Ambulance alternator failures investigation # EA04001
Odi investigated this problem when notified of multiple alternator fanfailures by a western ambulance fleet that travelled long distances during their calls. Odis concern was that when an alternator fandisentegrated,it would result in a disabled ambulance, which placed the passengers at an increased risk, since timely medical assistance would be delayed. Odi, working with horton and leece-neville, (the alternator mfr) found that the fans cooling blades were not designed to withstand the rpms inherent to the operating conditions of this application.Horton is working with the alternator manufacturer prestolite (leece-neville) to modifiy the alternator setup to be more robust. The vehicles of concern are equipped with a 454 cu in gasoline engine (gm chassis) and are built with alternators which were designed for diesel engines, which have a lower rpm operating range.Horton, with leece-neville assistnace, will be providing the correct altenators, appropriate for this application, to ambulance owners.Hortons safety recall satisfies odis concerns. Therefore this investigation is closed.
Alternator failures investigation # PE03028
This investigation was opened based on reports of alternator failures occurring on ambulances.Originally the failures were thought to occur when the alternator case bolt would fracture and back out into the fan.Information developed during the pe indicates that some fans are simply failing on their own.Discussions with the alternator manufacturer indicate that the alternators involved were designed for a diesel powered application. All known failures have occured on gas powered applications. The subject vehicles are all gas powered vehicles equipped with the subject alternators. Each subject vehicle has experienced at least one failure and some have experienced multiple failures. The office has communicated with the alternator manufacturer in an effort to determine an appropriate alternator for the gas engine application.Odi will be focusing on the appropriate alternator to be utilized on ambulances.Odi is concerned about failing alternators on ambulances because the vehicles become disabled and therefore the safey of patients being transported or awaiting the arrival of the ambulance may be impacted.
