Known Recall Investigations
  • Fuel leak - motorycle investigation # EA13006

Odi began investigating this issue after owners of model year (my) 2004-2011 r-series bmw motorcycles reported incidents of pressurized fuel leakage from the fuel pump flange. Some owners first became aware of the problem when their pant leg was fuel-soaked.Prior to opening our initial investigation on november 16, 2012, bmw had concluded that the small number of warranty claims and owner reports did not indicate the existence of a safety defect trend. However, during the course of responding to our information requests, bmw re-examined its data and decided to conduct a recall (13v-617) of the subject motorcycles. In conducting recall 13v-617, bmw voluntarily expanded the scope of affected vehicles from odisoriginal scope, my2005-2008 r-series motorcycles, to include the primary and auxiliary fuel pumps on all my 2005-2011 r-series, my 2005-2011 k12&13 models, my 2010-2011 rr models, and the my 2012 k1600 motorcycles. The total number of motorcycles subject to this recalled is 50,184.The 55 reports cited in this investigation can be viewed at: http://www-odi.Nhtsa.Dot.Gov/owners/searchnhtsaid under the following complaint identification numbers:10485789,10449393,10521322,10475150,10435325,10493015,10471642, 10448216,10488899,10356156,10433733,10442023,10492342,10435968, 10492961,10504324,10485882,10433013,10453738,10474390,10417320, 10485276,10444876,10508150,10485807,10492118,10491835,10425962, 10430734,10488652,10485274,10493320,10522421,10399423,10443840, 10448325,10490417,10485452,10433589,10467136,10420291,10503806, 10532145,10523763,10523626,10425514,10354202,10437222,10444742, 10454834,10532172,10487624,10435984,10452476, 10485337

Engine stalls and / or loses power in hot weather. I have had numerous stalling episodes with this bike. It will stall after being in steady cruise for 30 minutes at 4000 rpm. It also stalls repeatedly in very hot weather (95-100 degrees) and will not restart(sitting stationary at a traffic light when trying to start off after light changes). If it does restart in these conditions, it doesn't respond to throttle opening and will only rev to 2000-3000 rpm and will bog down if throttle is opened further. I have had instances where the engine won't stay running after start( engine starts and runs for approximately 10-15 seconds and then dies).

Stalls when clutch is engaged and engine should come to idle. The typical situation is when preparing to stop for an intersection or other road condition that would call for the engine to be temporarily disengaged from the transmission. This happens on every ride. The dealer service department opined "they all do that".

Tl* the contact owns a 2009 bmw k 1300 gt motorcycle. While driving approximately 40 mph, the contact attempted to shift from the second to third gear, but the gear shift fractured. The contact pulled over and subsequently towed the motorcycle to a local dealer. The technician stated that the failure was unusual and was unable to diagnosed the cause of the failure. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 27,700.

Engine stops intermittently while driving stop and go in city traffic under 10 to 15 miles per hour. The problem started in 2010. Bmw has not been able to correct the problem after 4 attempts. The engine still stops. I keep complaining to bmw. Told to get lost.

Engine cut out un-expectedly multiple times (5) during a 200 mile trip. First time this has happened in 18k miles, but very scary, of course it happens at the most inopportune time, in traffic. At idle, it quits, or, worse, cuts off when downshifting. Multiple posts to the moa confirm that this issue is common if not predictable sooner or later. Very concerned for safety of myself and my passenger(s)btw, moa is the official bmw motorcycle owners association of which i am a member. Thanks *tr

For a few weeks prior to the incident, i could smell fuel when i parked the bike. There were no visible leaks. I planned to take it to the dealership to be looked at, whenever the next opportunity presented itself. On tuesday april 29, 2014, i rode 17 miles to work. The bike ran well and there was no evidence of trouble. It rained while i was working and 10 hours later when i came out of my work place the bike was wet. I toweled the seat dry and set off for home. The rear tire lost traction at low acceleration but i dismissed it to cold tires and wet pavement. The tires were new continental contamination m that had been installed about two weeks prior. On the first 1/8 of a mile to the first stop light i felt what i thought was water on my right leg. Because it has rained, i dismissed it as water from the faring of the bike. But as i turned onto the main street the road turned dry but my right leg and sneaker was getting soaked. I could smell gasoline and see that the liquid was oily. At about 1.8 miles from work i pulled over and saw that there was gasoline soaking the engine, my leg, the exhaust, and the ground. Vaporized fuel was steaming from the surface of the exhaust. I immediately shut the bike off and within a few minutes the gasoline evaporated and was gone. The leak stopped as soon as i turned the ignition off. I parked the bike and called for road side assistance. Luckily there was no fire. *tr updated 10/23/2014 *js

Tl* the contact owns a 2009 bwm k1300 gt motorcycle. The contacted stated that while driving at an unknown speed, he approached an intersection and engaged the clutch. The vehicle then stalled without warning. The contact attempted numerous times to restart the vehicle but to no avail. The vehicle was towed to an authorized dealer where the ignition coil was replaced at the contact's expense. A short period of time after the repair, the vehicle failed to start again. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer where the right combination switch and starter relay was replaced at the contact's expense. The left combination switch was also replaced because the horn and high beam headlights were not operational. The stalling failure recurred and the vehicle continued to fail to start. The dealer then recommended that the contact replace the entire vehicle but the contact declined and requested the dealer to repair the failure. The dealer then stated that the rear final drive needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not further repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 30,000.

After having the recall , shown below , completed back in 2009 this safety problem reoccurred on this motorcycle , in my view all bmw did was replace the defective part with another defective part. All the same problems have reoccured with the three years of ownership ( driven less then 5k) almost causing a crash 4 times since the install of the "new" defective parts , both switch cluster have had failures from control loss to no starting and stalling. Bmw has refused to replace the defective switches unless i pay for the replacement stating that have been replaced before under the recall. This is a serious problem that can cause death when the switch fails causing the bike to stall or loss of control. The same defective switches are also now being replaced under warranty on the newer version of this motorcycle (k1600xx) , bmw still have not supplied working switch clusters that work.
