extended stopping distance may result in a vehicle crash causing property damage and/or personal injury. Correction: dealers will install a screen insert into the front brake fluid reservoir.

• Recall 2010395 [Canada]: Suspension
  On certain motorcycles, due to environmental conditions, the bearings of the link lever attached to the rear strut could be subject to corrosion. This could lead to reduced movement of the link lever. Over time, if the corrosion became significant, restriction of movement of the link lever could occur. This could affect handling of the motorcycle. In an extreme case, this could result in the connecting rod breaking by a bending force, causing the rear wheel to decelerate by contact with the inner fender. This could lead to a crash depending on traffic, road conditions and rider's reactions. Correction: dealers will replace the rear suspension relay lever.

• Recall 2007019 [Canada]: Engine
  On certain motorcycles, frequent short-trip usage, particularly at low ambient temperatures, causes condensation, increasing the proportion of water in the engine oil. The water vapour produced while the engine is running condenses at the outlet port of the dry-sump oil tank breather. If temperatures are below 0 degrees celsius, the condensation can freeze and plug the breather line of the oil tank. As a result, oil tank over-pressurization can cause the tank to rupture, allowing oil to escape onto the rear wheel and create the risk of a crash causing injuries or death. Correction: dealers will install an updated oil cap with a pressure relief valve.

  Certain motorcycles may exhibit a temporary loss of abs function as a result of an "overpressure" effect in the brake system caused by applying significant force to the brake lever under rapid, repeated and unusually harsh braking. Loss of abs function can increase the risk of a crash in certain traffic and road conditions. Correction: dealers will install a banjo bolt with a flow restrictor to the front brake line.

• Fuel leak - motorycle investigation # EA13006

Fuel strip inside fuel tank that sends fuel level indications failed. This is the 4th strip in 3 years. This problem is present in several bmw motorcycles built from 2005 to present. *tr

When i was stopped at an intersection i noticed a very strong fuel smell coming from my motorcycle. I looked for liquid fuel leaking to the ground but found none. I was very near home, so i returned and removed the body panels to examine the fuel system. I found fuel leaking from the fuel tank/pump cap down onto the top of the engine and alternator. I removed the tank and examined the fuel pump assembly and found multiple cracks radiating outward from the pump outlet connector. The plastic used for the fuel pump cap does not appear to be holding up over time and has caused a fuel leak that could cause a fire when it comes in contact with the alternator. This is the second fuel leak i have had on this motorcycle due to poor quality plastic components. *tr

There are several cracks on the flange where fuel line has a connection. These cracks are causing fuel to leak onto the motor and alternator creating a fire hazard. Fuel also pools in areas with sensitive electronics where fuel wasn't meant to be stored. I have no doubt that this would eventually lead to a fire that most likely would lead to severe bodily harm or death! It appears bmw is aware of this problem also as they have updated this part as well but haven't issued a recall yet even though its under investigation. All evidence shows that bmw is aware of these inherent design flaws in this model motorcycle but refuses to issue a recall putting the public as risk. I believe the nhtsa needs to take action and force bmw to recall and replace with the updated fuel pump assembly, including the fuel pump controller and fuel pump controller gasket. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 bmw k1200r. The contact stated while driving approximately 20 mph, the vehicle shifted out of second gear and lunged forward. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the failure occurred because the transmission needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The vehicle was repaired. The approximate failure and current mileage was 56,000. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 bmw k1200 r motorcycle. The contact stated that while driving 35 mph, the vehicle shifted out of gear and vibrated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who stated the transmission had failed. The transmission was replaced. The failure was reported to the manufacturer. The failure mileage was 5,600. After finishing a ride, had strong smell of gasoline coming from under instrument unit. Dealer today found cracked fuel pump unit causing bike to leak gas right above engine. *tr

I rode bike to work and parked it on side stand. After work i noted a wet spot under bike but could not determine if it was oil or gas. On the ride home i noted a petroleum smell when at stop lights. I parked the bike in the garage on its side stand and gasoline started leaking from the left side of the bike. I called the dealer and rode it over. Upon parking the bike gas began to leak again. The dealer checked the bike confirming a gas leak originating in the area of the fuel injector/delivery system. Parts have been ordered and it is scheduled for repair. *tr

I noticed petroleum smell when at a stop light when riding the bike home from work. When i parked the bike on the side stand in the garage fuel began to leak down the left side of the motorcycle. I immediately called my bmw mechanic who informed me to ride the bike over to the shop for inspection. When the bike was parked at the shop the mechanic observed the fuel leaking from the left side of the bike. They kept the bike and early next week i received a call that the fuel pump was leaking gasoline. The replacement price was 460 plus labor. I feel that bmw should be responsible for replacement of the defective part as this was a dangerous and potentially fatal occurrence as gasoline was leaking on a hot engine with the possibility of a fire or explosion being very real. I also understand that this has happened to several bmw r1200 bikes manufactured at the same time. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 bmw k1200 r motorcycle. The contact stated that the anti lock braking system engaged when the brakes were applied. The brakes then released momentarily while the vehicle jerked forward before the manual brakes finally engaged. The failure recurred intermittently at various speeds. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer and the contact was advised to drain all braking fluid from the manual brakes and the anti lock brakes. The vehicle was repaired, but the failure continued. The contact was then informed that the servo unit needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified and offered no assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 28,000. Updated 8/31/12 *cn the consumer stated he was in an accident due the brake failure on august 21st. The consumer was pulling up to a stop sign driving about 10-15 mph, when the vehicle's brakes on both tires locked. The vehicle dropped on the right side. Updated 09/11/2012 *js
