Known Recall Investigations
  • Fuel leak - motorycle investigation # EA13006

Odi began investigating this issue after owners of model year (my) 2004-2011 r-series bmw motorcycles reported incidents of pressurized fuel leakage from the fuel pump flange. Some owners first became aware of the problem when their pant leg was fuel-soaked.Prior to opening our initial investigation on november 16, 2012, bmw had concluded that the small number of warranty claims and owner reports did not indicate the existence of a safety defect trend. However, during the course of responding to our information requests, bmw re-examined its data and decided to conduct a recall (13v-617) of the subject motorcycles. In conducting recall 13v-617, bmw voluntarily expanded the scope of affected vehicles from odisoriginal scope, my2005-2008 r-series motorcycles, to include the primary and auxiliary fuel pumps on all my 2005-2011 r-series, my 2005-2011 k12&13 models, my 2010-2011 rr models, and the my 2012 k1600 motorcycles. The total number of motorcycles subject to this recalled is 50,184.The 55 reports cited in this investigation can be viewed at: http://www-odi.Nhtsa.Dot.Gov/owners/searchnhtsaid under the following complaint identification numbers:10485789,10449393,10521322,10475150,10435325,10493015,10471642, 10448216,10488899,10356156,10433733,10442023,10492342,10435968, 10492961,10504324,10485882,10433013,10453738,10474390,10417320, 10485276,10444876,10508150,10485807,10492118,10491835,10425962, 10430734,10488652,10485274,10493320,10522421,10399423,10443840, 10448325,10490417,10485452,10433589,10467136,10420291,10503806, 10532145,10523763,10523626,10425514,10354202,10437222,10444742, 10454834,10532172,10487624,10435984,10452476, 10485337

  • Motorcycle stalling investigation # PE09052

The subject motorcycles may stall due to restricted airflow within the air intake system during low rpm engine operation, typically while shifting and/or decelerating.Bmw is recalling the subject motorcycles (09v-471) to update the engine managment software.Additionally, bmw will include model year 2010 k300s/gt models. With that recall, submitted in lieu of responding to our information request, this pe is closed.

This motorcycle was included in the previous nhtsa recall campaign number: 13v617000, for a fuel pump flange failure which would result in a fuel leak and potential fire, and worse. Since the recall, we've had 2 separate situations of fuel leakage while in motion. The first was november 18, 2017, traveling at speed along a straight highway, raw gasoline was smelled by the passenger. Fuel was dripping steadily over the lower engine components. The bike was not safe to return to the road, trucked back home. We were informed the recall had already been satisfied, all risks were ours to assume. We replaced the plastic fuel pump male quick disconnect fitting with a metal unit, as the male unit showed a crack. The second failure was july 16, 2019. Vehicle was in motion, freeway traffic congestion and associated speed for evening commute, straight routes of travel. The smell of gasoline was again detected and raw gas was again observed dripping from the connectors, leaking from between the collar and the female connector. The cracks the recall collar was to address and keep from continuing, appear to have actually continued to develop and increase, leading to potentially life-threatening circumstances. The male and female quick disconnect fittings can be replaced with metal, but these replacements must be threaded into an already compromised setting. The previous recall collar is a failure. This should have been correctly fixed by a redesigned fuel pump replacement using metal quick disconnects, instead of applying what amounts to a band-aid solution. We do not know how much damage or fracturing is continue to occur under the flange 'fix'. But this continued failure is putting the rider at risk for vehicle fire, injury, or even death.

On august 29, 2013 my continental contisport attack front tire popped while i was riding my 2009 bmw k1300s motorcycle north of dahlonega, ga. I was lucky and did not crash. I was riding at about 40 mph when the tire popped. The center of the tread separated causing the rapid deflation. I had the bike towed on a flat bed to european motorsports inc. And bought a new pirelli rosso 2 tire for $168.33. The flat bed tow cost me $110. The tire was a conti sport attack size 120/70zr17 motorcycle tire. I found out on april 21, 2016 that continental has a recall on this tire for rapid deflation because of tread separation - the recall notice from conti is psib 14-06 dated november 6, 2014. I called continental and talked to janet decandia at 973-471-8890 email = [email protected]. Janet told me i had no recourse because i did not have the tire carcass or the dot serial number. I found the dot serial number from an old picture and on may 19, 2016 i sent her via email all required information proving bike year, model, vin # and proof of current ownership. On may 20, 2016 janet sent me an email telling me "i went thru all your docs as well as checking the bmw website for the oe fitment on your bike, and also the list of vin's we received from bmw that were effected by the recall. Your bike did not have a recalled tire on it. The oe fitment on your bike was our 120/70zr17 sport attack "c", whereas the recalled tire did not have the "c" designation. Also, there were no model year 2009 1300s bikes on the vin list bmw provided to us.". If the sport attack "c" tire that popped was not a part of the conti recall, it should be added to the recall immediately. It is a safety hazard and someone is going to be seriously injured or killed because of that tire's faulty design or manufacture.

I was decelerating and downshifted to 1st gear at 4 mph, i pulled the clutch in and coasted to a stop then the engine stalled. I tried to start button, but there was no catching. I pressed the start button and accelerated the rpm's to 4000 then the bike took off abruptly. One thousand feet later, i was coming to a stop at 5 mph and the engine turned off again. A half mile later i was in first gear into a corner at 5 mph then the engine died. There was no starting with the start button, so i popped the clutch and the engine started and i accelerated. As long as i kept the rpm's high there was no stalling, but if i can to a stop, the engine would die. I was almost rear ended five times today!!!! I almost wrecked in the curve when the engine died. *tr

The bike stalls when you slow down and go to shift into a lower gear. It has done it numerous times and is very dangerous on a motorcycle. This bike was re-sold by bmw after they supposedly fixed the exact same issue. Bmw's fix didn't work, the bike is still stalling. The bike has now been at the dealer for over a month and they can't seem to figure out what the problem is. They just keep replacing random parts to try and correct it. This is a seriously dangerous issue that bmw needs to address correctly or someone is going to get killed. My guess is the mapping unit for the bike isn't mapped correctly and they need to design one that is or can be adjusted properly. *tr

Engine stalls constantly when coming to a stop. Sometimes stalls when just cruising. *tr

Had stalling recall performed in approximately january 2011. Software update has failed to correct the stalling condition. The engine still stalls under a variety of conditions, but especially in stop and go riding. Previous recall has failed to correct the stalling problem. *tr
