If the trailer hitch should become unlatched while the vehicle is in motion, or if an accident were to occur and cause the safety chain to impose forces on the safety chain bale, the bail could fail and result in complete separation of the truck and trailer. This would cause loss of directional control and the trailer until the emergency braking system could bring it to a stop.
