  • Recall 8513 [USA]: Daimlerchrysler recall no. 843. if this happens, the tube could leak, reducing the effectiveness of one-half of the diagonally split braking system, and resulting in longer stopping distances.
Vehicle description: passenger vehicles. The right rear brake tube can contact the exhaust system clamp and wear a hole in it.
dealers will inspect the brake tubes for visible evidence of contact with the exhaust system clamp. If the tube shows evidence of contact, it will be replaced. If no evidence of contact exists, the tube will be fastened with a clip.
owner notification began november 22, 1999.Owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact daimlerchrysler at 1-800-992-1997. • Recall 14241 [USA]: If this happens, the "ignition-park" interlock system will be nonfunctional.
Vehicle description: passenger vehicles equipped with automatic transmissions. The adjustment of the cable connecting the console shifter mechanism to the ignition key can cause a trapped key condition which can result in a low force required to depress the shift button. A combination of applying a mis-adjusted release button with a low force attempt to shift out of park with the key in the locked position, can break the connecting pin in the shifter.
dealers will inspect for proper operation of the system. Any vehicles that are not functional after the inspection will have the shift mechanism and cable replaced with a "self-adjusting" design.
owner notification began october 26, 1998. Owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact chrysler at 1-800-992-1997.Also contact the national highway traffic safety administration's auto safety hotline at 1-888-dash-2-dot (1-888-327-4236).

  • Recall 2004003 [Canada]: Other
On certain vehicles equipped with an automatic transmission and a floor-mounted shifter, the ignition-park interlock may become defeated and allow the shifter to be moved out of the park position with the key removed. An inoperative interlock may also allow the key to be removed when the shifter has not been placed in the park position. This may result in the vehicle rolling away without warning. Correction: dealer will inspect the function of the ignition-park interlock system. Vehicles found with functional interlock systems will have a load-limiting push rod installed into the floor shifter lever. Vehicles with a non-functional ignition-park interlock system will have the shifter assembly replaced.

  • Recall 1999009 [Canada]: Emissions
On certain vehicles, incorrect weld wire, in combination with the stainless steel shell of the catalytic converter, will cause rusting at the weld joints and premature failure to the converter assembly. Correction: dealers will replace the catalytic converter.

  • Recall 1999170 [Canada]: Brakes
On certain vehicles, the right rear brake tube may contact the exhaust system clamp causing wear. If this happens, the brake tube could develop a leak, reducing the effectiveness of one half of the diagonally split braking system. This could result in longer stopping distances and a possible crash without prior warning. Correction: brake tubes will be inspected for evidence of contact with the exhaust clamp and replaced if necessary. If no evidence of contact exists, the tube will be secured with a clip.

  • Recall 1998165 [Canada]: Other
Note: vehicles equipped with a floor mounted automatic transmission shift lever. A combination of applying a mis-adjusted shifter release button with a low force attempt to shift out of park with the key in the locked position may break the connecting pin in the shifter. If this happens, the "ignition-park" interlock system will not function. Correction: the console shift interlock mechanism will be inspected for proper function. Any vehicles that are not functional after the inspection will have the shift mechanism and cable replaced with a current production "self adjusting" design.

Known Recall Investigations
  • Auto trans ignition-park interlock investigation as of 20030717

The manufacturer reports above are based on daimlerchrysler¿s (dc) analysis of model year (my) 1998 (population = 356,384) and 1999 (population = 486,948) ja, jx and lh family subject vehicle data (earlier mys excluded). The population number includes all mys.The precise number of duplicates between odi and dc reports cannot be determined due to missing or incomplete information. The fatality incident involved an elderly person who attempted to stop a roll away vehicle and received fatal injuries.Odi also gathered information on my 1997-99 prowler vehicles in this investigation. The prowler vehicles were manufactured with a different design shifter mechanism (the shift lever is shorter). There are no complaints of prowler interlock failure in odi¿s database, and dc has received no reports either. The prowler is excluded from the recall scope. The investigation involved a condition where the interlock system could fail (or be made inoperative by the operator) during vehicle use, possibly inadvertently. The interlock system is required under fmvss 114.With the transmission in the park position and the ignition key off, the combined action of pressing the shift button and pulling the shift lever rearward may result in the operator overcoming the interlock system and cause the mechanical linkage of the system to disconnect. When this occurs, there is no overt indication to an operator that the system is defeated, and an increased risk of vehicle roll-away exists.Under recall 04v021, dc will replace damaged shift mechanisms, and will install on all vehicles a device which inhibits the operator¿s ability to overcome the interlock and defeat the system.Beginning with my 2000, dc incorporated a brake and transmission shifter interlock (btsi) system into the subject vehicles.Introduction of btsi involved design changes to the shift mechanism, one of which resulted in reduced mechanical advantage (rma) of the shift button. The rma shifter requires increased forces to overcome the interlock system, making the shifter less susceptible to damage.

  • Safety belt cinching latch plate investigation as of 20021106

There are no injuries or fatalities associated with this alleged defect. While conducting this investigation, odi found that the subject cinches meet the load bearing requirements of federal motor vehicle safety standard 208, and that many of the reported failures were due to incorrect child safety seat installations. Additionally, the report rate is low (1.60/100k).The information available fails to establish the existence of a defect trend at this time.Further allocation of agency resources to this issue is unwarranted and the preliminary evaluation is being closed.

I started the car, placed my foot on the brake and it went to the floor. I exited the vehicle and found a large pool of fluid on the right front of the car. Abs and brake light came on. Master cylinder was near empty. I had the car towed to my local mechanic and he found that all the brake lines (6?) were leaking at the abs pump. This is the car my wife drives. My wife! I am anal with regard to my vehicles condition and maintenance. To have a failure like this on a what is supposed to be a "quality american made vehicle" is absurd and totally unacceptable! My brothers 1999 honda, my step son's 1991 nissan stanza (recently sold) a 1993 geo prizm (i.E. Toyota corolla!!!) recently sold had zero rust on any brake fitting, brake line or fuel line. I had no brake issues previously. *kb

The oil was changed every 3000-5000 miles, more often that suggested by the owners manual. The owners manual states to change it every 7500 miles or 6 months which every comes first. Most of the repair places that i spoke to said that this engine should have been recalled due to this failure. *tr

Well i have had to replace my oil pressure sensor about 6 times already, it seems like i replace it ever 6 months or so, it has been leaking out of the electrical end of the sensor but never leaks out of the threaded end that goes into the block, it almost caused me to blow up my motor that last time it happened, it is just becoming a huge hassle there has to be some defect in the part, because it doesn't matter which parts store i go too they all end up leaking. *tr

I am filing this complaint to have on record this incident and seeking questions already posed to daimler chrysler. I informed daimler chrysler by email, that my 1998 dodge stratus caught on fire with my daughter. On may 23, 07 on peoples court a 1997 dodge stratus was burnt to a crisp because of the power steering hose. A porter hill @ 248-944-7134, from daimler chrysler contacted me regarding the date that this incident took place and the location of the vehicle. That they would be coming to see the vehicle. I just received a letter today from daimler chrysler customer claims resolution group with no signatures reading that they have completed their investigations into the incident and they have denied the claim. That further inquiries be directed to the insurance company. I had inquired to know from chrysler if they had other reported incidents with power steering hoses causing fires to this type of vehicle and whether this vehicle had any recalls. Yet, no one has answered this question. *tr

I picked up my car friday evening aug 13. After parking my car (placing the shift in the park position with the hand brake on) i was unable to remove the key from the ignition. I drove back to herbee motors and saw your manager charlie who assisted me. At first he was unable to remove the key with the car shift in the parked position. Then after numerous attempts he was able to remove the key and advised me to bring the car back on monday for service. I started my car and shut it off and was able to remove the key with no effort (like normal) but the dash parking light and odometer light were still on. The key would not turn all the way to the parked position but was able to be removed. I saw charlie who verified that the key was easily removed but not going into the locked park position. The problem of key removal appears to be intermittent. After attempts, again he was able to remove the key in the proper position. He thought the hand brake had something to do with the key removal and advised not to use the hand brake. This afternoon after returning from shopping i parked my car on my driveway and thought i had placed the floor shift into the parked position and removed the key easily. I got out of the car but the shift was in the reverse position and my car rolled down my driveway into the street. The car could have killed someone or cause serious property damage very easily. "the famous head gasket failure that nobody wants to touch". Yes, i have a 98 dodge stratus that is leaking at the head gasket. I had to buy one of those flat pans to catch the oil in while the car is parked in the garage. My 2 year old got out there the other day and decided to play in the used oil. Is this not a safety issue? Having to keep a pan of dirty oil under a car? I drain it once a week and get at least 1 quart. (and have to pay to dispose of it) come on here! So, on top of the fire hazard (hot oil on a hot catalyst), now we have poisoning issues with our children. Is anybody going to help us, or should we just start the whole class action lawsuit? Impressed with the sporty style of my sister's 4-door dodge stratus, i purchased one for my wife in 1998 (a 1998 dodge stratus). It wasn't long before my sister began having problems with her car. I blamed her and told her that she was too rough on her car (she has a lead foot). My wife and i take very good care of our cars and i was confident we would not run into the same problems. Well, recently i noticed the presence of a small oil-puddle were my wife keeps her car. I learned that the head gasket was in need of replacement. I've yet to have this done but was quoted and estimate of $700-750. The mechanic informed me that this was a very common problem for the stratus. So common that he predicted the diagnosis before ever looking under the hood. My stratus only has 55,000 miles on it. Its been well maintained and driven with care. Turns out, my sister had the same problem (head gasket failure) at/near 65,000 miles. In typing the words "dodge stratus head gasket" in an internet search many articles, complaints, and reviews noted this all-to common problem. I also learned many of those who have had this failure received zero to little compensation/compassion from the manufactuer for the obvious defect. It appaers dodge has identified this problem and has re-designed the gasket multiple times. Two seperate mechanics informed me that i can have the gasket replaced but i should expect the problem to happen again soon after. This doesn't seem fair. I understand defects occur but feel people should be compensated when they do. Dodge needs to stand behind their product and admit they are responsible. This defect has led to much frustration.. A response of what i should/can do would be appreciated

At approx 60,000 miles my 1998 dodge stratus, developed an oil leak at the head gasket, a cracked exhaust manifold, a timing belt tensioner and cover that have failed, a leaking water pump that needs replacing. My mechanic estimates $2150.00 to replace and repair all these items. To top this off my mechanic tells me that it will take 2 to 3 weeks to get the timing belt tensioner and cover because there's a big back order on these items. Meanwhile i'm without a car! By reveiwing the complaints on the web, i see that this vehicle's head gasket was redesigned by chrysler since 1998, also the timing belt tensioner has been redesigned. The car has been great up to this point. However i feel, all these recent problems are clearly pre-mature especially since chrysler has had to redesign the head gasket and tensioner in order to correct the problems with these items. Now the car has been at the shop for two weeks and dodge states the parts are not in production and unavailable until a later unknown date. I have been told that the part is being remanufactured to eliminate the problem, but the new part hasn't been produced yet. There is not a date set for when the part will be available. Dodge obviously knew the part was defective or they would not have improved it for replacement. Why was my safety put at risk for a part they knew was a problem?

Engine headgasket failure. I have a 1998 dodge stratus with a 2.4l and a year ago when i noticed that my engine had a very significant oil leak coming from the head gasket. The car has 75000 miles. I have a 1998 dodge stratus with a 2.4l 4 cylinder engine with 86,000+ miles that has recently developed a head gasket oil leak. I am aware that this is a common problem with this engine and the associated tsb(09-05-98). When i noticed the leak, i took my car to the dealer in town and was told that the regional office denied my request for payment of the repair. I did not have the repair done, but got an estimate for $800. Next, i contacted the chrysler customer service line in detroit, mi.(1-800-992-1997). I was told politely that they would like to help me but that my car was too far out of warranty and that there was no warranty extension for this problem. I asked why some people received assistance for the same problem while others did not, and was told that "this office would not have authorized those payments". I asked for a number or address to make an appeal to this decision and was told that they had already made the final decision, there was no one else to appeal to, and the decision would not be overturned.

Started with an oil leak that required about a quart of oil per tank of gas. This suddenly got much worse, about three weeks ago. Car began to overheat and also had no heat inside. My first thought was a thermostat and i purchased one and went to replace it, only to find the coolant looking like chocolate milk. Seems to be a clear indication of a ruptured head gasket. Engine will still run and there seems to be no structural damage, only that the oils is blowing into the water. With no heat on the inside, i would hope that a heating/coolant system flush will take care of that. Dt

My 1998 dodage stratus leaks oil to the tune of at least 1 qt every other day. I have to keep a case of oil in my trunk to keep up with the leak. And then it still barely registers on the dip stick. I have a large oil stain in the grass of my driveway. I was told the leak was due to a faulty head gasket. It hasn't blown (yet) but it is only a matter of time before the rest of the car falls to pieces. I emailed a complaint to daimlerchrysler and i got a "we are sorry for your dissatisfaction". Massive oil leak from head gasket there is a consistant problem with the 98 (and other years) dodge stratus engines. The head gasket is leaking oil massively. I have a 2.4 liter 4-cylinder dodge stratus that has 49,000 miles on it. It has developed a head gasket leak. I've obtained several estimates ranging from $700-$950 to repair the problem. Daimler chrysler will not issue any type of recall for this car or many other models like the breeze, neon, avenger and cirrus. They are aware of this problem and have been for some time yet they refuse to cover the problem under warranty nor have they attempted to redesign these engines so the head gaskets don't leak. When you put an aluminum head on a cast-iron block, there will be leaks. The two different metals have too many differences in how they react to temperature changes. As long as these metals are paired together (and the unsuspecting public keeps buying this ill-thought-out design) there will be leaks. *jb

At approximatly 49,500 miles on my 1998 dodge stratus i noticed an oil leak while doing an oil change. I kept a watch on this and determined that the head gasket was where the problem was. At this time i did some research on the internet and found out that there were many complaints and service bulletins on the head gasket on this model and engine size. I then contacted the dealer where the vehicle was purchased and they verified that the head gasket was the problem and that it was going to cost me $600.00 or more to have the problem fixed. I then did more research into this and found out that there is an excessivly high incident of the head gasket failing on this model in both the 1997 and 1998 years, and when questioning people in the surrounding area found out that nearly every person that has purchased this model and engine combination have had the same failure and most of them with around 50,000 miles. I do not feel that i should have to pay the full amount to repair something that is a known and commen manufacturer problem ( dodge implemented a new gasket design on the 1999 model year to correct the problem). Also i think that based on the frequency of this failure there should be a full manufacturer recall, this problem also causes a safety concern of the possibility of a fire in the engine compartment due to the severity, and location of the oil leak .*ak

They did $220.00 worth of brake work to the front end of the car. Again in june of 2001 i took the car back to royal chrysler with the same braking problems, they replaced the front rotors again, brake pads, buffed the brake shoes on the back and replaced the front brake pads. Not even a month down the road the car is having braking problems again and i'm just so frustrated i don't know where to turn. I took my car in because i needed to have the brakes repaired as a regular item of repair, secondary to wear and tear. This was early in december 2000. The mechanic also checked over the car and reported that as with many 1998 dodge stratus' i will need to keep an eye on the cylinder head gasket. The mechanic also informed me that i should check with the dealer and see if this item has yet been recalled. I then had no problems for the next few weeks when i was turning around a corner slowly and an awful noise occurred. I then parked the car and when i returned i had a large oil leak on the ground. I scheduled an appointment with my trusted mechanic and they checked it over when they noticed that the head gasket needed replacing, the entire pulley system was seizing up and needed replacing and my manifold needs to be replaced. The cost of this was $1,000 and that was without replacing the manifold, as i could not afford it at that time. I have called the dealership and they reported that they would have to schedule an appointment to look at the car, submit a claim to the regional manager of daimler chrysler and they have been known to help out with approx. $200. Of the repairs. Well since i was in the process of moving to ga from ca and had to stay on schedule i was unable to stay back for the appointment which wasn't until a week later. Upone my request for the name and number of the regional manager of daimler chrysler, they said , i cannot give that information to you. We are the only ones with this information and you must bring to car in for us to inspect. When i asked them if this inpection would cost, they reported, depending upon the tests needed. I knew that financially, even if i was approved for $200 assistance i was better off getting this fixed by a trusted less expensive mechanic and fight the battle later. Clearly a vehicle with 70,000 hwy miles, with oil changes every 3,500 miles should not need a new manifold, a new pulley system and all new gaskets

I requested recall inspection for transmission power train on 6-19-2000. While looking for info on my dodge stratus 9 8 on your website i accessed recalls and noticed that their were two for this car. One was for brake recall and i was notified by huntsville dodge and took the car in for the inspection the other recall was for power train transmission problem the recall date was owner notification oct 1998 i purchased this car in dec 98 and according to the info at that time this car was on there lot at the time of recall notification. I took the recall info to dealer and asked if that recall inspection was done while the car was in there possession and on there lot before it was sold to me in dec 98. They looked it up i guess by vin and told me no it was not i asked them to do it while they had it there. They said they would and did. My question and possible complaint to you is should not they have been required to do the recall inspection while in there possession at the car lot before being allowed to sell the car. Thank you.*ak

On saturday june 17, 2000 while traveling in lewisburg tn , it started raining heavily. Had ran the air conditioner earlier in the day but after some showers it had cooled things down and just had on the air vents. After encountering heavy rain turned the defroster on to clear foggy windows and heard a howling grinding noise from under the hood. Immediately pulled off the road after turning the defroster off. Tried it again and same noise and also tried to turn on air conditioner with same results and car choked out and quit. So i just turned off the compressor and used vent only to try to get home. I accessed your websit for info regarding stratus. I f ound info on tech serv bulletins about compressor failure at 90+ temps we have had 90+ more than not since may. Contacted the dealer monday morn about problem talked to gen mgr. Mr. Stephens he told me to bring info and car in wed for free inspection of problem. I took the car in and tried to talk to him and serv dept about compressor failure problems. They said they would check out compressor and call me. They confirmed compressor locked up on car and offered to fix the car for 700.00 instead of reg price of 940.00 since the car was out of warranty at 36,000 miles thats the best they would do. I argued according to info i had f ound and brought to there attention i thought the problem was a defected compressor and they shoud fix at no cost. They said no. I went and picked up car and f ound certified a/c tech car repair place to do the work for much less. When checking around for estimates one auto repair shop told me i was the 5 inquiry about failed a/c compressor on 98 stratus. I feel that this is a mfg defect and poses a safety problem when it locks up going down street or hwy because it chokes out the engine and could cause an accident and injury esp considering the mileage on car i have f ollowed all reasonable maint guildlines and in my opinon this compressor should have lasted longe

This car has been a major problem. Head gasket failed at approx 11,000 on my way to airport to pick up family on april 10, 1999. Couldn't get it in for service until april 14, 1999. Transmission clutch started catching or scraping on something shortly after head gasket was replaced, i was told when work was completed (replaced cables on 11/18/1999) that problem was manufacturer defect mileage was 18,373. Was again experiencing same problem with clutch on 2/29/2000. Upon speaking with service team, was told there was a bad bearing in the transmission and they would be replacing both the cables and transmission parts; i also asked for them to check the engine light , because it was coming on and had a strong smell of gasoline; vaccum system was replaced. On 3/24/2000 internal parts of transmission were replaced at 22,349 mi. On 06/05/2000 engine stalled and was difficult to restart, engine was running really rough, replaced mapping computer @25,008 mi. Came home from work on 8/23/2000 strong odor of gasoline. Opened hood and watched gas leaking all over exhaust manifold. Had it towed to dealership on 8/24/2000 w/ 29,539 mi. Replaced cracked fuel injectors and leaking hoses. The car is now in again because of yet the same transmission/clutch problem previously complained about. Think . . . I'm driving down i 95 with my family in my car. Transmission fails, big truck runs the car over . . . Does chrysler want that headache?

I have a 1998 dodge stratus and like many others the head gasket needs replacing. I was told about this in july 2002. I was told by service that this was a known problem and that chrysler would participate in the expense of the repair and it would only cost me $200. At the time i could not afford the repair. Also, the leak was not that bad. I was led to believe that the $200 would be the cost when i had the repair work done. When i called to make the appointment jan 20, 2003 because the leak was starting to get worse, i asked the service person if this $200 cost was still in effect. He said he checked on it and was told it was. After i dropped off the car, i got a call later in the morning telling me it would cost me full price. My issue is that since this is a known problem on the 98 stratus why hasn't chrysler (dodge) been made to issue a recall. The realized the problem with the head gasket because they changed the headgasket part approximately nov 1998 in production and replacements.

We have conctaced several car seat manufacturers (fisher price and even-flo) and they do not recommend using convertible car seats in the rear position with automatic emergency locking device seat belts which is in my dodge stratus. We contacted chrysler and they told us there was nothing they could do to solve the problem. I think it is very important to inform the public that to my knowledge there is not a safe child seat made that will work in the rear position in a car with a automatic emergency locking device. This i assume includes all or most chrysler vehicles. We informed them that there are thousands if not millions of parents traveling around the daily with cars that are not capable of being used with rear facing child seats. They need to address this issue. It is disappointing that a car maker could even produce a product with sure disregard for child safety.

I was in a car accident on feb. 16 1998/1999??. And my car was almost totalled. The collision repair shop was supposed to replace all of the bad parts totalling somewhere a little over 9,000$ . Every time i would go to pick up my car there was something wrong with it. Finally after like 5 trips to the repair shop i took it home. A while later i had taken it in to be worked on the side the damage was done to it. The chrysler dealership told me they would not touch it because it was a hazardous situation and the car shouldn't even be on the road. Well come to find out the damage was never replaced but buffed and coated with bondo. The collision shop ended up paying for it to get fixed but state farm said he was guilty of insurance fraud and i would like this investigated. If he has done it to me how many other people has he done it to. Not to mention the fact that everyone including my 7 year old nephew, was in danger every time we would get in my car.
