Known Recall Investigations
  • Steering column separation investigation # DP03002

Mr. Larry a. Sackey submitted a petition to the national highway traffic safety administration (nhtsa) by letter dated april 18, 2003, requesting that nhtsafurther investigate the defective collapsible steering shaft system on 1987-1995 vehicles manufactured by the daimlerchrysler corporation. In part because of 49 cfr ? 30120(g), nhtsa has decided to limit the scope of the petition vehicles to 1993-1995 models, excluding the 1993 jeep grand cherokee and 1994-1995 dodge ram series trucks that were recalled (93v210 & 96v230) for steering column failure. If the analysis of these vehicles had identified a potential problem, the scope could have been expanded in an investigation.A review of odis data base shows no recent complaints and a lack of a complaint trend concerning the subject issue on the subject vehicles as a whole or by individual models. Therefore, the petition is denied. For details, see federal register notice volume 68, no. 130, july 8, 2003.

My dodge caravan has a lifetime warranty due to a recall on the abs brake system that was originally installed. Turns out the original owners brought the van in for this recall, but the part was not replaced. So years later it gave out. The van has 36k miles, so if it was replaced when the previous owners brought it in everything would be fine. (the previous owners were older and disabled, so i dont think they realized nothing was done) anyways, dodge is refusing to fix the abs system, and tell me they don't have a diagnosis tool, so they cant fix it. My mechanic was able to id what was wrong, but was unable to order a part due to this lifetime recall. They are also saying they cant locate the parts in the system, but i find that hard to believe. What they offer me was a made up amount of what they think my van is worth (they said kelley blue book value in fair condition, which is not correct i come up with over twice that amount on kbb.Com and my van is in very good condition and is a mobility modified van, meaning it has a handicap ramp, built in tracks for tie downs, and is dropped6-8 inches, with air lifts.). Which is 1/3 of what i can sell it for on craigslist, and 1/2 of what i paid with my recent parts i put in to make it like new. So here's my question, what does lifetime warranty mean on a recall? Do they have to fix it? Or am i stuck with what ever they want to do? Please advise. This was an important vehicle, as it was to be used to move a handicap person around.

This van is subject to recall 96v099000. Under this recall there is a lifetime warranty on the actuator piston assembly and pump motor. The breaks have stopped working twice previously and were repaired under the recall. The breaks stopped working for the third time. The van was towed into richardson chrysler on june 24, 2013. Chrysler no longer makes the parts. At first they could not find the part and now the shipping date continues to be extended. Neither the dealer nor the chrysler national parts service group can tell me when they will get a part. It is now august 5, 2013.How long do i have to wait for a part on a lifetime warranty? Because of the age of the van, chrysler refuses to provide a car for me to drive. Can they avoid a lifetime warranty by claiming they can't find the parts? I have spoken to at least three different "customer service" people and they all tell me they don't know when the part will be delivered to the dealer. *tr

1993 dodge grand caravan. Consumer writes in regards to anti-lock brakes system recall and seeks assistance for repair work. *smd the dealer diagnosed the problem as a failed brake actuator piston and pump/motor failure. While the recall outline the warranty on most of the abs components as 10 years or 100, 000, the coverage for the brake actuator piston assembly and pump/motor was clearly noted as having lifetime coverage. The dealer initially informed the consumer the repair, estimated at $ 1,710 exceeded the value of the vehicle and would not be covered. The consumer then escalated his concern to chrysler care case management group in which they stated the time period had expired. The consumer faxed chrysler documentation regarding the recall and lifetime coverage for the components that were broken, chrysler then responded by saying the brake fluid was contaminated and hence the warranty would not be honored. The consumer then faxed chrysler a receipt from a licensed repair station for the brake work done. The consumer believed chrysler was creating excuses not to cover the repairs.
