Known Recall Investigations
  • Engine stall after refueling investigation as of 20170329

Nhtsas office of defects investigation (odi) evaluated this petition by 1) reviewing the vehicle owner questionnaire (voq) reports (i.E., complaints) submitted to the agency, 2) reviewing the manufacturers response to an information request letter the agency produced, and 3) reviewing the investigative files for two prior agency actions, specifically pe13-016 and dp14-002, both of which involved the same alleged defect condition and both of which were closed without a defect finding.Consistent with prior evaluations, odi has determined that further investigation is unlikely to result in a finding that a defect related to motor vehicle safety exists given the conditions under which these stalls occur.Additionally, and as indicated by the failure report counts shown above, there have been no relevant crashes, injuries or fatalities identified by either odi or the manufacturer despite the fairly significant service life of the subject vehicles. In view of the need to allocate and prioritize nhtsas limited resources to best accomplish the agencys safety mission, odi is denying petition.A detailed summary of odis analysis of this petition is available in the investigative file for this action, and will be published in the federal register also. The 39 voq reports cited above can be reviewed at nhtsa.Gov under the following reference (odi) numbers:10520767, 10582092, 10630009, 10632390, 10655183, 10661543, 10669824, 10679771, 10700955, 10714106, 10721350, 10721565, 10726070, 10749804, 10776405, 10777810,10783139, 10790325, 10794850, 10817500, 10818793, 10822168, 10823089, 10823234,10826088, 10836787, 10837871, 10846388, 10850984, 10851905, 10855663, 10862684,10897450, 10905638, 10914269, 10918942, 10944115, 10944318, 10948386

Filled gasoline up and had car idle while driving. Had to place car in park, turn ignition off and back on to get it to turn back on. This happened two times and happens everytime i fill up gas in car. Other patriots have reported same issue and i have been very close to accidents due to this.

The jeep commonly chokes and dies right after a fill-up. After 30 seconds to a minute, the problem disappears. This has been happening for at least 10 years. Online data search appears to indicate that this is a common problem with jeeps. Having your car die in traffic creates a dangerous situation.

Every time i fill up the car, once a week, i am barely out of the gas station and bam! Car shuts off. Or as i am driving it stalls, sometimes it goes and sometimes it just shuts off. I've cars almost rear end me because it so sudden. Sometimes i just turn on the car after gas just to wait for it to shut down so i don't kill myself in traffic. Took the car to a mechanic paid 800 bucks and it still happens. They replaced the full injector and some other stuff that i don't know. They pulled the gas tank out to do whatever it was. The entire car smelled like gas for weeks. Why can't something be done. Looks like i am not the only one. Every ones complaints matches mine. This has been going on for a year.

Vehicle has had stalling issues following refueling for several years now. Aside from after refueling the stalling is unpredictable as for timing. Sometimes it stalls immediately after refueling and starting the engine, other times it will stall after i'm already in traffic several minutes later. This creates a significant safety hazard.

After filling up with gas twice now it stalls right after i fill up the gas tank. The steering wheel locks and i've been stalled in an intersection that is not safe. I just purchased this used a few weeks ago and was not aware of the problem or i would not have purchased it. It's a fuel tank rollover valve and should have been recalled years ago. The entire fuel tank needs to be replaced which is an expensive job. Should be recalled so people can get it fixed by dealer at the dealer cost. This is not something that happens with normal wear and tear it is a manufactures defect. Why wasn't this recalled years ago.

When i gas up below a quarter of a tank my jeep stalls out and steering locks up completely in the span of a second so i have no time to move over. If i gas up at around a quarter or above it lurches really bad several times for next few minutes then runs fine until gassing up again then repeat. I was almost in an accident the first time this happened now i have to drive fifteen minutes away to gas up and drive the back roads to let it run it's course so if i stall i won't get killed. It it supposedly the valve on top of the gas tank resulting in the whole thing needing to be replaced. This has almost gotten me killed as well as many others who i've seen discussing the issue. Please look into this and get this recalled!

When filling gas tank the car stalls and any time when driving . This is very dangerous when pulling out into traffic, this has happened mant times!!!!!!!!!!!!

NoNoN NoneNone20191203

This has happened twice now in 3 days. After fully filling my fuel tank and then driving away from the pump my jeep patriot stalls before i hit 3/10 of a mile from the gas station. Contrary to some other reports of this issue, that i have read, as well as the explanation of the issue posted on the nhtsa website, from fca, this does not happen only at idle. Rather it happens while i am driving. When my jeep stalls i also lose the ability to fully steer (can only turn the wheel appx 1/4 turn) and braking does not work as well as it normally does. When it happened today i ended up mounting a curb and sidewalk in a residential area. The street i was on was turning but i couldn't turn with it. If i had not engaged the emergency/parking brake i would have driven through a chain link fence and into a home. Once i restarted my jeep and backed off of the curb the engine stalled again while my jeep was in motion. Luckily i was barely moving and already had my hand on the emergency/parking brake. When i restarted my jeep the next time i revved the engine to 3,000rpm for appx 1 minute while my jeep was in park. My jeep did not stall after that for the rest of today. Tomorrow may be another story. I see in this form there is the ability to upload photos but i did not know about this being an existing safety issue or the ability to report it before now. As a result there are no photos of my jeep on a curb about to crash into someone's house. With the number of reports of this issue having already been made to the nhtsa i am shocked that a mandatory safety recall was not demanded.

Every time i fill up with gas the car makes it to the first stop sign and then just dies. I start it up and start to drive it and it dies again. I have to sit in one spot and keep trying to drive hoping it won't die and i will get hit.

Car will stall after filling up gas tank, and there is a loss to all the driving components. No brakes, no steering, no power. Very dangerous. I have taken it to multiple mechanics and they say it is something in the gas tank, and the only way to replace it is to replace it is to buy a new gas tank. There are multiple forums with thousands of people with the same issue. Please issue recall this is not safe.

NoNoN NoneNone20190522

When i fill the gas tank all the way the car will go about 25 feet and start to stall and shutoff locking the steering wheel and i have no control of the car. If i dont fill it up all the way this is not a problem. It appears there are many people having the same issue as seen here. Https://www.Cargurus.Com/cars/discussion-t29898_ds631498

Transmission and axle shaft area makes a whining noise as if gears are failing. The previous owner did not know what was causingthis so i do not know when the pronlem actually started! I have also noticed on newer jeep patriots the year 2015 the rear passenger sides abs/wheel speed sensor goes out as well as wheel bearing failure which started at 30,000 miles. Please fix these problems it seems like thses where not made well for the 44 feature as you display it to be capable of. Please fix these problems! Thank you! My 2007 makes popping noises during right turns the whole undercarriage has been replaced and the problem still exists!

2007 jeep patriot limited 4x4 cvt. Every time the gas tank is filled up, the car stalls, bucks, and/or hesitates. After fill up, about a mile or less driving out of the gas station the car will buck and eventually completely stall losing power steering. This jeep had 122,000 miles on it, but this issue has occurred for every fill up since around 95,000. This is extremely dangerous as the car has stalled in the middle of intersections or in the middle of a lane. This sounds like the same problem that is mentioned on hundreds if not thousands of online forums. I've had the pcv valve, charcol canister, gas cap and 5 or more evap/emission parts replaced with genuine mopar parts and none of these replacements fixed the problem. This happens at any different gas station, different brands and different locations as well. The jeep stalling after fill up is extremely dangerous and puts me at risk of harm every time i left a gas station.

Tl* the contact owns a 2007 jeep patriot 4x4. While driving through a parking lot, the contact heard a loud popping sound from the rear driver's side of the vehicle. There was no warning indicator illuminated. The contact looked underneath the vehicle and saw a piece of the rear cross member frame that was fractured and detached. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the cross member frame needed to be replaced. The contact called cumberland chrysler dodge jeep ram at 931-263-0321 (located at 1550 interstate dr, cookeville, tn 38501) and was informed that there was no recall. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and stated that there was no recall, and referred the contact to nhtsa. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 160,000.

Fuel propulsion system problems. My son fills up his 2007 jeep patriot. I see from many post on forms this is a known problem. Why is chrysler not faceing this problem. You fill the jeep up and the the car stalls out and will stop dead in traffic this is so dangerous. What's being done about this why is the government not hold chrysler responsible for this. We have tried to different gas stations and now are being told that it is a known issue.

When i fill up the car with gas after leaving and driving for 20-30 seconds and stop at the stop light or sign the car will die and the steering wheel will lock up takes a couple of tries before it will start up and cause the steering wheel locks up i can't even move the car to the side if i have to. This has been going on for the past year.

Car stalls after filling up tank. Started doing this 3 fill ups ago. Different gas stations. Gas tank is not "topped off". Stalling occurs for the next few miles or 10 minutes of use. Car is fine after that. Stalling occurs when rpm is under 1000 and does this when stopped or slowing down to make a turn. Added "heet" to tank, thinking water may have gotten in there from the gas station. Ruled that out after using a different gas station. Car has 130,000 miles on it. I have owned it since it had 30,000 miles on it.

NoNoN NoneNone20181031

Filling the vehicle with fuel causes it to buck and stall. Waiting 5-10 minutes after it stalls and the vehicle runs normally. Only happens when filling the vehicle, putting in fuel to less than full does not cause the problem. According to my mechanic, the problem may the roll over valve allowing fuel into the charcoal canister/emissions system. My research on the internet confirms the problem with other 2007 jeep patriots and other model years as well. Nhtsa defect investigation #dP17002

Car has hard time starting after short time of being shut off. Company knows of this problem, it has instructions in owners m anual on how to restart car. Sometimes it can take a long time. This can put a lot of unnecessary stress on the battery. I believe this issue should have had a recall & be fixed by company. Please note: i'm not the original owner.

After filling up at gas station and getting on highway engine shuts off after the jeep bucked several times. When engine shut off steering wheel locked. Had to put car in neutral urn key to turn on engine. Additionally after that, jeep continually dies immediately following fill up at gas station. It currently dies approximately 3 times in a row before the engine will stay running. This is a highly dangerous event. If it shuts off and i do not wait at the gas station while i'm driving down the road then the steering wheel locks and i could have an accident and kill myself or someone else. This is a serious situation that jeep / chrysler needs to fix. Was there a crash ... Almost!

Every time i fill up with gas the engine stalls shortly after and the steering wheel locks up while driving. Very unsafe! I've tried to get the issue fixed but it sounds like a defect in the gas tank. Nothing that i have replaced has resolved this reoccurring issue.

The jeep's engine cradle/subframe is rusted out and has holes in it so it cannot hold motor and has a crack through the middle of frame.

After getting gas i starting driving towards the exit of the gas station. I only made it a few inches when my car started bucking and shaking really bad. My steering wheel locked so i couldn't turn my car out of the way from other drivers. I was also in drive and my car was just not moving. I decided to put it in park and let it sit there for a moment before i try to turn it on again. After about a minute i turn it on and move my car off to the side to get out of everyone's way. Once again the steering wheel locked and my car didn't want to stay on. Many minutes later after shutting it off and turning it back on i was able to drive a little ways down the road before once again my car started bucking really bad and shaking like it was going to shut off on a busy road. I decided to pull into a neighborhood where my steering wheel locked again and every light on my car came on (check engine, oil, tire, etc...). My air was coming out hot and my car smelled really bad. I decided to let my car sit there for awhile and finally after 20 minutes i was able to drive with no problems. I read up on this situation and it seems like a lot of people are having this problem with jeep patriots. I can't fill my tank up all the way because i experience these problems.

My front and rear cross members are corroded. I took it to the dealer i purchased the car from. They told me i had to call chrysler, which took forever and a day to get back to me (about 10 days). For them to tell me it was not something they feel is necessary to fix. If i want i could have the dealer do it, and pay out of my pocket. After doing some research, this seems to be a problem with the patriots, and some jeeps in general. This is not a fix i can afford, not can i get a new car at this time. Mechanics at the dealer were shocked chrysler did not approve this, since it is a safety issue.

Every time i refuel the vehicle sputters and stalls. No matter what grade of fuel. It will sputter and stall for up to 20 miles after i fill it up. It has even stalled when pulling into traffic and the steering wheel locks when that happens. It's not safe. The jeep dealership has been replacing stuff hoping to find a fix but no luck so far. It will stall stationary, moving, turning, or braking. I believe it may be something related to the fuel tank rollover valve. At least that's the only reasonable thing i have read or been told. I have a 2007 jeep patriot. Every single time i put gas in it, it runs a very short distance from the gas station and starts to buck and jolt like it wants to shut off. This is very dangerous if i wan to go on highway.

NoNoN NoneNone20180531

After the tank is filled to full, i then drive off, and the next time the car comes to a complete stop, the engine cuts out. The car has to be put into park and the engine is able to restart, and this only happens when the tank is full - but it causes the engine to stall out. As long as i don't fill the tank to full, it won't happen. However this has been consistently happening anytime i fill up the tank over the last year and a half.

NoNoN NoneNone20180526

Every time we fill the gas tank, within a couple miles or less, the engine begins to stall. This is a consistent problem and does not matter when/ where the vehicle is driving. Very dangerous situation as this usually happens in traffic after leaving the gas station.

Car purchased in wi and driven in tx. Car has been taken regularly to mechanic for maintenance for front suspension problems. At 77k, two outer tie rods and two lower ball joints replaced, at 133k, replaced one lower ball joint and one outer tie rod again. At 136k replaced inner tie rod. At 143k replaced two front control arms. Currently, both control arms and outer tie rods need to replaced again, current mileage is 198k. Mechanic has reported noise coming from front suspension and has noted heavy amount of rust on the front cross member. Structural integrity of the metal in front cross member is weak and further compromised if driving in areas where salt is used to de-ice road. In addition tires have needed to replaced each time due to uneven wear resulting from this problem. Car is main driven in city environment.

The car regularly stalls immediately after filling the gas tank up to full. Whether coming to a stop, or cruising, or lifting off the gas pedal while moving. Occasionally, early in the morning, it may stall also. It will restart immediately after stalling but the stalling is dangerous when driving at speed, on the highway, and/or in traffic.

Tl* the contact owns a 2007 jeep patriot. The contact stated that whenever the vehicle was refueled, it would stall or hesitate to drive. In addition, when the vehicle came to a complete stop, it would stall and restart independently after three minutes before suddenly operating normally. The contact stated that the failure only occurred after the vehicle was refueled. There was no warning indicator illuminated. The vehicle was not taken to a dealer or independent mechanic. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer advised the contact to take the vehicle to a local dealer. The approximate failure mileage was 43,000.

Vehicle will shut off and stall after refueling. Happens shortly after vehicle has been turned on. This has happened multiple times: sometimes will stall at the gas station, sometimes while waiting at a stop light after leaving the station, or sometimes while driving. Always after refueling.

After everytime i fill the fuel tank full of gasoline. After driving car from station, approximately .25 mile to 1 mile away. The engine will buck/shutter and stall while in motion at approximately 10-25 miles per hour. The engine experiences extreme loss of power with violent bursts of power. These incidents last ten seconds in duration. When attempting to merge on to highway, with heavy traffic, this can cause quite a bit of stress. This only happens after the fuel tank is filled full.

I have owned my 2007 jeep patriot since june 2017. About 3 months into owning it i have noticed that it will stall directly after i fill my gas tank. After i leave the gas station, i notice that the jeep starts to rattle and slow down, and while this is happening my steering wheel locks up and i am unable to turn and accelerate. This has happened about 10 times so far, and the most recent occurrence (12/11/17) it stalled 3 times within 5 minutes before the problem went away. There are no lights that warn me of this on the dash, making this a serious issue that could cause an accident if i were to be on a highway or busy intersection.

My jeep patriot is stalling after fueling. It seems to lose power & may sputter also before stalling. I can also smell a strong fuel or chemical smell when this happens. It has become a dangerous problem seeing as how it occurs after fueling and i have to pull out into traffic after leaving the gas stations. It has happened at large intersections where i have almost gotten hit by other vehicles or caused an accident for other motorists trying to avoid my stalled vehicle. So far, my jeep will start after stalling so i can continue on my way. It is a very scary situation when it happens and the fear of an accident is profound.

Much as we discovered with other complaints regarding the fuel/propulsion system on carcomplaints.Com the issue is that when the vehicle is fueled up even if you stop when the gas dispenser clicks off the car inevitably stalls and shuts off just a few minutes after the car is started and in motion. The stalling can occur when you get out into traffic, on highway, city street which can be a very dangerous situation. This has happened 20 times, at least, in our 2007 jeep patriot since purchasing the vehicle in october 2017. This has been a very well documented issue in the 2007 jeep patriots and apparently has to do with the charcoal canister which in order to fix, the entire gas tank has to be replaced.

NoNoN NoneNone20171002

After refueling my car, the engine will stutter or stall at the first stop or at leaving the gas station if the vehicle is going less than 40 miles per hours. This has occurred on more than 10 occasions, with the last one beginning at the stoplight before turning on to the freeway. This is a very stressful situation as it could easily cause a crash due to the engine failing unexpectedly.

NoNoN NoneNone20170901

I heard a knocking noise when i was backing out of my driveway and took it to a mechanic. They showed me that the rear sub frame was rotted. There is a huge hole from the rust. My car has always been garage kept and well maintained so this did not seem logical from everyday wear and tear.

NoNoN NoneNone20170831

The problem has been ongoing for over a year even after trying several different expensive corrective repairs. After refueling my jeep patriot, it stalls bucks and jerks. I start it up, and upon pressing the accelerator and pull away from pumps or out into traffic it begins to sputter buck and stall. It is very dangerouse esecially when pulling out of a gas station into traffic which has caused several close calls of my being hit because it has stalled in intersections and on the highway. I relaced the o2 sensor and it did not correct the situation. I used higher octane fuel and it did not correct the situation. I used fuel treatment purchased from dealership upon their advisement after replacing the fuel filter and having the fuel system serviced and it did not correct the situation.

Car stalls after refill and runs rough

NoNoN NoneNone20170724

Vehicle stalls after refueling. Each time that the vehicle is completely refueled, but not topped off, the vehicle will stall after approximately 30 seconds of driving, regardless of whether or not the vehicle is in motion. On multiple occasions this has happened when turning, causing the vehicle to lose power steering in the middle of an intersection. Research online has shown many other owners having the same issue. I have been told that the issue requires the replacement of the entire fuel tank in order to be resolved.

NoNoN NoneNone20170325

Shortly after filling the gas tank of my 2007 jeep patriot (49xxx miles) i was coming to a 4 way intersection (only my side and the opposite side of the intersection has stop signs). As i was pulling through the intersection my jeep patriot stalled and i lost my power steering and brakes. I was almost struck on the passenger side by a vehicle traveling from the right side of the intersection from my orientation of the intersection. I tried to restart the vehicle for about 5 minutes to no avail. It would start and then immediately stall again. After almost being struck 5-6 times and after about 5 minutes of being stuck in the middle of an intersection i managed to start the vehicle up and drive it home by driving about 15 miles per hour on backroads for the remaining 2 miles to my house. After searching the internet to find the problem i found that this is a common issue among many jeep patriot/compass owners and nothing has been done to address the issue. Please look into this issue as myself and my passenger (fiancee) could have been seriously injured if not for sheer luck.

NoNoN NoneNone20170314

After doing a full refuel of the vehicle the vehicle will stall while in motion, loosing all assisted steering and breaking. The first time this happened engine stalled in mid traffic and i was almost hit by the vehicle behind me on the city. Second time i reached the highway when it stalled this was even more scary. Vehicle will restart after putting in park and stall again a couple of blocks down. This only happens when the tank is filed till gas station pump auto stops. If i fill 3/4 then no stalling occurs. I have read online that this is happening to many jeep patriot owners. Some claim that it is related to liquid fuel going into the evap canister and then being sent to the engine when fiecu expects fuel vapors. This issue can cause fatal injuries if engine stalls on the wrong place.

My children and i were driving 75 mph on the freeway when my jeep patriot randomly shut off without warning, the the vehicle gave no indication whatsoever that there was an issue it just stop, the cars behind us started to steam on their brakes running off the road, we had to drive off the side off the road to prevent getting hit. It's was so terrifying . The police came and wanted to give us a ticket for wreck less operperation of a vehicle and though i was under the influence of something. I began to cry. It took 10 minutes to restart car. This happened again a couple hours later with no warning. When we got back from our trip we took it to ford marshall, nick mayer in mayfield ohio . It is documented there numerous times that this vehicle stalls randomly at high speeds but they cannot diagnosis the problem because the check engine light never comes on when this occurred and it is not sending a code to give them a diagnosis , so if they don't have a code , they can't warranty out the part to fix it for me to fix the issue. So then they send me home everythime and put me and my family in danger again. Today my car stalled again right in front of a police car. I just sat there and cried

My daughter's jeep has an extended warranty due to the rust and holes in the jeep's crossmembers. The gave me as reference x58. She needs them replaced as there are large holes in them, but the dealership told her if they couldn't get it off they would have to cut other parts and she would be responsible for the cost of the parts and labor (approximately $400) which the dealership said is typical. I've been in touch with customer service at jeep and they said she would first have to have the work done and then if there was a charge they would "consider" helping. So she would have to pay for the repair first. This hardly seems right. Is there any recourse?

I have had a problem with the engine bucking and even stalling after a full tank fill up. It usually buckles when i am moving and stalls if i am stationary. I have read numerous threads from others with the same problem. This is a safety concern because my vehicle has stalled in the middle of the road many times. Luckily i have not had an accident, but it's only a matter of time if it continues. It should not matter if this only happens to a hundred people or thousands. Lives are lives and they should be protected! Please help us all encountering this problem. The cost is very high to replace a whole tank and many of us can not afford it. Something must be done about this because it is obviously a common problem. Please help us stay safe!

After filling up the gas tank the car repeatedly stalls. It is not being over-filled. Not human error. Extremely dangerous. Stalls in traffic - no warning. Just quits. Repeatedly. Numerous trips to the dealer and lots of money spent and it was not repaired. Complained to chrysler who recommended we take it to another dealer. We did. The entire fuel tank had to be replaced. Mechanics familiar with the problem. Nhtsa site documents 35 reports of the same problem. 16 reports in 2016. Numerous also in the 2008 jeep. There needs to be an investigation into why no recall recommended.

NoNoN NoneNone20161002

I'm experiencing what i've found to be a well-documented issue with a vapor-liquid separator valve located in the gas tank of my 2007 jeep patriot. After fueling, moments after starting the car and putting it into drive, the car will stall and shut off. It will immediately re-start and run again but is pretty much guaranteed to shut off at every stop (i.E. At an intersection or while exiting the gas station) for the next few minutes. It also leads to hesitations of the engine while driving at full speed. This has happened to me the last four times i've filled my gas tank. On the most recent occasion, the engine stalled while in an intersection, as i started to make a left-hand turn. The engine shut off, the steering wheel locked up, and i had to throw it into park and restart the car while stalled in a lane of oncoming traffic. I'm very fortunate the oncoming vehicle was paying close attention and stopped to allow me to exit the intersection. This issue only occurs after filling the gas tank, when the vapor canister component that the valve is supposed to protect becomes flooded with liquid fuel during the fill. When this component purges its contents, the intake manifold is flooded with liquid fuel, rather than vapor, causing the stall. After driving several miles (presumably when all of the liquid fuel has been purged from the vapor canister), no more problems are seen until the tank is refilled. Some investigation has shown that i'm far from the only person to experience this dangerous defect. The faulty valve is located inside the gas tank, and the issue can only be resolved with a prohibitively-expensive replacement of the entire tank. This is absolutely a documented flaw inherent in several vehicle models in the chrysler family, and it needs to be addressed before anyone is killed as a result.

After fueling with gas, my vehicle immediately stalled. It was then fine after i restarted it until i got to a roundabout where it stalled again, losing all power steering, brakes, power, speed, in heavy traffic. It was fine for a week after this until i got gas again, in which case, i was just about to enter the interstate when it stalled again, losing all of the basic functions again in rush hour traffic where i had to sit on the side of the road for 20 minutes while my vehicle ran and stalled repeatedly until it worked itself out. This is a very dangerous situation and could have been much worse had i already been on the interstate. This is a definite issue that needs to be taken seriously and fixed as i see i am not the only one that has had this issue. I got gas again last week where afterwards my jeep stalled on main street during lunch traffic. I shouldn't have to be scared to put gas in my vehicle in case it decides to stall in another dangerous situation. I am worried about my safety and any passengers i may have with me at any point in time when it stalls and stops working completely while i am driving down any road. I am also concerned that i will be doing more wear and tear damage on my battery and starter as i am trying to restart my vehicle after it stalls on these roads with minimum to no shoulders. Thank you for your immediate attention to this horrible issue. *tr

NoNoN NoneNone20160820

Each time i fill the tank with gas and drive down the road the jeep shuts off and loses power instantly. I couldn't get it restarted. Now i'm right in the middle of the road in traffic. No power steering, stopped hard and suddenly. I could not restart the jeep. Several cars just missed from hitting me. I keep trying to start it meanwhile a truck is heading my way behind me. He slams on his breaks, yet a semi truck takes at least six car length to stop. He swerved to avoid hitting me thank god. Now i only put 3/4 of a tank of gas. It's frustrating to travel long distance due to having to stop for gas more often. The scariest thing is the huge chance of it stalling completely with no power and getting hit by other vehicles behind me. The impact of getting hit could kill people due to the harsh sudden stop. Is there anyway this can be investigated and recall the part causing this? This has happened to me three times. I live in a large city so most of the roads are freeways and highway. Speed limit is 65 to 70 mph.

When gas tank is filled up, the engine will stall or "surge" for the first few miles. After that the vehicle runs normal. I have researched the issue and have found that this is related to the charcoal canister located in the fuel tank. This has become an issue for a large number of jeep patriot owners and it is extremely expensive to have fixed by a dealer.

NoNoN NoneNone20160326

After filling gas tank with fuel, after 30ish seconds the engine will stall and sometimes recover, sometimes quit. This happens regardless of whether i am stopped at a light/sign or driving. I have read numerous reports of others having this same issue. Seems that the charcoal canister is filling with gas. Please help make this a known issue for other drivers! This has happened over the last 3 or 4 months with my vehicle.

NoNoN NoneNone20160313

Vehicle stalls after refueling. With no power steering the vehicle is difficult to maneuver. This has happened the last three fill ups. The last was the worst because it was very difficult to restart and was in traffic. Engine sounded flooded. Had to let it set a few minutes before retrying. This needs to be recalled.

NoNoN NoneNone20160309

After filling the fuel tank all the way the car will stutter and stall when you first pull away from the station. I was told this is because the vapors canister malfunctions. This isn't bad, except in this state the steering locks. It doesn't just get and to steer like old days without power steering, the steering wheel actually locks as if you are in park.

NoNoN NoneNone20160222

Vehicle stalls suddenly after re-fueling. This started happening a few weeks ago and now happens every time the car is re-fueled. It occurs a mile or so after leaving the gas station without warning in traffic. Defective fuel system problem is repeatable and dangerous. Get this recalled.

NoNoN NoneNone20160216

Every time after i fill the gas tank, i start the engine, it runs fine for 1-2 min. Then begins to buck and jolt like it wants to shut off. I've even had the engine completely shut off while on the highway. I'm very concerned that a serious accident could occur due to the unexpected loss of power rendering my steering and brakes inoperable. This behavior of the engine shut off does not occur again until the next time i fill up my gas tank. I've found information that this problem is due to a faulty vapor/liquid separator valve located at the top of the fuel tank.

NoNoN NoneNone20160210

Vehicle stalls after fueling. On line forum suggest chrysler knows about the problem, which is very expensive to remedy. The problem is the vapor/liquid separator valve on top of the fuel tank. Also referred to as fuel tank rollover valve. Requires replacement of fuel tank to replace valve which is not sold separately. Vehicle stalls after fueling creating a dangerous situation while in traffic. Usually happens within a minute or two or filling up gas tank.

NoNoN NoneNone20160131

Unable to fill the gas tank without the nozzle clicking off. If small amounts of fuel are poured into the gas tank it will eventually fill. Had the car gone through and the only solution is to replace the whole tank because the valve is a integral part of the tank. Car has 35000 miles.

NoNoN NoneNone20160128

When the tank is filled, the engine stalls soon after leaving the gas station. The vehicle buck and stalls, and quits completely. Very dangerous when it is in traffic or during a turn as steering and brakes non-functional. Have replaced charcoal canister but now mechanic informs me the whole gas tank assembly needs replacement. Work-around for now is to not fill the tank up all the way.

NoNoN NoneNone20160128

After refueling the vehicle will sputter and die causing loss of steering and propulsion. This causes a grave safety problem as it usually occurs while pulling out in an intersection putting the driver and all passengers at risk. This occurs for the first few miles after fueling and does not occur again till the next fill up. I am willing to demonstrate this for a nhtsa inspector if the are willing to investigate this safety issue as i see several others are having the same problem. Just search google.

I bought this vehicle in january 2016 for our daughter to take to college out of town. I checked for recalls before i bought and found none. The vehicle was purchased from a chevy dealer. After our purchase, i filled the tank with fuel. When i pulled away from the gas station and into traffic the vehicle stalls and cuts off in the middle of two lanes of traffic. I restarted it and went about a block and the vehicle stalls out going about twenty miles per hour while i was in traffic. I made it back home and called the dealer i purchased the vehicle from and they stated they did not know anything about it. I called a local jeep dearlership and asked a service manager and he said he has not heard of this problem. Imagine how you would feel if your child was driving a vehicle with this issue! My daughter did call yesterday, 1/24/2016 and stated she must have put too much fuel in the jeep because it stalled out in traffic after she pulled out of the gas station. My issue with this is that it seems to be a known documented issue and has been addressed multiple times on this site. The culprit seems to be a fuel/vapor canister valve in the fuel tank and causes the vehicle to stall if filled all the way up. There has been no recalls from jeep but you guys have documented cases. I bought the jeep used with no warranty offered so i am stuck with this. My question is why has there not been a recall issued from your department? I do not think it is responsible for jeep to ignore this issue nor your department ignore it also. There are a lot of complaints on the same issue with no action. I will appreciate you taking action to have jeep resolve this immediately.

Once fuel is put in (and not "topped off" just regular filling up), the car will start but will stall several times in the first few miles driven. When it stalls, the steering wheel locks and it's very dangerous, especially when this happens on the highway. In looking at jeep forums, it seems to be a pervasive issue with jeep and chryslers and it was suggested that it's a problem with the fuel/vapor valve in the fuel tank. There is no current recall on this. I've had a the fuel pump and the fuel canister both replaced. This happens when moving only after refueling. After it stalls and i restart 3-4 times, it runs fine until i refuel again. As for when this happened, it last happened yesterday (1/6/16), but it happens each and every time i refuel.

After filling the gas tank the engine will stall. It happens with engine idleing or after enterring traffic. Very very very very.......Dangerous, jeep needs to fix this issue. Tons of jeep owners are having this problem. Jeep don't wait until your product has kill a bunch of people including me and my family.

The vehicle stalls after filling-up the gas tank. The steering wheel will lock when it stalls, and sometimes the check oil light comes on. When you restart the vehicle, it runs fine until the next fill-up, and no light indicators stay on. It will stall if you are stopped or not accelerating. I have felt especially unsafe when it stalled in an intersection where i was waiting to turn left. All stalls have happened on city streets. If i do not stop within a mile or two of the gas station (like when traveling on the highway immediately after fill-up), it will hesitate / jerk very hard without stalling while the vehicle is accelerating. That is the only time it does not stall after filling up. I never top off the gas tank, and i always insure the gas cap is tightened. This is an ongoing problem, and i don't feel safe driving the vehicle for fear of causing an accident if stalling in an intersection.

Due to the failure and continued forward motion while driving, the entire front driver's side suspension had to be replaced.

Everything i fill up with gas the jeep dies pulling away from the pump. Sometimes you can get out in traffic and it will die while traveling slow. You have to stop restart the engine and hold you're foot on the gas and brake to keep the engine running at a stop. Could be dangerous if the jeep dies in the middle of a busy intersection.

Shortly after filling up the gas tank on 3 separate occasions, i could drive my car about 1/4 mile and the whole engine shuts off. This only happens when the tank is completely full. The car shudders and stalls repeatedly right after fill up. Once a small amount of gas is used the car seems to run fine but the stalling happens at idle. At a red light, stop sign, or when speeds are reduced to turn. It is very dangerous to know your car can shut off randomly, had to drive on highway and main roads with hazard lights on for fear of not knowing when it would stall again. Mechanics looked at all wiring and parts under hood of car and could not find anything. The only thing in common with the 3 stalls was that i had just filled the gas tank up completely. It seems chrysler has knowledge of this with other cars, minivans etc. Many jeep owners have complained about this exact issue on a jeep forum. Options seem to be: don't fill up completely, or replace the gas tank, which is costly.

After refueling vehicle to full tank capacity, the vehicle stalls and steering wheel locks in an intersection within a few blocks from the gas station. For 2 years, this vehicle has been stalling after every gas refueling. It has now started to lock the steering wheel concurrent with the stalling. My wife, who was driving the vehicle at the time of the 8/18/15 incident felt she was in danger as cars tried to avoid the vehicle as well as almost hitting another vehicle because of the locked steering wheel.

Driving 70mph on the highway, the tire low pressure light came on. Moments after, i noticed the steering was odd and seconds after i heard the flopping. The tire valve stem with tpms failed. It had lost the nut which holds the stem to the wheel. I was going down the highway at 70mph! This is a safety hazzard and these need recalled and replaced with good parts!!!!!!!! This is the 2nd valve stem where the nut has disappeared and leaked air from the tire so it went flat! This is unexceptable. I just found out jeep is the last to have a universal replacement rubber stem which can be programmed to the auto's computer. Federal regulations to implement more safety standards and the parts are made from aluminum and plastic (as to not increase mpg another fed regulation) which cannot hold up to the outside elements. Taxpayers are paying the bill again with $60-$70 to replace each tpms since the valve alone cannot be replaced plus the aluminum ones are guaranteed to again fail. Why don't i see more complaints on nhtsa for tpms since there are lots more on the internet.

I bought my 2007 jeep patriot on 1/24/2015 i was so excited. I started having problems around 5 months with the gas tank. I bought a new gas cap and yes jeep brand and still the same problem. I have been reading other owners issue and they are identical to mine. The car stalls and shut off in the middle of traffic, at a stop light or just whenever. I was reading some complaints and they were saying the charcoal canister is the problem. The complaint also said you can not replace the charcoal canister, because it was build into the fuel tank, so you have to replace the whole fuel tank. The cost for a new fuel tank is around $1,250.00 ☹️ very sad about the cost. My boyfriend gave me his car to drive because he said it's to danger for me to be driving my car, but he drives it now and i'm worried he might get hurt. I do think this should be a recall item before someone gets badly hurt or die.

Was driving two hours away for a medical appointment, and was just driving in the right lane. I was passing a vehicle in the left lane and had no power at all. The high pitch wine came from under the hood and the rpm were redlining at 65 mph. The transmission would not shift and the jeep just slowed on its own. The temperature light for the transmission came on. Pulling over to the median almost killed my husband and i. This is a dangerous vehicle to drive and go over 50mph. We had to sit on interstate 64 for an hour to let the transmission cool down. Something needs to be done before someone is killed from their transmission stalling or overheating going down an interstate, or just driving for any period of time on a highway. We do not fee safe in this 2007 jeep with only 70,000 miles on it. The transmission has already been replaced once and we were not even told that by the dealership!!! After refueling, the car will stall just after leaving the gas station. This usually occurs when i'm stopped at a light and the car is idling. If i'm not stopped at a light, i'll feel a stuttering or jerking motion about a block away from the gas station. I've just been dealing with it because the car always starts back up again. However, now i'm unable to fill the gas tank without the pump shutting off every half gallon. I believe the fuel inlet check valve may be the culprit.

After leaving a gas station and driving about a half of mile down the road, my car started to stall. I then had to put my car in park and completely turn it off and turn it back on. When i went to turn it back on, it did not start up right away. Then the next red light that i stopped at, which was a half of mile after the first stop, my car stalled again. I then put the car back in park, put my flashers on and restarted the car. Now every time i fill my tank to full the car stalls. It is very scary and when i took it to the mechanic, he said it would cost about $1000 to replace the gas tank. Apparently, there is a valve that prevents the gas from leaking out if the car were to ever rollover. In order to fix this problem, i was told that the whole gas tank would have to be replaced.

The vehicle stalls when slowing to a stop. It is not during every stop but more likely to occur after refueling the car. On the first incident in october 2014, i had driven home from work (35+ miles) and when slowing to a stop at a light the vehicle stalled. It easily restarted and returned to normal. Since then the driving issues have increased to rpm decreases while driving on a highway ' the engine kicks/jerks the car and returns to normal driving. The jeep stalls every time it is refueled ' i am not intentionally overflowing the gas tank. It will stall multiple times after the refill. The rpm fluctuates regardless of when the last time the tank was refueled. I have been on the highway traveling over 50mpg when the engine kicked, rpm decreased, and i thought i was losing power about to stall. On nov 26, 2015 the engine stalled again. My two preschool aged kids were in the back of the vehicle. I couldn't quickly restart the jeep. We sat on the side of the road for a moment ' possibly 4 minutes ' waiting to try the engine again. It did restart and the entire ride home, approximately 3 miles ' the rpms fluctuated without my hitting gas or breaks. It then stalled in the driveway when parking. I didn't touch the car for two days, over thanksgiving holiday. When attempting to use it again, the rpm fluctuated but the vehicle did not stall. Instead, i was able to park the car and turn the jeep off and remove the key but the engine was still running. It was just a few seconds but it was running and i was looking at the key in my hand. My husband drove it an hour later to test it out and the jeep stalled again in the driveway. *js

A mechanic told me that the overflow valve is probably the problem,. He stated that when filing up with gas, it is not shutting off the nozzle flow in time, and although it isn't spilling gas on the ground it is wetting the canister. He says that throws off the air-gas calculations until the canister dries, 1-4 mins after running. In the meantime, it shutters hard and/or stalls multiple times, even while driving. His recommendation was to live with it and just manually fill up a little under full. This is because the valve can't be replaced w/o replacing the entire tank.

After filling up tank to "click" shutoff with no overfilling, jeep patriot 2007 stalls and shuts down completely after about 2 minutes or 1 mile back on the roadway. After the first incident, this continued happening after every complete to "click" fill up. Took jeep to dealerships in plano, tx and richardson, tx for consultation with their service departments. Both service managers informed me that it could be any part in the fuel delivery system malfunctioning that would cause this, and that any repairs would be exploratory and most likely the total would be $1,000 parts and labor. My research on the web points to a faulty valve that is integrated into the fuel tank (not separately replaceable from replacing the fuel tank) that doesn't shut off correctly. This causes the vapor canister to become saturated, which messes up the fuel/air mix beyond the ability of the computer to compensate for, so the jeep stalls. The stalling out with the loss of power steering makes navigating out of traffic difficult and dangerous to me and other drivers. For now, i guess about when the tank might be full at fill-ups, and manually stop the fill-up. Filling up short of the auto "click" shutoff has so far avoided further stalls. However, doing this is not always easy to monitor. Also, i now worry that the vapor canister and perhaps other fuel system delivery components may be damaged, but don't want to pay for exploratory (guesses) parts and labor repairs; i would like a clear indication from the manufacturer as to the specific part(s) failures that are causing the stalls, and would like for them to recall any parts as a major safety issue.

The hydraulic clutch system failed thus resulting in the inability to disengage the transmission without turning the key of witch results in a whole other realm of issues. Upon inspection there is no separate reservoir for the clutch it is connected to the brake master cylinder so potentially the clutch system could fail and leave you no way to disengage the transmission and also no way to stop. After doing some online research this is a common complaint for owners with a manual transmission in this design platform. *js

On 09/17/13 at 0858 hours, i was driving my 2007 jeep patriot on the i-17 frontage road when the vehicle began to lose power steering. Prior to the loss of power, i was traveling northbound on an even concrete surface at approximately 50 mph in normal traffic conditions. When the vehicle began to "act up," the light for my electronic stability control turned on and the esc became active and my check engine light began to blink amber. Due to esc, my vehicle was extremely difficult to control (once again this was on an even, paved surface with no conditions requiring the esc to activate). Along with the esc becoming active, my vehicle began to stall and lose power. My engine would peak at a mere 2000k rpm and at about twenty miles per hour. Thankfully i was only on a frontage road and was able to quickly pull into an industrial area, however, if i was on i-17 (which does not have a shoulder) i would have been in great danger. Once stopped, i had to stop/start my engine four times for the esc and check engine light to deactivate. Once they did the vehicle operated normally. I took the vehicle to jeep dealership in north phoenix to see what was wrong with the vehicle. They advised it returned a "torque request signal denied" historical code for when the incident occurred, which "doesn't make any sense." i believe the above incident is related to two events that happen on 9/14/13. Upon each complete fill-up with gasoline, shortly after driving off from fueling, the vehicle will buck severely, and shut off. When it shuts off and rolls to a stop, steering control and power braking is lost, and you are at the mercy of all traffic around you! This has been going on since around 2012. From countless hours of investigation from other owners on forums, discussions with dealership personnel, as well as my own independent mechanic's electronic and mechanical analysis, this appears to be a common complaint among patriot & compass owners of multiple production years. The only work around is to not fill up the (already tiny) fuel tank completely. The most likely root cause is a malfunctioning fuel tank roll-over valve, which allows raw fuel to enter the evap system, and upon the ecm issuing a "purge command," the vehicle stalls. Compounding the situation is that the roll-over valve is not replaceable separately from the entire fuel tank assembly. With the vehicle being long out of warranty, the cost of a complete new fuel tank assembly plus labor, is prohibitive. This is clearly a safety related defect that chrysler does not want to stand behind. I have had several close calls when leaving gas stations, pulling out into traffic and nearly being rear-ended when the vehicle stalled. I imagine if nhtsa does not hold chrysler accountable for all of these non-conforming vehicles, which by now are mostly out of warranty, the only way to get chrysler to take responsibility, would be to get into an accident due to the stalling issue, and then sue them, assuming i lived! This is unacceptable. Dealerships and chrysler customer relations have been absolutely no help at all. You are our only hope.

After having a shop aligned my vehicle twice due to uneven tire wear. I took it in to the mechanic and asked them to check the front suspension. Mechanic was amazed at the poor condition of the front suspension due to the low mileage of the vehicle and the fact that it has never being off road and only driving on highway. He said in 25 years he had never seeing a front suspension so loose and requiring full replacement of lower control arms, ball joins, tie rod ends. While doing a tire rotation they also noticed excessive rust on hub and axle nut. Explained this could be a fatal safety issue and my wheels could fall off. Chrysler knows there is an issue and even issue tsb to torque lower control arms to try to band aid the problem. Mechanic stated that the quality of these front suspension parts it's inadequate for this vehicle. Chrysler has recalled the same problem on other similar models but even with 100's of reports online and over 50 reports on this site they refused to admit that front suspension components are failing a very low mileage. What's it going to take for tires to start flying off and people to due to the poor quality of these problems. After the warranty is over chrysler wont do anything about it and they should at least meet the owners half way, rectify the dismal quality of the parts and pay for the parts while customer pays for labor. This is dangerous and will cause fatal accidents. How can a vehicle that was designed for "trail rated" off road used by rusting apart and having these major suspension issues under non off road use. *tr

I began to hear a humming sound from my rear wheel after doing research jeep patriots are experiencing a tremendous amount of wheel bearing failures at low mileage. The dealer does not have the part in stock and they've superseded the part number 4 times, which tells me that chrysler knows there is an issue and has been unable to re engineer the wheel bearing correctly. Upon inspection the wheel bearing hub it's completely rusted, frozen and unable to extracted from the spindle. Almost every jeep patriot, compass and caliber has had to have the bearings replaced at very low mileage. The amount of corrosion on the hub for such a low mileage vehicle it's unacceptable. Purchased this vehicle in may of 2012. Vehicle makes large rattling racket when going over any type of dirt road/brick road and a clunk when going over large bumps (speed bumps). Have taken to mechanic several times - turns out the large clunk was the ball joints...They were completely worn at 48000 miles which in turn changed the alignment of my wheels - as well as after driving it a mere 10000 miles made both front tires completely bald. *tr

When i purchased the vehicle in 2012 i was assured that the pull and sound from the front end was just a needed alignment. 2 months later it was clunking and popping. After taking it to a mechanic, they stated that both lower control arms including ball joints, and the tie rod were terribly worn. The mechanic was not surprised because of the make and model of the jeep patriot. Said it is a well known issue for these to go out almost immediately after the warranty expires. This jeep is supposed to be "trail rated" with the off road package, but i don't even feel safe driving it on city roads and haven't since i bought it. I have had to replace these part by part due to the fact of the high cost and that the value still holds up on jeeps so i make monthly finance payments on a vehicle that should have been recalled. This is outrageous that i am stuck with the 100% of these repair bills to fix what should not be a problem on a jeep. I am extremely disappointed in chrysler jeep and will probably never purchase another one again. :( *tr

I bought my 2007 jeep patriot brand new and it has been nothing but problems ever since. Today is the final straw and something needs to be done to chrysler. Everytime i press the brakes to stop, my engine stalls out. This problems frequency seems to have increased since it is raining. My patriot has stalled previously throughout the years but they were isolated incidences or so i thought. After reading jeep forums online, i see this is a recurring problem which jeep is not addressing. This is a major safety hazard as i live in a highly congested area. Stalling on the expressway or in the middle of an intersection can lead to accidents and i am concerned about my safety. This isn't the only problem i have had with this car. Apparently its not uncommon to have to replace both lower control arms containing the ball joints at 30k miles. I have had to replace all four tires due to irregular wear and tear from defective parts. Even after an alignment, at high speeds the car vibrates harshly. The transmission struggles when accelerating. I perform regular maintenance on my car and should not be experiencing these issues. The dealerships won't do anything about these problems because they have not been addressed by daimler chrysler. This is unacceptable for any manufactured car. I cannot believe jeep gets away with all these safety hazards and nothing is being done about it. *tr

I am from canada and own a 2007 jeep patriot 4x4. I only use my vehicle for highway driving and never take it off road. I only drive it with care. Recently, i brought my jeep to a dealership because of a strange noise. Through a service, it was determined my lower ball joints were excessively worn to the point of being a safety hazard. They needed to be immediately replaced in addition to the control arms. This cost approximately $1000 cad. In reading over the internet, this seems to be a common manufacturing problem with issues across the board. There has never been a recall. There is no way the ball joints should be needing replacement in a vehicle that is only 3 years old with normal driving use. Had i not brought my vehicle in for a service, this would not have been discovered and would possibly have lead to a serious accident. Jeep needs to address this problem immediately before someone gets hurt. *tr

Entire front end of our 2007 jeep patriot needed replaced at only 57,000 miles. In addition this caused both brand newfront tires to wear aggressively and now they need replaced. It began with a clunking and popping in the front driver side tire 2 weeks ago. The issue only occurred when going over speed bumps at low speeds. The second week it happened after being at a stop and accelerating. I took it to the dealer who informed me that jeep patriots are known for bad u joints and front end assembly. They are replacing the bad u-joints with the same defective part! Just outside of warranty my wife's 2007 patriot 2.4l started to fail to start. It was verified that it was not the battery, pcv valve, starter, or a fuel issue. Problem was isolated on a routine oil change. I had noticed handling problems coming down hill and applying brakes earlier in the month. Dealer says both front tie rod ends are shot, as well as lower right ball joint and control arm. They want $600 to repair it. I have researched this and it can cause rapid tire wear, or loss of control. The failure is apparently endemic with jeep patriots, as i have found many complaints from other owners as frequent as every 12k miles on the jeep patriot online forum. Some owners have almost lost control of their car. Some owners have reported multiple failures. I have never had a car which required a tie rod or control arm, let alone at 32k miles. This vehicle is supposed to be a rugged off road vehicle, and i have yet to take it off the road. So why did it fail so soon? If this faiure occurs this frequently, and if each occurence carries a potential loss of control, wouldn't that be a serious safety hazard? *tr

At an oil change and inspection in early december 2010, the jeep dealer told me my front tie rod ends and control arms needed replacement. Everything else was fine. My 2007 jeep only had 32k miles on it, so i finally got them to pay part of this. Two weeks later, while i drove my car to the dealer for the repairs, the car started "jack hammering". It was as if the brakes were being pulsed on and off hard. (my foot was not on the pedal and i was driving 55 mph) the dealership told me next day that my front brakes were fried and loaded with rust, and unsafe to drive. I paid them for the repairs. A week later, the "pulsing" recurred, and then a rear brake locked up. I had to get those rotors, calipers and pads replaced too. My problems continued. I had jeep look again. They could not replicate the problem. The problem is infrequent, but i continue to have a lesser pulsing sensation and a dragging sensation, like pushing a shopping cart with a bad wheel. Two days ago, i took my car to an independent shop. They couldn't replicate the problem, but told me my new tires (less than 5k miles) have already been damaged by this brake problem. They also pointed out how extremely rusty the axles and axle nuts are. So rusty, you can't tell they are nuts. I am driving around now wondering if my wheels and hubs will fly off the car at any minute because there is no metal left to hold them on. Why would these parts rust so badly, and so quickly? Why would the dealer put brand new rotors and calipers on such severely rusted axles and nuts without telling me? Don't they care if i'm safe? I have since found out from researching this, that others have the same problems with premature failures of control arms, brakes, etc. Due to rust. I also found out t jeep is not (has never) notified me of recalls. Aren't they required to do that? Then again, they sold me a brand new car without the federally mandated mulroney sticker, and lied to me about the mpg. *tr

My 2007 jeep patriot 4wd classic has been stalling out on me constantly. Since i've purchased the vehicle i have experienced upwards of 5 full stall-outs at stop lights or stop signs and upwards of 50 surge like motions (feeling like it's close to stalling out on me) at stop lights and stop signs. Usually me and my passengers can feel it and as soon as i give it some gas the surge stops and everything is fine or the vehicle stalls completely. It sickens me to be paying for this fairly new vehicle and it's doing this. *tr

In a car used only in city roads: - 21000 miles: power steering pump, gear and nuts (jeep covered) - 32000 miles: left ball joint replaced (jeep covered) - 45000 miles: right ball joint needs replacement (not covered by jeep) this has created a lot of additional charges not covered by jeep like alignment, tires, etc. Jeep liberty was also recalled due to a similar problem. Please consider this problem as from the current list of 37 complains for this car(including this) 24 are for the same problem i am reporting. *tr

My car was still having a delayed start when attempting to start the engine a month after taking it into the dealer and having it checked. There were even times when it would not start the first time. One day, literally about 0.5 miles after exiting the freeway, the rpms went up and down chaotically and the car began to come to a stop. Luckily, i was able to coast over onto the side of the road and call for assistance. And good thing i was no longer on the freeway. My car was taken to the dealer. They looked at it and said a wire to the starter needed to be replaced, as well as the battery. They replaced the solenoid wire to starter and i purchased a new battery. *tr

2007 jeep patriot with 26,000 miles, purchased new from dealer. Noticed tires worn and went to mechanic to replace two front tires. I was informed that the lower ball joints and control arms needed to be replaced at they were loose only after 26,000 miles of light driving, never off road. *tr

2007 jeep patriot - 58,000 miles - never been off road - highway driven 90% have to completely replace front components - ball joints / tie rods, etc. Rear wheel bearing needs replaced told by mechanic we were lucky we didn't have an accident - they were that bad. Can't believe jeep has not been forced to recall and fix this terrible problem. *tr

The car was shifting hard into gear, more like a manual, instead of smoothly shifting. Sometimes there was a delayed start when starting the engine. This occurred for several months and was taken in to the dealership to be examined. They replaced the intake manifold and flash pcm. The dealership kept the old part. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2007 jeep patriot fwd. The contact stated that she was experiencing a recurring failure in which the passenger side ball joint would continuously need replacing. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for repairs and most recently, the contact was advised that the driver side ball joint would also need replacing. The manufacturer was made aware of the recurring failure but provided no assistance. The failure mileage was 40,000 and the current mileage 55,000.

Lower ball joints on 2007 jeep patriot shot at 45,000 miles. According to three mechanics who saw the problem, the problem is severe and i've been advised to either not drive the car or immediately repair the problem. Each mechanic said the ball joints should not go at 45,000 miles and noted several issues with chrysler and failed ball joints. While on a lift, one mechanic showed me how my two front tires can simply be moved side to side. That should never happen i was informed. Very dangerous as it can cause the wheel to fly off the car. I've been hearing noise and feeling tire shakes for awhile now. Thought it was my brakes..Which by the way also need replacing however i am being advised to spend my money first on the ball joints since it is an immediate major safety concern. Not feeling very safe, especially with my two children in the car! *tr

2007 jeep patriot fwd - during a routine oil change they stated that the lower ball joint was showing wear and would need replaced soon. Vehicle is only 3 years old, not taken "off roading" and only has 30,000 miles on it. I have searched and noted numerous others stating the same exact issues with the same exact model. Where is the recall??? Of course the dealer says the vehicle is out of warranty by 3 months. You also can't just replace the ball joint you have to replace the control arm as its an assembly - and you have to replace both sides at the same time - holy money pit-! *tr

2007 jeep patriot 4x4 with almost 37k miles needs new rear brakes and ball joints. Repair is approximately $1,000. This has never been taken off roading although it is "trail rated" . Brakes and ball joints should not fail so soon and the consumer should not have to pay such a high repair cost. Jeeppatriot.Com and other sites have several complaints on the same issue. This could be a serious safety issue, especially if there were an inexperienced driver at the wheel! *tr

It began to rain so we turned on our wipers only to find that we had no wipers. They will turn on sometimes, but only on the highest setting, yet at a less than minimal speed. We thought it could be a loose connection or something seeing as our vehicle is only 3 years old, but when we went to the jeep dealership to fix it theft said it was the wiper computer module and would cost nearly 1000 dollars to fix. Unfortunately we did not have the money at the time to replace it. *tr

Went to go get my jeep inspected, upon inspection my vehicle had failed due to the tire being loose and the outer tie rod needing to be replaced. Went to the dealer the next day and had the tie rod replaced. Went back to get my vehicle re-inspected and again failed for the same reason. Went back to the dealer and was told that the ball joint and control arm was bad. Both of these problems are hazardous to the owners driving them. Someone is going to get seriously hurt if not killed while driving this vehicle and the front suspension gives out. *tr

For the past several years, my jeep patriot cuts off every time i get gas. I've taken it to the dealership several times. They have replaced my fuel pump and auxiliary (i believe thats what its called) and i still have the same problem. Ive also had my throttle bottled cleaned twice. Occasionally, the engine light comes on with code P0442 but goes off after a day or two. It's becoming super frustrated and clearly dangerous to continue to drive this car with no solution.

Lower ball joint failure on both sides of my 2007 jeep patriot at 32k miles.. Only 6 weeks out of the 36 month warranty. It was not even safe to drive. Chrysler will do a good will assistance on this $1,200 repair by charging me only $250 since it was officially out of warranty. I had no choice as the car had to be repaired. But in my opinion, they are admitting an issue or they would have given me nothing. This is my second jeep that has experienced ball joint failure a very early mileage. My other jeep, a liberty, had a recall . Chrysler advises they do not have a recall on the patriot for this issue. Someone should be looking at this problem. If the ball joints failed on the highway, a terrible accident would have occurred. It took them forever to acknowledge the liberty ball joint issue. Please investigate. *tr

This vehicle is my daughters and when we took it in to have new tires installed they discovered the defects. In april 2010 my daughter complained of a clunking noise when she would hit a bump in the road. She called me and i assured her that it was safe to drive with only 35000 miles on the vehicle. During this same time frame she took this jeep in for a regular oil change and at billion motors in sioux falls,sd and they tell her she has a bad tie rod end. Again i assured her that with only 35000 miles it is okay to drive. I have been a mechanic for over 30 years, but i was wrong. When we took this "jeep" in to new tires installed the technician informed us that the right front lower ball joint and the left front outer tie rod end were defective. We went to the tire shop and he showed me the defective parts, so i had new parts installed. At this time the vehicle was four years old or "new" and had 44,000 miles. If this vehicle had been abused maybe these parts would be bad, but it never leaves the highway. Maybe jeep needs to install grease zerks in their parts. Ball joints used to last 150,000 miles, these must be new and improved -huh!!! Having bad ball joints and tie rod ends on a vehicle three years old is just wrong. How many of these parts have failed and caused accidents? *tr the consumer stated a couple of years ago, the vehicle began stalling randomly. The vehicle displayed an engine code: P2110 throttle actuator control system. The dealer changed the transmission fluid twice, and performed some transmission updated. However, as the consumers daughter was driving home, the vehicle stalled again. The vehicle was returned to the dealer, where there cleaned the throttle body. However, the vehicle continued to stall. Updated 11/04/15.*jb

Jeep 2007, standard. During an oil change told control arms and front ball joints worn , will need to replace them! Have 47,000 miles on the jeep; am a conservative driver. Tires are worn; have always pulled to the side. Shifting is horrible; slips into other gears. This suv is less than 3 years old. I have had nothing but problems with this vehicle. The jeep is a danger, unsafe, and should be off the market. In 2007 the patriot was not popular. The economy has led people to purchase this vehicle, my guess is that more complaints will be filed when their jeeps reach two years old. *tr

1. Went into firestone for oil change, and to look at my tires because i thought they were loose. 2. Front control arms and ball joints are messed up, which caused severe damage to inner tires to where the wires inside the tire were showing from the outside. 3. Had to replace control arms and front tires. *tr

The gas tanks on these cars are defective..You have a hard time putting in gas ans then after you do it stalls and putters for about 15 mins after. This is a well known issue -it seems a charcoal filter in these tanks is causing this problem. This is very dangerous-you can stall out in traffic after filling up and get slammed in the back!! Chrysler is well aware of this be refuses to recall. Probably due to cost..Someone is going to get killed if this issue isn't corrected !Many times i have started to stall out after filling up with traffic bearing down on me and my family..Please help us! Thank you!

The lower control arms of my 2007 jeep patriot had to be replaced in january,2010 . I was told that my tire could fall off - funny because i have all my service work done at the dealership - they replaced them for about $125 as a courtesy - never mentioned a possible problem during any prior visit - 39,000 on jeep. *tr
