• Recall 9378 [USA]: The reduced strength can allow the cast iron wear surface to separate from the hub, reducing the brake effectiveness of the vehicle.
  Vehicle description: passenger and multi-purpose vehicles originally sold or currently registered in the states of connecticut, illinois, indiana, maine, maryland, massachusetts, michigan, new hampshire, new jersey, new york, ohio, pennsylvania, rhode island, vermont, or wisconsin, and the district of columbia. The front disc brake rotors can experience severe corrosion if operated for an extensive period in the "salt belt." if the rotors are not replaced, the corrosion can eventually compromise the structural integrity of the stamped steel center hub section of the rotor.

• Recall 12660 [USA]: Pedal misapplication by a driver can cause unintended acceleration.
  Vehicle description: multipurpose passenger vehicles equipped with automatic transmissions. This is not a safety recall in accordance with federal regulation 573. However, it is deemed a safety improvement campaign by the agency. Drivers can mistakenly step on the accelerator pedal when they intend to step on the brake pedal.

  Note: vehicles equipped with 4.0 litre engines. These vehicles may not comply with c.M.V.S.S. 301 - fuel system integrity. Rollover testing revealed fuel leakage in excess of the standard. During an accident the seat belt equipment on the 1992 jeep cherokee malfunctioned.*mr the driver's side and passenger's side seat belts did not lock on impact. The occupants sustained facial and head injuries as a result. *nm

I was driving on the interstate. The speed limit was 65. When i got to 60 i noticed my suv began to shake. Hitting a bump most of the time starts the problem. It vibrated so much and so loudly that i had to slow down to 55. I took it to the first mechanic who said it was the "steering stabilizer" it did cost about $150-$300 to fix. I can't remember exactly but it wasn't cheap. It worked for awhile. I have gone to several other car service companies and they have not been able to permanently fix this problem. I'm afraid i will lose control of steering. Although there is no recall on this vehicle at the moment it should be. This is a serious safety problem. I'm not exactly sure when this started but if i go over 60 there is a 90% chance of it happening. If i go over 60 and hit a bump there is a 100% chance of this happening.

After starting the vehicle, the abs light would illuminate and would stay on the reminder of the time the vehicle is being operated. The consumer is not having any other problems with the abs at this time. The dealership was notified, but did not resolve the problem. Please provide any additional information. *nlm

Dear sir/madam: i would like to bring to your attention matters related to a certain safety defect which i believe resulted in car crashes caused by the unintended acceleration of daimler/chrysler's, chrysler group vehicles. Daimler/chrysler is my former employer and i worked there as an engineer. During my tenure there, i worked closely with the group that now has as its members, the corporations expert witness defending the corporation in law suits related to these crashes. This same group was also responsible for developing and releasing the controls which are believed to be the root cause of the problem. At one point in time i was part of the team at dailmer/chrysler that was responsible for investigating customer complaints regarding crashes caused by unintended acceleration. Accordingly, i believe that i may be able to provide some very good if not exclusive inside information related to this matter. I believe that these car crashes are the result of dailmer/chryslers flagrant negligence in developing the systems that are believed to be the root cause of these crashes. If my assistance in investigating this matter would be of interest to you, please let me know. I am willing to help in whatever capacity i can. It is wrong that dailmer/chrysler built and sold vehicles which may hurt if not kill someone. Regardless of your disposition of this matter, if possible, i would greatly appreciate a reply on or before december 18, 2003 outlining you intended course of action to my concern. Vehicle experienced fuel leak and problems with front rotors.*mr after having paid for repairs on his car, the consumer was never made aware of a recall on his vehicle regarding the rotors.*cb also water leaked onto the floor. *jb

My car has been steadily losing oil for the last month and i after i came back from lunch at work one day, which was less than a mile from my work, i noticed that my car was smoking so i pulled over and waited for a half an hour then went directly to the gas station where he told me i needed to have the exhaust manifold repaired, i took it to my mechanic and he advised me that the exhaust manifold was cracked and if he took it apart it would end up costing more than the car was worth. Since we just paid the car off, i was hoping the dealer would replace the cracked manifold. It has been steadily losing oil and i have to put oil in almost every other week now, which is expensive. This has never been a problem until recently. Also at times the neutral safety switch does not work as there have been instances where my car will not start and when i put the car in neutral it will start. *la

While towing a boat vehicle caught on fire. Dealer notified. *ak

Consumer states her jeep vibrates while driving, and when she makes a turn it really vibrates. She says she has taken it to four dealers and they cannot find anything wrong with the truck. *nlm

While traveling at about 20 to 25 mph brakes failed, consumer's foot went to the floor when pressing brake pedal. Consumer was able to roll vehicle safely to a stop. Please provide any further information.*ak

Started vehicle, moved from park to drive and car accelerated to an extremely high speed and smashed into the car in front of it, causing that car to be "totaled" and over $2,000 damage to the jeep. When this happened, the driver's foot was not even on the gas pedal!*ak

When putting gear into reverse from park vehicle suddenly accelerated backwards, causing it to crash into a parked vehicle.*ak

Whenever consumer drives over a bump at speeds of 55 mph and above, right front wheel wobbles badly from side to side. Vehicle taken to 6 different mechanics for a total of 9 times, could not find cause. *ak *slc

It would take longer to stop vehicle when applying brakes. Consumer took vehicle to dealer, and dealer replaced rotors. Consumer experienced the same problem as indicated in recall on corrosion of brake rotors. Dealer will replace rotors. *ak

Vehicle caught on fire while it was it was parked inside the garage. Consumer heard a popping noise coming from the garage, and the jeep was on fire underneath the hood, near the engine. *ak

Bendix buckle part #2cm328461 buckle acts like it is okay at first shake. It comes undone or as time goes on it finally does not work at all. It's that period of time when you think you are safe and if you had a crash you would be at risk. *ak

I feel that this is a safety issue-if the welds break, which they have and chrysler has issued a tsb #23-04-96 which covers 4 yes 4 years they should pay for the repair - and repair all of these doors. What are they wating for - a door to fall off. *ak

When applying the brakes the vehicle pulls to the left because the front right rotor completely separated from the hub. Rotor and hub joint failed because of corrosion. Both rotors need to be replaced. *ak *ml

Vehicle experienced sudden acceleration resulting in accident and injury to consumer.

When driving at any speed and applying brakes, the brakes are hard and the abs system locks up, causing the consumer to have no brakes. Consumer has to dodge other vehicles in order not to have an accident due to the fact that the brakes don't stop the vehicle. *ak

While driving at 45 mph, during routine braking operation, the front brake rotors separated from the center hub. Dirver lost control of vehicle but was able to avoid a crash. The dealer is aware of the problem. Problem repaired at owner's expense. *ak

I have moved since purchasing my jeep. I was traveling on the road when all of a sudden my breaks did not work. I crashed to a stop but by the grace of god i was not traveling at a high speed. I only bumped my head. I had to have the car towed to crest auto world in n. Conway, nh. They said that the front break rotors seperated from the center hub. He gave me a copy of a recall notice showing that the year 90-91 & 93 for my car had a recall for this exact problem. When i called crysler, they said that they would not do anything to help me with this. If they found this exact problem with those years, why did they skip 92?? Since this is the exact problem, i think that people should be warned so that nobody dies because of this.

Tl* the contact owns a 1992 jeep cherokee. The contact stated that the vin was included in nhtsa campaign number: 98v005000 (service brakes, hydraulic). The contact called mopar and the chrysler manufacturer; both confirmed that the parts were not available for the recall remedy. The contact was advised by mopar to have the recall repaired 21 years ago by an independent mechanic. The contact stated that the vehicle would not pass inspection until the recall was repaired. The contact had not experienced a failure.

Vehicle rolled over onto the side because of faulty brakes. Driver depressed the brake pedal when approaching a stop sign at 35mph, and the brake pedal would not go down to the floor. The brake pedal was very stiff. The road was flat with a little up grade, it wasn't a hill. The vehicle rolled across the intersection at full speed while the driver blew the horn to inform the other drivers that the vehicle could not be stopped. *ak

Vehicle was parked for approx. 8 hours. Main engine computer spontaneously began to emit smoke and burn. Fire went out when battery was disconnected.

While driving 55mph the wheel came flying off and the lugs: nuts came off also. Regained tire; the wheel was torn where all the lugs: nuts were located. There was no sign of the wheel coming off. *ak

Thrermostat/radiator/water pump/rear main seal/head gasket/valve cover gasket/engine oil pan gasket/oil filter adapter ring. Failed. Also replaced transmission/temperature gauge and plug wires. *ak

Brakes:safety campaign #97i-002.Vehicle parked in garage,backed out of garage, put in gear. Vehicle took off at a high speed and ran into house. *ak

Consumer's parents were driving on familiar road when they reached the stop sign. With friends trailing from behind, they never stopped, instead vehicle proceeded across road head-on into barriers, killing both driver and passenger instantly. The gas pedal was locked down to floor and bent inward towards brake pedal. *ak

The front disc brake rotors rusted out, causing brake loss, it is part of the hub cup that rusted out. The brake rotors rusted within 5 years. Did not take vehicle to dealer. *ak

The hydraulic cylinders that support the rear liftgate failed. The liftgate does not stay in the open position. The vehicle has not been looked at by a dealer. *ak

Failure of the steering gear assembly, the steering gear is bad, causing loss of power assist. *ak

Backing out of driveway; put car in park; stepped out for jacket; car started backwards; door hit driver; was bent on guardrail; driver tried stop car; shifter would not stay in park position; finally jumped in car & stopped. *ak

Speedometer inoperative.

After applying brakes & lifted foot off pedal, brakes fail to disengage. Taken to dealer & master cylinder & booster were replaced. Problem reappeared again with brakes. Took back to dealer & brake light switch was replaced & brakes locked up.*ak

Brake calipers locked up, resulting in total loss of front braking system.*ak

Driving vehicle home, a cloud of smoke appeared in the rear of vehicle, another driver noticed dripping oil, no steering/engine/transmission power. *ak

Glove compartment light switch melted.

Rear hatchback hydraulic cylinder broke, causing injuries when open. Tt consumer states rear door very heavy to close at times, after accident consumer took vehicle to dealer and they stated all the doors are like that, even the temperature affects them and there was nothing wrong with cylinders, when consumer closed the door, it apparently did not catch and flew back and injured consumer vehicle was parked.*jb

Clutch line broke while driving. Tt consumer states he was on a climbing grade on the highway towing boat in 3rd gear, at top of grade pushed clutch to shift to 4th gear, clutch pedal had no pressure and did not release clutch, consumer stopped and checked under vehcile found bubble on clutch line with a hole in it, hole was jsut above where line is clamped to bell housing, consumer still has the line, consumer had dealer write up as a brake line, consumer states it was the clutch and that was repaired.*jb

The handle of the emergency brake will not stay in the locked position. My mother also has the same problem with her jeep cherokee. I've never seen a brake handle go bad before, and since it also happened on my mothers jeep, it indicates a manufacturer's defect. *ak

Corrosion of the front brake rotors not covered under recall due to vin.

Sudden unintended acceleration (ua) - turning right in service station; accelerator went all the way to floor. Almost no brakes. Barely missed gas pumps and gas delivery tanker. Got on straightaway and turned off ignition, stopping with aid of parking brake. Jeep service dept. Reported nothing wrong with vehicle --"must have been caused by floor mat". The problem is obviously in the cruise control as it is the only device that can pull the accelerator cable to wide open throttle. Have disconnected the cruise control and would advise all cherokee owners to do the same. *ak

My 1992 jeep cherokee has jumped from park to reverse on two occasions this year. On the first occasion, the car smashed into my back steps causing about $500 damage to the steps and $1250 damage to the vehicle. I had been in the car and exited to retrieve something from the garage. The car was idling in the driveway when suddenly it started moving backwards toward the house. When i shut the car off, i found the car was in reverse, not park. I would never have been able to exit the car if it had been in gear, so i knew that something was amiss with the car. Later in february, the same thing happened again, but this time i was in the vehicle when it happened and i was therefore able to step on the brake to stope the car. *ak

Right front brake caliper sticks slightly, causing overheating of right front brake. Also front suspension failure.

Owner states that his vehicle takes off at high speeds without warning. Owner notes that tachometer revolutions increased, causing vehicle to speed. Owner had to turn igntion off to stop vehicle. Dealers could not find anything wrong. *ak

Ignition broke and vehicle can start without a key, and steering wheel will not lock. *ak

When shifting vehicle into drive it unexpectedly accelerated, causing loss of control which resulted in damages to garage. *ak one person was injured in the accident. *yh

Lock on transmission to keep vehicle from jumping into gear. Recall 733 was repaired by another part and chrysler does not want to pay the bill.

While backing out from a parking lot vehicle suddenly accelerated. Consumer applied the brakes, and the pedal went to the floor. Consumer was able to turn off the vehicle. The driver tried to restart, and was able to start the vehicle. The driver was able to take the vehicle to the dealer for inspection. *ak

Engine oil leakage.

On three different occasions brakes failed to lock up while applying very hard pressure.

Rear brakes do not work. Chrysler suggested a $450 fix that will allow more pressure to be applied to the rear brake cylinders.

Rear right taillight not connected. Nlm

Severe oscillation of the front suspension occurs occasionally on rough roads or upon hittin a small bump, consumer is unable to control by braking or steering but can be controlled by bringing vehicle to a near stop. *et
