• Recall 41962 [USA]: Either circumstance may result in the vehicle rolling away without warning.
  On certain passenger vehicles, the floor shifter ignition-park interlock may fail and allow the shifter to be moved out of the park position with the key removed. An inoperative interlock may also allow the key to be removed when the shifter has not been placed in the park position.

• Recall 14262 [USA]: Fuel leakage in the presence of an ignition source can result in a fire.
  Vehicle description: passenger vehicles built with 3.5l engines. The fuel injection delivery system can leak fuel from some of the sealing o-rings or from hair line cracks in the thermoset fuel injection rail.
  dealers will replace the fuel rail o-rings and reinforce the outlet (passenger) side fuel rail. Vehicles showing fuel leakage on the outlet fuel rail must have the outlet rail replaced which includes changing the upper and lower injector o-rings. However, if a vehicle is leaking fuel from the o-rings or from a cracked fuel line, the vehicle should be taken into a dealer to have this repaired as soon as possible.

• Fuel rail, brake fluid, chassis investigation as of 20041013

  On september 5, 2004, mr. Robert galenty of iselin, nj, petitioned the agency to conduct defect investigations of certain model year (my) 1993-1997 vehicles produced by daimlerchrysler corporation.His petition identified three issues of concern: 1) fuel leaking from the fuel injector rails; 2) brake fluid contamination resulting in brake failure; and 3) susceptibility of the vehicle frame to damage while the vehicle is being towed.Mr. Galanty alleged that his 1996 dodge intrepid had each of these three problems.Concerning fuel rail leakage, daimlerchrysler commenced a recall (98v-184) of approximately 722,600 vehicles to address engine fuel rail leaks that could lead to a fire, including those vehicles cited in the petition and the petitioners 1996 dodge intrepid.On october 7, 1998, nhtsa opened a recall query investigation (rq98-018) to evaluate the adequacy of the recall remedy.That investigation was closed on july 8, 2002 without requiring further action by daimlerchrysler.Very recently, on june 9, 2004, nhtsa denied a petition (rp04-001) to reopen rq98-018 after finding that there was no new information that would indicate any basis for reopening it.This is still the current position of nhtsa on this issue.Concerning brake fluid contamination and frame alignment, a review of nhtsas database shows no other complaints on either one of these issues on the vehicles cited in the petition.

  The manufacturer reports above are based on daimlerchrysler¿s (dc) analysis of model year (my) 1998 (population = 356,384) and 1999 (population = 486,948) ja, jx and lh family subject vehicle data (earlier mys excluded).The population number includes all mys.The precise number of duplicates between odi and dc reports cannot be determined due to missing or incomplete information.The fatality incident involved an elderly person who attempted to stop a roll away vehicle and received fatal injuries.Odi also gathered information on my 1997-99 prowler vehicles in this investigation. The prowler vehicles were manufactured with a different design shifter mechanism (the shift lever is shorter).There are no complaints of prowler interlock failure in odi¿s database, and dc has received no reports either.The prowler is excluded from the recall scope.The investigation involved a condition where the interlock system could fail (or be made inoperative by the operator) during vehicle use, possibly inadvertently.The interlock system is required under fmvss 114.With the transmission in the park position and the ignition key off, the combined action of pressing the shift button and pulling the shift lever rearward may result in the operator overcoming the interlock system and cause the mechanical linkage of the system to disconnect.When this occurs, there is no overt indication to an operator that the system is defeated, and an increased risk of vehicle roll-away exists.Under recall 04v021, dc will replace damaged shift mechanisms, and will install on all vehicles a device which inhibits the operator¿s ability to overcome the interlock and defeat the system.Beginning with my 2000, dc incorporated a brake and transmission shifter interlock (btsi) system into the subject vehicles.Introduction of btsi involved design changes to the shift mechanism, one of which resulted in reduced mechanical advantage (rma) of the shift button.The rma shifter requires increased forces to overcome the interlock system, making the shifter less susceptible to damage.

Tl* the contact owns a 1996 dodge intrepid. The contact stated that while driving 25 mph, smoke started to emit into the vehicle. The contact mentioned that once she merged to side of the road the vehicle became completely engulfed in flames. The fire department was contacted however, the vehicle was destroyed. The vehicle was not inspected for the cause of the fire. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure and current mileage was 176,000.

Vehicle was getting serviced for an oil change when technicians noticed the smell of gasoline in the engine oil. The vehicle was taken to a shop where the fuel rail was deemed to be leaking gasoline. The vehicle/part was listed (according to chrysler) as having been replaced in 1999. *tr

The air bag light stays on constantly which affects the electric windows & the heating/ac component. When the air bag light came on the windows & heater/ac stopped working. Additionally, the steering wheel locking mechanism is defective because it does not lock the steering wheel at all when the ignition is in the off position. I had a 1993 dodge intrepid with the same airbag light problem described above, i was able to get the light to go off at times by adjusting the steering wheel which allowed the electric windows and heater/ac to work until the light would come back on. The difference is i cannot get the airbag light to turn off at all on the 1996 model, the difference being between the two models is that the 93 had the gear shifter on the floor console; while 96 is on the column. The fact that the 93 and 96 both have the same airbag light affecting the electric windows & the heater/ac is not a coincidence. I've been told by mechanics that one thing should affect the other, but my personal experience shows that to be untrue. In my opinion there is a safety issue with either the sensors or something in the ignition switch, or possibly the wiring within the steering column due to possibility of manufacturing issues. This does pose as a safety issue because the windows will not roll down and the heater/ac will not cool/heat the car and the defroster cannot clear the windows of condensation; which creates obstructed view. The nonworking heater/ac severely restricts the times you can drive the car, unless you would like to risk heat exhaustion during summer or frostbite during the winter. *tr

On 15mar12 at approximately 5:30pm i was driving around a slight curve when the steering wheel suddenly pulled to the left. I immediately corrected while letting off the accelerator. After i regained control, the steering still felt extremely loose. *tr

I have owned a 1996 dodge intrepid for 6 months now and when i bought the car i was aware that the steering was a little loose, what i did not know was that the entire rack and pinion system as well as most of the tie rods around them were completely shot. My steering wheel grinds when i turn it left and right now and my steering has a horrific drift when turning from extreme to extreme. The bushings on the rack and pinion (as told by my mechanic) are completely gone. The broken pieces are rattling and vibrating so violently that the shimmying i feel on my car is actually caused by the steering. When i brake at high speeds (50mph) the steering pulls to either an extreme left or right. After doing research, i found out that i wasn't the only one struggling with these same issue. It seems like every owner of a 1996 dodge intrepid is experiencing the exact same issues. My mechanic said to me that he has no guarantee that my steering will work right. Driving down the road now i'm afraid i'll lose control of the vehicle. My girlfriend might frequently drive the vehicle but i am afraid that the steering may go out when she is driving it. I spoke with my mechanic and i am in the process of getting the defective parts replaced. I plan to save the parts that are defective in hopes that i will get some compensation for them. *tr

The airbag light will not go off it stays on all the time when it is on the heater windows horn and rear back up lights and rear defroster do not work with no heater/defroster it is near impossible to keep the ice off the inside and outside of the windows even while having the passenger constantly trying to scrape off the ice it just instantly re freezes causing very dangerous and hazardous driving conditions due to this the car went off the road and crashed into a deep ditch the air bags did not deploy and we had to be towed out of the ditch with a hoist and a lift and back to the road by a commercial wrecker from what i have seen and heard when searching the internet for information this problem is most likely caused by the clock stop the same problem which prompted a recall on dodge and chrysler mini vans of the same year why wasn't this car recalled too? I know i am not the only one with this problem there are thousands and thousands of complaints listed on the internet for this same problem by other dodge intrepid owners this is a very serious safety hazard also the fact the windows don't work can cause entrapment in the vehicle

Tl*the contact owns a 1996 dodge intrepid. While driving approximately 5 mph on normal road conditions, proceeding to make a left turn. There was a loud popping noise outside of the vehicle. Suddenly, there was a complete loss of steering. Immediately, the driver stopped in the middle of the roadway. The vehicle was towed to the residence. A certified mechanic inspected the vehicle. The failure was contributed to broken bolts which supported the tie rod bushing, and the rack and pinion. The vehicle was repaired for the malfunction. The failure mileage was unknown. The current mileage was 177,000.

Bolts holding tie rods to steering gear (rack) broke. Unable to steer vehicle. Fortunately, i was just leaving my parking lot and didn't cause any accidents and/or injuries. Paid $700 to have car fixed. *tr

It started out my steering would get really tight and you couldn't move it at all and it happens everyday now we took it to the dealership and they said it was the rack-n-pinion and so they fixed it and its still doing it. *tr

1996 dodge intrepid had to have alot of front end work done on tie rod ends and bushings worn out then while driving the car the brakes failed for no apparent reason and caused a accident whole front end totaled and the air bags did not deploy why is it that dodge auto air bags do not deploy. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 1996 dodge intrepid. The contact smelled a strong odor of gasoline coming from the vehicle. He also noticed that the fuel gauge indicator was moving faster than normal. The spark plugs were changed and the contact noticed gasoline leaking from the fuel injectors. He discovered nhtsa campaign id number 98v184000, but was unaware if his vehicle was included in the recall. The current and failure mileages were less than 160,000.

Repeated overheating problems resulted in replacing my radiator two times, thermostat three times and thermostat w/ breather housing two times. Cooling system includes external metal pipes which help circulate coolant to heater. The pipes are hidden from clear view and when mine sprung leaks due to their placement the leaks were diagnosed as being blown head/head gasket by three separate shops. Replacement of pipes solved overheating. Moisture gets trapped in and around the frame and subframe areas where the motor and transmission mounts are located and allows for unnecessary premature deterioration of all the mounts, bushings, main frame and subframe. This hidden condition has resulted in all mounts needing replacement, transmission dropping, front inner&outer tie rods and bushings going out, rack n pinion problems and the subframe collapsing. Documented records show that from 2004 through 2008 on average i drove 7000 miles a year. In that 28000 miles i replaced all motor/transmission mounts, all 4 inner&outer tie rod bushings/ends twice, radiator twice, thermostat housing twice, coolant pipes once and have gone through two sets of tires. I am replacing subframe, transmission mounts and front axle again. I continue fixing the car because i cannot afford to replace it but i am getting very concerned about the steering, axle or brakes giving out while driving on the highway or in heavier traffic. So concerned my documentation has been given to family members in case of fatality resulting from the defects mentioned. *tr

The steering system in a 1996 dodge intrepid totally failed while driving down the road. There was no advanced warning of any kind. It is by the grace of god that i did not wreck. The left bolt that screw into the rack/pin steering box stripped out and caused the right bolt to snap causing the entire steering to fail. *tr

My 1996 dodge intrepid, while moving forward at approximately 20 - 25 miles per hour struck an abruptly stopped vehicle. The airbag deployed late. Even while wearing my seatbelt, my forehead struck the top of the steering wheel, causing injury, and directly after thus my airbags deployed. *tr

Rack and pinion problems, the bushings that hold the rack and pinion keep going bad i've had the bushings replaced (november 2007) but then it failed again (september 2008). When ever i go around a turn there's a delay in my sheer almost resulting in a crash. *tr

There are severe problems with the steering and front components such as tie rods, bushing failure- multiple replacements, etc. Steering hasn't been right for years. Low mileage, strange noises, handling. Car doesn't stay in alignment, wheel doesn't return to center, car jumps out of driving lane. *jb

After purchasing car from auction, we took for emissions testing in order to purchase a tag. We were told the test could not be done because the computer had not finished the tests. We were advised how to complete the driving requirements and to come back after that. After several trips the tests still showed incomplete. Now six years later the odbii still will not complete and actually restarts every time the car is started. After lots of research we discovered the problem has been widespread and a defect that requires the ecu to be flashed with updated program information. There is even a tsb #181897 which covered this. Dealers are either unaware of this problem or want to charge close to $100. We believe that they should do this service at no charge since it is s defect that they are aware exists. There are no codes being thrown and we have been unable to tag the car for many years. *tr

On june 1st, 2007, i, sharon s. Hatcher, went to tuffy auto service center to get my car inspected. They proceeded to inspect my vehicle when they hooked it up to the computer to pass onboard diagnostic ii [obd ii] language...My vehicle was rejected because the powertrain control module needs to be reprogrammed! Well, i drove this car all day yesterday and last night and i took it to 2 other places and the same thing showed up like at tuffy auto service center!! I took it to steve white motors [chrysler, dodge, and jeep dealership] and their serviceman said to drive it around for 20-30 miles at a constant speed of 45-55mph. Well, i did that and i took at back to tuffy's auto service center and the same bullentin popped up again as like at the other places. So the complait that i am filing is on a 1996 dodge intrepid. I have been to 3 different places to get my car inspected and at all 3 places its showing the powertrain control module needs to be flashed or reprogrammed. The dodge dealership is not wanting to fix this problem. I have the technical service bullentin [tsb] reference number as along with paperwork from these places. I believe this to be a new recall on my vehicle that hasn't been researched or looked into on all makes of dodge intrepid's during 1996. I am not paying for a recall that has to do with. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 1996 dodge intrepid. While driving approximately 50 mph, the contact activated the rear defogger. Ten minutes later, he noticed smoke inside the passenger compartment. He pulled the vehicle to the side of the road and flames appeared. There were no warning lights illuminated prior to the failure. The contact extinguished the flames and drove to his residence. He attempted to restart the vehicle, but was unsuccessful. The dealer and manufacturer have not been notified. The current and failure mileages were 198,721.

Tl*the contact owns a 1996 dodge intrepid. While driving 35 mph, the check engine light illuminated and the vehicle shut off. As of september 13, 2007, the dealer had not inspected the vehicle. The failure mileage was 86,000 and current mileage was 103,301.

My 1996 dodge intrepid received a clean air waiver in the years 2003 and 2004. The obd could not be read by the emissions stations. For the past two years i have tried to rectify this problem without resolution. The clean air force says the software is updated and should be readable and dodge insists it's the caf software. There is a technical service bulletin (18-005-01) for 1996 dodge vehicles failing for readiness. I keep failing for readiness, and the dealer nor clean air has further information. I have been without my vehicle for two weeks while a master mechanic tries to solve my situation. The length of time tells me a favorable reply may not be forthcoming. I was told i can not sell the car, as the emissions issue will always be my (the owners) problem. I can not get a tag for this car and therefore legally can not drive it. What can i do? *jb

Fuel rail leaks in my 1996 dodge intrepid. I read that there was a recall of this vehicle but do not know if my vehicle problem was corrected as i purchased it in 1999. *nm

Tl*- the contact stated that he took his 1996 dodge intrepid to the goodyear auto shop 1/11/07 and was told that gas was leaking from the o-rings and the fuel injectors. The goodyear auto center recommended for the vehicle to be taken to a dealership. The contact stated that the mechanic said the leak was coming from the end of the rail. The contact did take his vehicle to andy lewis dodge and was told that he would be charged for a diagnostic, and the repair. The contact stated that the dealership informed him that the recall was not for the hair line crack in the fuel injector rail. The contact stated that the dealership informed him that his vehicle did have the o-rings replaced back in 1999. The contact has all repair orders.

Tl* - the contact a 1996 dodge intrepid which has a problem with the headlights: headlight mounting bracket, headlight assembly, and headlight lens are made of plastic corroded. The contact stated that this has been an ongoing problem. The failure caused poor visibility when the headlights werein use. Speed and weather conditions were not a factor. The contact would like to have the headlights replaced by daimler chrysler. *ak

On 11-23-06 i noticed a gas leak in my wife's, now ex-wife's, 1996 dodge intrepid. I took the vehicle to a local repair shop and they informed me of a possible recall on the vehicle. I then took the vehicle to the local dodge dealership, pommering dodge. Pommering mechanics checked the vehicle and the fuel rail was replaced at no cost under a prior recall related to bad o-rings in fuel rail. However, after fuel rail was replaced, dealership found that the o-rings in the fuel injector were also bad. O-rings and fuel injector were replaced at my expense, total cost $295.32. I inquired but the dealership explained that the fuel injector o-rings were not included in the recall. It seems apparent to me that if there was a serious problem with the o-rings in the fuel rail necessitating a recall, there may very well be a similar problem with the fuel injector o-rings. *nm

Tl*the contact owns a 1996 dodge intrepid. In december of 2006, the contact took his vehicle to the dealer for a recall repair. He informed the mechanic that he often smelled gas fumes in the passenger compartment. The contact was informed that the o-ring in the injectors were the source of the fumes and they were replaced. In the process of changing the o-ring, the mechanic noticed a crack in the fuel injection rail. The contact was then informed of a recall that described the same failure he was experiencing. He was notified that the previous owner of the vehicle already had the recall repaired, therefore the failure could no longer be repaired under recall. The contact stated that the tires should be functioning properly since they were replaced. The recall number was unknown. The failure mileage was 160,000 and current mileage was 174,000.

Nhtsa campaign id number : 98v184000 i own 1996 dodge intrepid. I am at least the 3rd owner of this car. Has this vehicle been recalled and repaired? I recently had the repairs done at my expense; october 6, 2006. This after smelling gas for months. Can i receive a reimbursement? *jb

On 3/16/06 the engine in my 1996 dodge intrepid caught on fire out of the blue. This car only had 60,000-70,000 miles on it. An investigator for chrysler corp. Looked at the car and filed a report with chrysler corp. Apparently there was a recall in 1998 having to do with fuel leaking from the fuel injection rail or o-rings which i was never aware of. Chrysler denied my claim and stated that they had sent me a notice in feb. 1999 at my current residence, although we did not even close on my house until may 1999. I never received a notice, and this fire was a result of a fuel leakage. When i called the customer claims resolution dept. And explained that i never knew about the recall etc. I was told that once chrysler makes a decision to deny a claim there can no rebuttal, and that i would need to contact a lawyer if i wanted to go any further in resolving this. Needless to say it would cost a lot to get a lawyer so i am stuck paying the costs to repair the engine which was a result of a defect caused by the manufacturer. *nm

Yes, i would like to enter a complaint on the 1996 dodge intrepid steering problems. Many people have had numerous problems with the steering , some even leading to death. I have not yet have any failures of my steering system, but it is going bad day by day. I don't have enough money to fix this problem (dealer quoted over $400), and it is my only form of transportation. I find myself praying every time i step into my casket on wheels that something wrong doesn't happen to me. I would like to know why there hasn't been any government recall for this item. This is not a maintenance issue with most other models so why should intrepid owners have to pay for the faulty design. Please help me out in this issue. Thanks. *ak

1996 dodge intrepid i bought this car as is and got it home after the same night i found out that the headlights don't work, which is a safety problem, i contacted the dealership that i got the car from the looked at it but would not fix it cause they claimed they didn't know the headlights didn't work, i even asked if they had to inspect the car before selling it, yes they did but never fixed the headlights... I would like this fixed asap. *nm

Dt*: the contact stated there was nhtsa recall campaign 98v184000 for the fuel system. The recall indicated the dealer would replace the fuel rail o-rings, and reinforce the outlet on passenger's side fuel rail. Also, it indicated that if the vehicle showed signs of fuel leakage on the outlet fuel rail the upper and lower injector o-rings would need to be replaced. The recall lead the contact to believe that the outlet fuel rail, the upper and lower injector o-rings would be replaced as part of the recall remedy if necessary. She was informed by both the dealer and manufacturer that this was not true. The recall remedy was completed according to the dealer and manufacturer guidelines. Additionally, the upper and lower injector o-rings were replaced. *ak the head gasket was replaced. Updated 01/25/06. *jb

1. The event occurred while backing into my driveway 2. 1996 dodge intrepid, 3.5l, 196,000 miles. The lower control arm mount that is a structural element of the car's subframe had metal fatigued and separated from the subrfame. This caused the bottom of the front passenger side wheel to move outward and lodge against the fender. When the wheel moved outward, the half-shaft pulled out of the constant velocity joint disengaging the drivetrain from the front wheel. 3. The replacement cost of the subframe was prohibitively expensive, so the car is going to be scraped.*jb

1996 dodge intrepid w/3.5 engine heard loud bang,smoke and oil,knocking noise. No warning at all, the gauges were in normal range, no prior trouble with engine. Had vehicle towed to goodyear tire store & upon inspection found two (2) holes in the right side of engine block near front of engine about the size of silver dollar,we think engine connecting rod for one cylinder failed and broke at bottom near crankshaft and punched both holes in block. *jb

Purchased 1996 dodge intrepid in may 2005. Following week had to take car back to dealer re: brakes, to no avail. A mechanic stated brakes will need to be replaced. Was advised that tires were not in such great condition either. Kept hearing strange sounds (rattling noises) from the car. In august, smoke started coming from under the hood. Car would not steer at all. Had to take car to mechanic, who told us fan belt had come off while driving. Power steering pump had to be replaced and power steering line. He also advised that rack and pinion would need to be replaced. Finally, on august 26th, was getting in car to drive and did not get very far, when the car came to a sudden stop and made a loud noise. Got out of the car and found two bolts on the ground. Please help !!! Distressed. Do we have any recourse here? Have receipts, but do not have old parts. *jb *ak *nm

My son was traveling to work on august 10 2005. He was driving a 1996 dodge intrepid. He was turning a corner when his steering control was suddendly and completely lost. His car went over a curb at an elementary school before he was able to stop. No one was hurt. Inspection of the car showed that 2 bolts that connect the tie rods to the rack and pinion steering were completely severed. A picture here is worth 1000 words. If you go to this site : http://www.Allpar.Com/fix/intrepid-steering.Html you will see a clear picture of 2 center bolts that connect the inner tie rods to the rack and pinion steeing. These were the 2 bolts that suddenly broke leaving the car with no steering control. If that had happened a week earlier when i was traveling with my son on a super highway i am quite sure that several people would be going to the hospital or worse. After the incident, i fould on the internet that this is a common problem with this car. I feel that a recall should be done to replace these bolts. His car had 112,000 miles on when the incident occured. You're recall of these cars i feel would save other people's lives. Thank you!

Recently i took my 1996 dodge intrepid into a collision repair specialist due to severe paint chipping on my hood. I was informed that this is common with dodge vehicles - that the hoods and trunks are rusting from the inside out due to the seams being pinched welded which is allowing moisture to get inside. Also found that the trunk is rusting from the inside out, but didn't know this until we were informed of the hood. The car only has 85,000 miles and has been taken care of very well. Other than that - it is in top condition. *jb

Consumer states: the engine cradle mount on the right side is rusted in the back, and the engine mount on the left is starting to rust in the back. Was making noise, got louder and louder, and couldn't see anything. *ak

Dt: consumer stated that 1996 , dodge, intrepid had a bolt sticking out on both back doors. This was a manufacturing safety device to keep the door closed in case of a collision. Consumer was in the back seat getting groceries out when her shoe string became entangled around the bolt and consumer fell on concrete and broke her hip. Consumer did not realize that string was entangled around the bolt. Consumer was rushed to the hospital, then she taken into surgery, she had to have 3 screws placed into her hip. Consumer was in the hospital for 5 days . Then, consumer was confined to a walker for several weeks until the bone healed. Consumer continued with physical therapy. The accident happened on may 18, 2005. Consumer had to be taken care of by someone else for quite a while. Consumer was in contact with chrysler in june 2005. They sent an inspector to inspect the vehicle and take pictures. Consumer received a letter from chrysler on july 5, 2005 stating that her claim was denied. Consumer had not filed any claim with chrysler. All consumer wanted was the vehicle to be recalled so that the bolt could be removed. Consumer had not taken anyone to chrysler. She just wanted to inform other people that the bolt was dangerous and could injure others more severely. Also, consumer had not done anything with the vehicle, and vehicle was still being driven. *ak

I had a 1996 dodge intrepid purchased in 3/04 from original owner. On /1/99 he had the fuel rail recall performed at palmer dodge. In february 25 2005 i smelled gas from the engine compartment. I took the car to shadeland dodge on 2/18/05 and they said the fuel rail and o-rings needed to be replace again and did so under the recall. On 4/21/05 i smelled gas again and was on my way to shadeland dodge, when i had to stop at a stop light. The car then caught on fire under the front hood. The car was not repairable. *ak

Under normal driving conditions, automatic in "drive" position shifts into 3rd gear causing high [300-400k] rpm and high fuel consumption. Condition can be corrected by stopping vehicle, turning switch off, waiting until signal lights have disappeared, then turning switch on again. This is also a safety hazard due to potential for rear-end collision while vehicle is in off. *ak

Have just began having problems apparently with the cernter take off system, have had it at the dodge dealership in kingsport (1-423-247-3155), they put steering bushings on it, costly repair, still did not touch the problem. I have a horrible problem steering the car, apparently there was a report issued to them about the system in 01-31-1999, but they did not notify the car owners. Have thought i had problems with a starter pulley, noticed some engine shake, slightly, a little smoke around the back bumper, the car has 74 thousand miles on it, i have my records and the previous owners records of repairs and oil changes that have been kept up. Online i have read of thousands of people who have wrecked and died because of the faulty center take off system of these cars, (bushings, the rack and pinion geer interface, inner tierod, on the steering gear) failure is unavoidable without a costly repair of the defective steering system at the owners expense. I have also read of engines siezing up at around 40 thousand miles even with proper matinence. I have no choice but to drive this car, i am disabled and cannot afford to buy another or have the factory defects fixed at my own expense. The dealership should have known about the noice of the lh family of cars, but instead have sent me down the road of costly repairs knowing full well that the repairs made will not fix this car. These cars are a hazzard and i cannot believe that the gov does not get involved and protect the consumer and others on the road from the prospect of horrible injuires and possible death due to this big corperation's faulty equipment. Dt: the consumer states received nhtsa recall 04v021000/chrysler recall c45 on 1996 dodge intrepid concerning floor shift. The consumer took the car into the dealership to have repairs done, and the dealer did not have the parts available. The dealer said that they would call the consumer when they came in. The consumer received 3 notices from chrysler on this recall during this time. The owner said that he has called the dealer to see if the parts were there. It has been over 6 months and the parts were still not available. The consumer has not called the manufacturer. The consumer received the first notice in march 2005. Consumer was driving at 70 mph, when vehicle started to fill with smoke. Consumer pulled over , then, saw flames coming from under the hood. The fire department responded, and the vehicle was totaled.*ak

The light gauges on the dashboard flickered on and off intermittently while driving. Driver applied the brakes, and the pedal went to the floor while approaching the intersection. Driver was able to maintain control of the vehicle by pulling over and turning off the vehicle. Then, driver restarted the vehicle, and drove it to the dealer. Mechanic determined that the electrical sensor needed to be replaced. *ak

Steering is loose, which makes it difficult to control the vehicle. Consumer is concerned that this will increase the risk of a crash. Manufacturer was notified by consumer. *ak

Consumer received recall campaign 04v0021000 for floor shifter ignition park interlock. Mechanic informed the driver that shifter cable was stretched, and driver was responsible for the payment of $200.00 to fix the problem. Driver informed the mechanic that recall repairs were not performed, and the issue had not been resolved. *ak

While at a steering wheel locked up. The vehicle was towed. The dealership was notified, but did not resolve the problem. *ak

I was involved in a car accident (i was the driver)in which my car was impacted by another vehicle (1997 full-size dodge van). The point of impact was the driver's side, the left front end of my vehicle (dodge intrepid, 1996). The impact was so strong that it caused the battery to break in half, among other damages. I was using the seat belt, and saw the airbag light come-on; but the air bag did not activate. I have not gone to the dealer with this information. Will do so, once the insurance company has completed its report. My car has been declared a total loss because the repair costs exceed the market value of the vehicle. I did not suffer major injuries as a result of this accident, even though the force of the impact did cause the seat belt to tighten its greeep and this did caused some brusing and severe chest and side pain. I am sending this complaint so that the problem can be noted and if it hasn't reported previously and corrected, that it be done, as to avoid others having the same problem, and face worse luck than i. *jb

The gear kicked out from neutral to drive on its own. Consumer took vehicle to dealer for repairs of transmission 2 months ago, but the problem recurred. *ak

The consumer stated the vehicle overheated. A new thermostat was placed in the vehicle. Several weeks later, while driving the vehicle overheated again. This time she had the vehicle towed to a dealer, who told her he thought that her motor was blown. But later she found that since the engine restarted, it may not have been the engine after all *jb

Leaking fuel injector o rings. Repair was refused by foot hills chrysler on 10/13/04. Nhtsa recall #98v184000. The fuel rail was resealed on nov. 28th 2003 by lithia foothills and subsequest to the repair the injector o rings are leaking. Invoice from lithia did not indicate that a pressure test was performed. The recall states that if the o rings fail under pressure they "will be replaced as well". This is the third time for this recall. The first time was in jan. 1999. Recall work was performed by lithia foothills at that time. *jb

While driving children to school my wife stated the car "drifted" in the lane a lot without steering input. I took it for test drive, noticed a strange "feel" to the steering and the drift she spoke of. I decided it was unsafe for her to drive and took it to a local repair shop to be checked. The mechanic put it up on the rack and immediately recognized the problem--the left side steering rack bushings were completely gone. He gave us a quote for the repair (it is being done today), and then he pulled me aside to let me know he had seen this type of failure several times before and suggested i contact the dealer to see if they would "goodwill it" (his term) as he says it was his understanding the part was defective as originally manufactured and that a new style bushing was available that did not deteriorate like this one and was much safer. Contacted the dealer in auburn and talked to the service manager, he said car is too old (1996) so we are out of luck and quoted me a repair price almost double the local mechanic. *ak

Headlights are not very bright, even on high beam. It is very difficult to see at night because the headlights do not reflect but a few feet in front of the vehicle. It's even harder to see when a vehicle is coming toward you.*ak

When the steering wheel was turned to the right, vehicle went to the left. Upon lifting the hood consumer noticed that the steering rod was hanging down off the gear box, and a sheared bolt was laying in the engine compartment that was cut in half. Vehicle was towed to the dealership, who indicated that gear box was in pieces and needed to be replaced.*ak *tc

I parked my car with the floor shifter in the park position and my key would not come out. I tried several times to turn the wheel and i checked the floor shifter and everything seemed to be the way it should. I drove my car back home and the next day i took it to a local garage. The mechanic at the garage informed me that this was a recall and i should call a chrysler dealer. I did that and took the car in for repair. I also had an unrelated issue with the battery at the same time which they repaired. When i arrived to pick my car up they informed me that they did not have the parts to fix the recall but i could still drive the car. If the key doesn't want to come out then just slam the shifter into park and the key should come right out. I can't believe the dealer told me to do that. It can't be good for the car. I called chrysler and they informed me that there were no chrysler dealers in the pittsburgh area that had the parts to fix this recall. This recall is two months old. I know they are required to notify you of a recall, but aren't they also required to have the parts available to fix it. What happens if there is more damage done to my floor shifter because of having to slam it into park. What if the car rolls away and hurts someone or damages property certainly my insurance won't have to pay for that, clearly chrysler is responsible. I just want to know how i can get my car fixed. When the consumer went into the dealership to make an appointment to have the floor shift ignition-park interlock recall 04v021000 repairs done dealership indicated that they will need 2 days to order the recall part, and they will call the consumer when the part arrived. While traveling on the highway and without prior warning fuel smell was coming though the vents. Consumer pulled of the road, opened the hood, and found that fuel rail was leaking gasoline. *ak

I have had this ongoing problem with my 1996 dodge intrepid with the brakes. First i thought i just needed new brakes. Well i had new brakes put on the car and then a week later, the brakes caught on fire. Which damaged the new brakes, the rotar, the calliper, and the spindle. Then two weeks later i took the car for the fuel regulater to be replaced and the rotars needed to be turned again already. Then in another week and a half the brakes caught on fire again. There is absolutely no sense in this kind of trouble with a brake system. I am a single mother and i have to drive my car with my son in there. It is my belief that if you are gonna make a product you should stand behind it. Engine wise the car seems to be fine runs like a charm but that doesnt do me a bit of good if i cant drive it. In apirl 1996 i purchased a new 1996 dodge intrepid (vin 2b3hd56f3th52925) from philips motors in philip sd. After approximately 2 years and 30,000 miles i began to notice a grinding noise and clunking in the steering while driving the vehicle from a "cold soak" condition. After approximately 5 minutes and once the car warmed up, the noise would cease. Over the course of the past 5 years i have taken the vehicle to five different repair shops in an attempt to isolate and repair the problem. Only when i moved to germany (current assignment in the usaf) did a german mechanic discovered the problem; worn rack and pinion steering gear bushing which are allowing the entire unit to shift left and right whenever the steeringwheel is moved. Over the past five years i've lived with this problem, i've noticed a continued degredation is steering crispness and increase noise as described above. Only when i researched the problem on the internet did i find 2 service recalls for this problem (19-03-97a and 19-001-01). The problem has gotten so bad, about 3 weeks ago i nearly lost control of the car in a sharp turn on a country road here in germany. I was able to recover from the turn (with the assistance of the front tire hitting the curb and bouncing me back into the lane) -- no one was hurt and the car (except the tire) was undamaged. I find it amazing that published service bulletins go un-noticed and high risk components such as steering systems go un-recalled despite potentially catastrophic consequences. My particular problem is further exasperated by the high speed nature of german autobahns.*ak

I took my 1996 dodge to the dealer for recall #790 on 03/29/99 and i can prove that they did not replace the o-rings or reinforce the fuel rail. The car started leaking fuel and i am lucky that it did not burn up. I feel that someone should check and see if this 1 dealers fraud or if it is nationwide.*ak

The rack an pinion bushing failed had to replace the whole rack and pinion.Also the axle had to be replaced the ring for the abs and tracion control come off the axle.Theres a short in the igntion switch, the gauges dont work, and the car wont drive it gos in default.*ak

Problems with my dodge intrepid: at 75000 miles i had to replace the rack and pinion steering, then i had problems with the bolts that connect the rack and pinion to the steering backing out and it actually fell out and one wheel was strait and the other was turned. Luckilly i was at a stop sign getting ready turn .Had to have towed home. Found out thousands of people are having same problem. At 80000 miles which has been a couple of weeks ago driving down the road car automatically shift into low one. Does this a couple of times. Had new filter and fluid replaced. Even worse now. Find out that thousands of people having same problem. Find out that dodge and chrysler lh with 42le automatic trans are defective. They have used these trans from 1994 to present and they fail. I could believe it. Chrysler even has its own special tranny fluid to help prevent failure problems but it doesnt work. I would like chrysler to be accountable for selling moreless junk. If i were to sell a defective product to consumers, they would come after me to either recall it ,fix it ,or re-emburse the consumers, yet nothing is being done that i know of to get chrysler to help the consumer fix their failing transmission problems. I am now going to spend $1500.00 to replace my tranns with another one that will fail in the near future. I cant afford another car, and i will never ever buy another chrysler product. I just turned 18 and graduated high school got a job bought a so called good used intrepid. It looked as though it was well maintained i paid over $3,300 for the car and taxes. I drove it for less than ten days and less than 200 miles. Now it will not shift out of first gear. I took it to the dodge dealer where they said the transmission kickedout 4 differant internal codes. They said it had to be replaced. Then i found out about other people that has had problems with their intrepid transmissions.If dodge would have posted a letter of the problems they have had with the intrepid transmissions i would have never bought a dodge intrepid! I like the car but the bank that i received the loan through said the car is not worth $5,700.00. That is how much that 1996 dodge intrepid will end up costing me. Not counting the loss of transportation to get to and from work.

When driving at night both headlights moved out of place, causing consumer to pull off the road to realign the headlights. Consumer stated that the plastic brackets, which support the headlights broke which caused the headlights to fall out of the housing. *ak *nm

Vehicle description: passenger vehicles built with 3.5l engines. The fuel injection delivery system can leak fuel from some of the sealing o-rings or from hair line cracks in the fuel injection rail. Dealers will replace the fuel rail o-rings and reinforce the outlet (passenger) side fuel rail. Vehicles showing fuel leakage on the outlet fuel rail must have the outlet rail replaced which includes changing the upper and lower injector o-rings. Consumer has the same problem. However this vehicle was not recalled due to the vin.*ak

In june of 2002 my a/c compressor "froze" leaving me without my air conditioner during june, july, and part of august. I had the compressor and other components fixed at the end of august at the cost of $504.00. I got to use my a/c for a whole 3 weeks until the weather cooled off! Now (may 2003), my a/c doesn't work again! Apparently there is a leaky h-valve and other components that need to be replaced at the cost of $680.00. I refuse to shell out any more money for this piece of crap car as this is my 3rd complaint to nhtsa. *jb

Steering issues rampant with my 1996 dodge intrepid. I have already had to have some work done on it and now i have a problem with the steering making a clunking noise when the steering wheel reaches the center point.*jb

The multifuntion switch that controls the headlights and wipers started to smoke and burned out. My winshield wipers came on and i lost my low beam headlight. In the process of replacing the switch i found the wiring and plug to be burned and melted. One wire had about 3/4 inch insulation missing. The multifunction switch and wire lume now have to be replaced at a cost of $200.

The vehicle was involved in an accident, and the seat belt failed to properly restrain the consumer. *jb

I own a 1996 dodge inrepid with 61,255 miles on it as of today ( 1/16/2003). This vehicle has had three failuers of the water pump at a cost to repaire of $500.00 each time to repaire. I have also had the front suspension fail, which cost $1185.00 to repaire. This vehicle is not driven hard, mileage will show maybe 10,000 miles per year. I feel by the number of complaints on your system that the manufacture has had more than normal number of complaints for both these problems. I think a recall is called for, and some sort of remibrusment for the cost of repaires made. All my repaires where done by a goodyear facility or dealership.

Excessive rack and pinion steering noise especially in cold weather, rack and pinion mounting bolt bushings almost completely gone. Car has severe steering shifting when rounding corners or curves. Diagnoses requires new rack and pinion replacement.

I would first and formost like to report the premature wear of the steering rack on my 1996 dodge intrepid at around 77,000 miles. The rack had to be replaced at a hefty price. I have since learned that this is an alarmingly widespread problem with chrysler lh bodied vehicals, especially dodge intrepids, and has been for many years. I had the rack replaced about three years ago and already my car is showing symptoms of more steering related problems. I drive only a moderate amount so this could not be just "usual wear and tear". In addition to the steering rack, within the last three years i have had to have an axel replaced, all of the breaks due to prematurly warped rotors (the breaks actually went out once and i almost rear ended someone), the multifunction switch had to be replaced, the transmission shifts hard and gets stuck in gear for a mysterous reason no one can figure out, and a loose wire caused the car caused multable drivability problems. (the date below is not accurate, these things occured between 2003 and present)

I bought this car less than two weeks ago, i have not even put two thousand miles on the car and the transmission has quit working in third and fourth gear. The motor has begun to use oil and is knocking. While driving,the car loses power and even dies. It also,while idling,begins to revs the engine to an unsafe level and you must shut the car off. I contacted the dealer i bought the car from, greene county auto auction & sales - 6319 hwy. 49 south paragould, ar 72450. The salesman i bought the car from didn't want to take the car back and was extremaly rude when i suggested that he try to work with me on getting the car fixed or trading it in. As i said i have had the car but a short time and all these problems are occuring. He assured me that the car was in good condition and that he had, had it serviced and checked out and there was nothing wrong with it.

We started to experience a fluid leak on the car. The dealer, upon examining the car, determined that the intake manifold was leaking. They also determined that 2 bolts involved in that installation had sheared. There had been no work done on that area of the car. When are you guys going to take some action against this very serious design/part failure. I have searched the database and there are a lot of complaints about steering failure. This will cost someone their life if it hasn't already. Here is the problem. The bushings on the inner tie rod deteriorate. On my car it happened to the passenger side bushing at 30,000 miles. I was able to replace the tie rod(they didn't just sell the bushing). At about 33,000 the other one went out so i replace it. Had i not known what to look for (the wavering to the left and right on a straight road allerted me) i could have eventually sheered the bolts on the gear housing. At 71,000 the stearing started acting up again. Well this time the bushings that hold the gear housing to the frame have deteriorated. Fortunately it was caught in time. What happened here was as you steered left or right the gear housing would move about three inches. As you would oversteer, the steering gear box would go as far one way as it could then it would actually turn the wheels. It is obvious to me that there is a major defect in the design of the steering. Please do something before someone dies and before we have to waste more money paying dodge for something that should break this easy. They sell us a piece of crap and we have to pay them big to repair it. Do something already!*ak

Headlight dimmer switch is malfunctioning. The headlights are stuck on their high-beams. When cycling between the low/high beams, the low beam headlights will come on in addition to the high beams, which will not turn off. When "flicking" the dimmer switch or trying to flash someone, sometimes the headlights go out completely, leaving me with my parking lights.*jb

While driving at 30 mph consumer rear ended another vehicle and none of the air bags deployed. Then, while sitting there consumer was rear ended by another vehicle at 50 mph, and the air bags still did not deploy. Contacted dealer. *ak

Bushings supporting 3 of the 4 connection points of the front subframe cradle have failed, resulting in a clunking sound when moving. The clunking sound has been around for a long time, but has gotten worse recently. In looking under the car i discovered that the lower halves of the rubber bushings have fallen out at three of the four locations. This cradle supports the engine, transmission, and all steering components.

Entering highway and pushed on gas pedal hard to merge into traffic, gas throttle stayed open and car kept going faster and faster. Was going from 10 mph to 80+ mph for about 3/4 of a mile and somehow was finally able to slow car down enough to drop car into park. Engine ran hard for another 10 to 12 seconds before it disingauged from transmission. Found out that cable from gas pedal had a frayed wire and was getting stuck on the plastic housing that covers the wire. Though my life was coming to an end because i could't stop my car and it kept getting faster and faster. Thought i would have to ditch it somewhere and take a chance on making it. The failure of my air conditioning system. Observed smoke coming out of the vents. Turned air conditioning system offbriefly. When i turned the system on again it no longer worked. The system was putting out warm air. I take it to be repaired and it only worked a few days. The result is no air condition system, inoperative. I have put spent so much money to get the system fixed. *ak

The failure component is the steering rack assembly. The failure indication was a clunking sound, heard when the vehicle was cold (under 40f.). Once the vehicle/steering warms up, the clunking noise goes away. Apparently, from reading other reports, the clunking sound is the precursor to total steering failure. In my case, i am having the dealer replace the assembly at a cost of approximately $1200. This is a very basic component, which should not fail during the normal course of vehicle ownership. I am attempting to have damler/chrysler either cover the cost of failure up front, or reimburse me for the repair. So far, the dealer has indicated to me that the failure is not covered by any warranty process. I feel that this is a very serious safety issue and should be covered by the manufacturer. Loss of life could occur if the steering fails.*ak

The rubber bushings (under the bolts) that connect the rack and pinion to the chassis of the automobile eroded and disintegrated making the bolts loose and rendering the rack and pinion to become very loose. The bolts could have broken or snapped off and the entire rack and pinion could have fallen off, maybe at a high rate of speed causing a major accident. The rack and pinion is now damaged and will have to be replaced.*ak

The fuel rail was repaired as part of a recall in 1998. The same part has failed again in the same fashion with the dangers involved.

1. The inner problem happan 2 times in less then a year. The weel is not reacting good, and when you tern left the weel stays there, and when you tern right it stays there. The second problem is that the engine is shaking on reverse and making noice. The engine holders are broken. *ak

I have a 1996 model dodge intrepid. About a year and half ago, in one rainy morning i drove my car to work, just a few minutes driving on the road at approximately 50 mph, the engine quit working... I had the car towed to the garage and finally took it to the chrysler dealership to get it checked, and was told i have a intake gasket problem, it cost me more than $300 to get it fixed. However, similar problem still comes and goes mysteriously after that. The most recent occurrence was about 2 month ago. I have a 1996 dodge intrepid i bought in 1998 i have had numerous steering problems with this vehicle and have spent much money to fix this car. The bushings have been replaced,the bearings have been replaced, the power steering pump has been replaced, the steering hoses have been replaced,all this was done at under 55,000 miles and luckily gefore my fiance and my children were seriously hurt in an acident due to steering lose or control. These problems totaled around 2,500.To fix. Now we are having the same problems again with the car having 90,000 miles now the power steering pump is out again and the rack and pinion is out and it is impossible to steer. Under normal driving conditions the fuel line fitting failed at the point where the fuel line enters the fuel injection rail. The result was a large amount of sprayed gas all over the top of the engine. I was lucky that the engine was cold and that the gas did not ignite from the exhaust manifold or a spark from the alternator. I my opinion this should not happen under any circumstance. If this happend on a summer day the car would have been engulfed in flames in a matter of seconds. I feel that this was a serious enough defect that i am taking the time to fill out this form. The car is scheduled to be repaired tomorrow 3/8/01 so the part in question will be available if needed. I have owned the dodge for almost 2 years, this is the second waterpump that i have had to replace. The first was covered under my 3/36000 mi warrentee. The same thing happened this time. The water pump seesed,which in turn took out my timing belt, also took out a few other components. I contacted the company they told me that there was nothing that i could do because i didn't have the car towed to there service garage. I had it towed to my machanic. While backing out of driveway, right side inner tie rod connecting bolt broke causing loss of steering to right front wheel and total loss of contol of vehicle. Further inspection revealed failure of both inner tie rod bushings.Veh towed to dealer for repair. Daimer chrysler contacted and refused to compensate for repairs. Cost of repair $ 1600.00 which includes cost of a remanufactured steering unit because the tie rod bolt shearred off inside the unit.

Recall 98v184 000/fuel injection system leakage: received a manufacturer's recal 790 notice concerning dealer's corrective action that stated the following: dealers will replace the nitrile rubber o-rings in the fuel rail with fluorocarbon o-rings. If fuel injectior o-rings leak after pressure testing, injector o-rings will be replaced as well. Both dealer and manufacturer informed consumer that they were only responible to replace o-rings, and injector would be at consumer's cost. Manufacturer's service representative is deanna furnari. *ak both the dealer and the manufacturer claimed they were responsible only for the fuel rail o-rings. *yh

Problem w/steering column affected alignment causing need for new tires.

In cold weather (under 40 f) after the first couple of years the steering makes loud banging noises when wheels are turned for the first 10 minutes after startup. Cause: rack & pinion bushings dry out. Ultimate risk: steering will loosen over time. Cure: on 1996 model only, bushings are not replaceable. Entire rack must be replaced at a cost of $1200. Poor design means 1) potential for steering failure 2) warm-weather drivers won't have any warning 3) price discourages repair. This could turn into a problem as these cars age. *ak

Had the lt tie rod replaced and now the rt is bad, my wife normally drives the car and i happened to drive the car . I noticed the car was steering odd and when i went around a corner it felt like the front end was shifting. When letting off the gas and giving it gas the car would torque steer very bad jumping to the left. I took the car to a local shop who found the problem right away, recommended that we didn't drive the car. He also showed me the steering rack bushings were going bad, he says the only way to repair is to replace the entire rack as the bushing are not available by themselves as are the 95's and below. He told me that both are very common problems for the dodge intrepid and both could have serious problems with their failures. I am going to have the repairs to the tie rod done promptly and if the rack is road worthy i will delay that repair but keep a close watch on further deteriation of the bushings. *ak

Inner tie rods both failed during a backing operation - backing out of parking area - both bolts apparently sheared after partially backing out - it looks as if the keeper plate was crimped on an edge of the bolts instead of the flat- steering was lost entirely. *ak

As my wife was in a parked position in a parking lot, she proceeded to pull out. To do this she had to go around a light pole. As she pulled out she hit the light pole. She got out of the vehicle and inspected the damages. The damages were, crushed left front bumper, a small nic on the hood and a damaged left front headlight light assembly. With damaged not looking severe, she proceeded to bring the automobile home. On her way she immediately experienced a check enginge light, alternator ligh. As i went to inspect the car, i noticed the power steering pully was completely missing and the main serpentine belt was missing. The frame was no bent and the is no way that anything could have touched the power steering pump causing the pully to break off. I am courios to ask if this is a nown problem. When the car was purchased (used) in 3/99, the rear defroster didn't work. The car was sent to charlie thomas chrysler for repair and the fuseable link was repaired (6/99). On 10/25/00 the rear defroster was on and smoke started billowing out of the interior vents. I stopped the car and had the car towed to clearlake dodge for repair. The mechanic repaired wire harness damage leading up to the fuseable link and replaced the entire main wire harness due to melting and shorting in the main harness. The rear defroster circuit was discovered to be shorted into a metal clip and it is presumed that this caused the overload. The overload caused melting and scorching in the rear defrost circuit and the main wire harness. The fuseable link failed to protect the main wire harness. The failure of the fuseable link caused a dangerous condition that could have led to a fire or an accident (if all electrical power was lost).

Contiued transmission problems, repairs made 2times, dealer doesn't know why it happens, engine rpm surges extremly high.Average rpm at 60mph is 2000rpm, it is surging well over 3500rpm on a flat surface

The two inner tie rod bolts sheered at the steering gear side of the tie rods, causing total steering control loss of the vehicle, the bolts were removed and replaced, the original rack assembly was also replaced. *slc

Bushings worn on both left and right inner tie rods. This caused steering to shake and could have resulted in loss of wheel(s) while driving. Tires were worn badly due to tie rod problem. Remedy consisted of replacing both tie rods and both front tires.

While pulling out of a parking space, the steering failed. Subsequent examination showed that the inner tie rod attachment bolts both shearred off and the tie rods separated from the steering rack. The vehicle had these tie rods replaced in sept 98 and the steering rack replaced in jan 1999. Unknown if this is related to tsb 190899 but attachment bolts do appear to have failed from improper torque values.

I had almost constant problems i.E. Mechanical,equipment and fought a neverending battle with the dealership/warranty dept. During and after driving the vehicle, a 1996 dodge intrepid with a 3.3l engine,there was a strong smell of raw gasoline. I took the car in for service and the resolution was replacement of the fuel rail due to cracks and the fule injectors due to leaking o-rings. These problems are identical to those addressed in nhtsa campaign id number: 98v184000 which address the 3.5l engine in 1996 dodge intrepids.

Defective steering gearbox bushings. Bushings went defective after 70,000 miles, most of which were highway miles. Have noticed knock when first starting to turn wheel progressively getting worse. Recall 98v184000/fuel leakage: vehicle was taken in for recall repairs. When returned vehicle commenced to vibrate/ sacked/ran rough and hesitated. Left tie rod failed originally in june 99. In jan. 2000. The left tie rod separated from the rack and pinion gear assy. Tis resulted is loss of steering, but car was brought to a safe stop. This is the second failure of the tie rods and the firstt failure of the rack and pinion gear assy. I have never seen a car have this kind of failure before. I have grave concerns about trusting the safety of the rack and pinion steering on this car. *ak

While driving about 25 mph, all of sudden windshield wipers activated and smoke started coming from dashbroad. Smoke fogged up all windows, causing poor driver visibility. Driver quckly pulled into an automotive shop. A mechanic disconnected the battery. Mechanic found all three wiring harness were melted together. Repairs to vehicle through state farm insurance. *ak

There is a problem with the steering column bushings wearing out prematurely causing a banging noise in the steering it has been happening for a while now and i also found out that a coworker of mine who has the same car has the exact same problem and he only has 20,000 mile on his vehicle, so i called a couple of dealer and their service departments informed me that this is a known problem with the intrepids. I called the manufacturer (800-992-1997) to request a repair authorization and they were ignorant and short with me and said that there was nothing they were going to do about this. While driving at any speed on rough road or hitting a small bump, front end of the vehicle rattled. When vehicle was taken to the dealership, owner was told that steering rack and pinion assembly,and inner tie rod ends would need to be replaced because of bad bushings. Please provide any further information. *ak

The water pump failed on the highway, causing engine to overheat so bad the engine had to be replaced , all the while the temperature gauge stayed in the normal range. *ak

Consumer hears a banging noise in the steering column that goes down the shaft and feels like it's under the accelerlator, when the car warms up, the noise goes away, the power steering tensioner fell out and was replaced and the problems went away for a while, now the banging noise is present even when the vehicle has warmed up. *slc

While car was shut off for about 10 minutes while consumer was shopping, heard an annoucement that someone's car was burning in the parking lot. Fire department was called to the scene. It burned so badly that it was totalled. Driver s was affected the most by the fire. *ak

Rack & pinion has been replaced once & same symptoms are occuring again. There is a popping noise in the front when turning. Due to the failure of the steering, we have had to replace tires & struts sooner then normal. Brakes have also been replaced because rotors were bad & brake pads were warped. Rear window glass was removed & a new section between the rear door & back glass was replace while under warranty. The same condition exists again. The back door is very difficult to open due to misalaignment. Dealer refused to provide any service after original warranty. Chrysler corp. Authorized the replacement of rack & pinion, water pump, & rear wheel cylinders at 45450 miles. Due to defects, mainly in the steering, i continue to pay a mechanic to assess the safety of operation of this vehicle.

Air bag light is working intermittently. *ak

While driving vehicle there is a knocking noise and vibration which possibly could cause a loss of control and crash. Please provide further information. *ak

Steering rack bushings,sway bar links,and inner and outer tie rod ends. Experienced loss of steering control, barely avoiding a major accident with children in car.

While driving consumer noticed gas fumes in the car, and the fumes kept getting stronger and stronger. Vehicle was taken to garage. Mechanic informed consumer of a serious fuel leak. Fuel was leaking onto the manifold from the fuel rails and o-rings. A puddle of fuel had formed that could have ignited. *ak

Steering was getting shaky and uncontrollable due to a faulty inner tie rod. Dealer has replaced the inner tie rod. *ak

3 times to the dealership for front end repairs. Struts and bushings have been replaced. Last time taken in the steering rack was loose.

While going 35mph vehicle started making a clunking noise. Another driver noticed tire loose & informed the driver it was going back & forth & about to fall off. The right rear axle had broken. Managed to get to a service station. Then had vehicle towed to dealership for repairs. Vehicle was never involved in a crash nor was anything hit that would cause tracking arm to break. *ak

Consumer was pulling out of the parking lot with the steering wheel to the left when there was a loud noise coming from the vehicle.Rack pinion bolts broke, causing the steering wheel to spin, and the tires went straight. *ak the four bolts holding the steering housing to the firewall failed caused the steering to fail. *yh

The rubber that fits between the inner tie rod (ite) and the bolt that attaches the itr to the steering gear was completely worn away

Intermittently while at a stop vehicle lurged forward and stalled at an intersection which almost caused a crash 2x. Dealer could not determine the cause. Dealer wants to install a "co-pilot" so they can determine a problem. Please provide further information. *ak

There was a leakage within the water pump. Consumer had water pump replaced twice, and water pump is leaking again. And dealer states that the problem is coming from the engine too. *ak

Air conditioner transducer wire connector failed causing failure of thge air conditioner unit. Mjs

Engine overheated. Consumer pulled to side, added coolant, and it immediately reheated. Took vehicle to dealer, and they said engine head gasket needed to be replaced. Also, vehicle was unsafe because there was no power steering when car went dead. *ak

Cracked bushings in front left rack & pinion. Not accident related.

Transmission needed to be replaced after only 46,200 miles. Mechanic said it was caused by somthing breaking loose inside

I had to have my car towed to our local garage because of the water pump went. From what the garage mechanic told me was that it was leaking for a while with out being noticed. In turn, because of the leak it ruined the timing belt which also had to be replaced along with the water pump. My mechanic told me that it is highly unusual for a water pump to go on a 4 year old car with not that much mileage. This visit to the garage cost me $500.47 (parts & labor). *ak
