Known Recall Investigations
  • Parking brake failure investigation # PE03057

Odi opened pe03-057 to assess parking brake ineffectiveness in the subject vehicles. These vehicles are equipped with four wheel disc brakes that incorporate a single-shoe drum-in-hat parking brake independent of the service brakes.Complaint and warranty data indicate that the parking brake linings tend to wear out early in the life of the vehicle (at an average of 24 months in service), reducing the parking brake systems torque below that needed to immobilize the vehicle.Gm has attributed this accelerated wear to foreign material intrusion and a failure of the brake shoe to properly self-center within its brake drum.Effective with the start of my 2003 production, a newer reduced force hold-down clip was introduced to facilitate brake shoe disengagement from the drum surface. This part is also available at the service level for the my 1999-2002 vehicles.Gm has indicated that the paking brake is intended to operate in conjunction with the transmission to immobilze parked vehicles, and that in many cases, accelerated parking brake lining wear is caused by rough use, vehicle modifications, and driving with the parking engaged. Odi has upgraded the preliminary evaluation to an engineering analysis to gather further information concerning parking brake usage factors and the circumstances surrounding the seventeen reported vehicle crashes.

  • Vacuum brake booster investigation # PE01001

Alleged that the vacuum brake booster can fail resulting in loss of brake effectiveness and extended stopping distances.

The vehicle is 16 years old. It currently has 201,352 miles. The body is starting to rust over the rear tire and the frame is really rusted. Driver power window switch went out and rolled itself down and cant get it to go up at all. Really love the truck but gm could have built it to last longer..My 1974 gmc is in better shape than this truck is and its nearing 40 years old.

CrashNoN 3 InjuredNone20060212

Was traveling approximately 25 miles per hour toward intersection. Applied brakes but oddly pedal seemed to go to floor with zero braking action. Subsequently, my vehicle entered intersection during red light. Was struck on drivers side by 18-wheeler crossing intersection and then my vehicle's forward momentum caused a frontal impact to 18-wheeler crossing intersection from the passengers side. Air bag did not deploy. Vehicle was a total loss. My wife sustained a fractured rib, bruised sterum and cervical spine dislocation. My two children ages 6 and 9 sustained cuts to the head from flying glass requiring stitches and glue. I attempted to have general motors inspect the vehicle; however, they were un- willing to pay a $500.00 fee for wrecking yard to move vehicle for inspection. Brakes and air bag failure !!!! Both problems that have been previously identified by other vehicle owners. *jb
