• Recall 15599 [USA]: The harness wires can be damaged or could break or pull out of the ignition switch. if the harness wires were damaged but not broken or disconnected, the electrical system could be affected while the motorcycle is being driven. hesitation, misfiring, or "cutting out" could occur increasing the risk of a vehicle crash.
  Vehicle description: motorcycles. A sheet metal plate mounted to the front of the frame below the instrument cluster can cause the wiring harness to be stretched too tight as the handlebars are turned fully to one side. In addition, the wiring harness is attached to another harness with a cable tie that is placed too far forward limiting the handlebar movement.
  dealers will relocate the wire tie connecting the two wiring harnesses to a point further back from the original location so that the ignition switch wiring harness has sufficient freedom of movement. Also if the wiring harness is found to be damaged, the ignition switch (with harness) will be replaced.
  owner notification is expected to begin by late february 1998.Owners who take their motorcycles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact bmw at 1-800-831-1117, option #5.Also contact the national highway traffic safety administration's auto safety hotline at 1-800-424-9393.

• Recall 17861 [USA]: The hose can abrade to the point where the hose will leak brake fluid, resulting in a loss of the rear brake. also, brake fluid leaking onto the rear tire can impair the motorcycle's dynamic stability.
  The rear brake hose can contact the rear tire as the rear suspension moves through its range of travel.
  dealers will modify the hose guide and re-route the rear brake hose to insure that it cannot contact the rear tire throughout the range of suspension travel.

• Steering lock/ignition switch wiring investigation as of 19971114

  Bmw will conduct a safety recall to remove the sheet metal plate and relocate two wiring harnesses so that the ignition wiring harness has sufficient freedom of movement throughout the range of motion of the handlebars.Wiring harnesses found damaged, will be replaced.No further action is necessary.This investigation is closed.

Final drive failure -- large bearing. *tr

Transmission failure -- 2nd gear will no longer stay engaged under normal acceleration. Bike is out of warranty. Until rebuild, avoiding 2nd gear use

When shifting down into second gear, the transmission would jump out of gear while accelerating, causing the bike to lurch and distract the consumer. The dealer was notified. Ts scc

The transmission jumps out of 3rd gear under acceleration and the clutch slips under load due to faulty input shaft seal, both components still function but present a danger while driving.Nlm

Front alumini wheel which while driving over pot holes/road hazards, etc., wheel rim bend which may have caused a loss of control. Dealer said to put more air in the tire than specified, but the problem still exists. *ak
