Automatic emergency braking errors investigation # PE23010
The office of defects investigation (odi) has received 18 vehicle owner questionnaires (voqs) which allege errors in the automatic emergency braking (aeb) system on 2017 - 2022 freightliner cascadia trucks produced by daimler truck north america (dtna). Drivers report activation of the aeb without an actual roadway obstacle, also known as a false positive event. The reports indicate the subject vehicle will apply the service brakes without warning or input from the driver. The applications range from momentary, partial application with little loss of speed to full application, which brings the vehicle to a complete stop in the travel lane. The national highway traffic safety administrations (nhtsa) vehicle research and test center (vrtc) tested a freightliner cascadia aeb-equipped vehicle. During the "steel trench plate" scenario, the vehicle initiated hard braking when the plate was detected.Dtna stated that the steel trench plate was not representative of real-world driving. This preliminary evaluation has been opened to evaluate the issue and determine whether the alleged defect creates an unreasonable risk to safety. The odi reports cited above can be viewed at www-odi.Nhtsa.Dot.Gov/owners/search nhtsa id under the following identification numbers (odi #):11091048, 11165950, 11165951, 11210401, 11271439, 11323299, 11326113, 11408007, 11435928, 11444204, 11445705, 11451612, 11464954, 11474018, 11479098, 11485349, 11485792, and 10926597
