  • Recall 113868 [USA]: Inadvertent deployment of the air bags may increase the risk of injury and the possibility of a vehicle crash.
Chrysler (fca us llc) is recalling certain model year 2002-2003 jeep liberty vehicles manufactured january 9, 2001, to march 28, 2003, 2002-2004 jeep grand cherokee vehicles manufactured february 13, 2001, to may 23 2003, and 2003-2004 dodge viper vehicles manufactured november 1, 2001, to june 30, 2004. Due to electrical noise beyond the tolerance of the air bag electronic control module (ecm), a component in the ecm may fail, causing the front air bags, side air bags, and/or seatbelt pretensioners to deploy inadvertently while the vehicle is being operated.
chrysler dealers will replace the air bag control module and side impact sensors as required, free of charge. This recall remedy was applied during earlier recall campaigns of these vehicles under safety recalls 12v527 and 13v040. All owners that have not had the recall repair performed under safety recalls 12v527 or 13v040 are strongly encouraged to have it performed and not wait for the final remedy to be deployed to the field. • Recall 2015040 [Canada]: Airbag
On certain vehicles, a defect in the supplemental restraint system (srs) could result in an inadvertent deployment of the front airbag, side curtain airbag and/or seatbelt pretensioner. Unintended seatbelt pretensioner and/or airbag deployment, in a non-warranted (non-impact) situation, could startle the driver, which could result in a vehicle crash causing property damage and/or personal injury. In some instances, inadvertent deployment could cause minor injuries to vehicle occupants. Correction: dealers will replace the srs control unit and may install an in-line jumper wiring harness to correct the issue. Note: this recall supersedes recalls 2012378 and 2013046. Vehicles that were repaired under the previous campaign will also need to be repaired under this campaign.

  • Recall 2013046 [Canada]: Airbag
On certain vehicles, a defect in the supplemental restraint system could result in an inadvertent deployment of the front airbag, side curtain airbag and/or seatbelt pretensioner. Correction: dealers will install an in-line jumper wiring harness to correct the issue.

  • Recall 2003195 [Canada]: Fuel supply
On certain vehicles, the fuel pump wiring could become chafed by an underbody heat shield metal edge. This could cause the fuel pump fuse to open and result in an engine-stall condition. Correction: dealer will install a protective welt to the edge of the heat shield and a braided sleeve over the wiring harness.

  • Recall 2003244 [Canada]: Electrical
On certain vehicles, the multifunction switch park lamp contacts may corrode over time, increasing the resistance in the low current circuit. The increase in resistance may cause erroneous communication with the bcm (body control module), possibly causing the park lamps, head lamps, and/or instrument panel lamps to flicker or become inoperative. Correction: dealer will reprogram the bcm.

Known Recall Investigations
  • Rear suspension knuckle fracture investigation as of 20130426

Odi opened pe13-010 on april 26, 2013, to investigate two complaints alleging loss of control crashes caused by rear suspension knuckle failure in model year (my) 2005 and 2006 dodge viper vehicles. The incidents described in the complaints occurred in november and december 2012.Chryslers response to odis information request (ir) letter for pe13-010 indicates that the left and right rear knuckles used in my 2005 and 2006 dodge viper vehicles were used in my 2003 through 2010 dodge viper srt-10 vehicles and in all dodge viper competition coupe and acrx race cars (see figure 1 of attachment to this resume for a view of the rear suspension in the subject vehicles).Chryslers response included information about 8 reports related to rear knuckle failures, including the 2 incidents identified by odi in the opening resume for pe13-010.In addition, after pe13-010 was opened, odi received 2 additional complaints resulting in a total of 10 incidents of rear knuckle failure in my 2003 through 2010 viper vehicles, including 8 alleging crashes.Based on its review of physical evidence from field inspections of 6 of the 8 incident vehicles identified in its response, including the two incidents that were the basis for odi opening pe13-010 (voqs 10492180 and 10492169/10491122), chrysler concluded that collision forces were the causal factor of rear suspension control knuckle failure.Chryslers assessment was primarily based on examination of knuckle fracture surfaces, as well as evidence of wheel rim damage that would indicate impact loading of the affected suspension components. Each of the fracture surfaces examined by chrysler displayed clean, granular fracture surfaces indicative of single event, overload failure.None of the parts showed any indication of fatigue crack growth. In addition to the 6 vehicles inspected by chrysler, odi obtained a fractured knuckle from a recent incident involving a my 2004 viper (voq 10510248).Nhtsas vehicle research and testing center in ohio submitted this part to a laboratory for fracture surface and metallurgical analysis. The analysis concluded that there was no evidence of fatigue in the part and that the fracture was due to a single overload event (see figures 2-4 in attachment to this resume).Analysis of the fracture surfaces found evidence of a mix of load states, with some failures associated with rear toe links in tension (figures 2-4) and some in compression (figures 5-6).Seven of the 8 incidents in which the side of the knuckle failure was identified involved right knuckles, the side that is generally most common for impact failures involving wheel and suspension components. The single, left side failure was associated with an incident involving an impact with a concrete barrier dividing highway travel lanes.Analysis of the failure data indicated these are random events and do not show any clear patterns related to vehicle build range, vehicle age or mileage.Examination and testing of failed knuckles have not identified evidence of a manufacturing or design defect in the parts.Accordingly, this investigation is closed. The closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by nhtsa that a safety-related defect does not exist. The agency will continue to monitor complaints and other information relating to the alleged defect in the subject vehicles and take further action in the future if warranted.Voqs associated with this investigation: 10523321, 10510248, 10492180, 10492169 (duplicate to 10491122).

It is known fact that all dodge vipers built between 2003-2010 have power window regulators that fail on a regular basis. The plastic tubing breaks and the windows will no longer move. This is a serious safety concern on multiple fronts where a need could arise to escape the car through the window. If the regulator has failed, and the window is in the "up" position, there additional hazards. Because the regulator is designed to slightly lower the window when closing the door, if it stops functioning, the closing of the vehicle doors creates stress on the glass. There are numerous accounts of windows breaking while a vehicle is simply parked and still others where the window finally give way to the stresses of the extra pressure and explode while driving. This causes flying glass to hit the occupants causing cuts and possible blindness, and could also lead the driver to lose control of the vehicle causing serious injury or death. Replacement regulators are not only hard to find, but are $1,000 each. Dodge has knows about this issue (and known since 2003 when problems began), but refuses to address the problem. Please see the numerous accounts on viper club of america's website or viper alley. Apparently the design has finally been fixed for the 2013 viper, but is unclear whether this regulator can retrofitted to 2003-10 cars. With this being a known (and admitted to issue) by dodge, an immediate safety recall should be issued by dodge to correct this problems at no charge to current owners. If dodge continues to bury it's head in the sand about this, they are just awaiting a lawsuit for wrongful death caused by their negligence, which will carry a huge price tag. *tr
