NHTSA Mandated Recalls
  • Recall 117046 [USA]: If the shift lever disengages from the transmission, a driver may be unable to shift gear positions and the indicated shift position may not represent the gear position the vehicle is in. should a disengagement occur while the vehicle is being driven, when the driver goes to stop and park the vehicle, the gear selection indicator may show that the transmission is in the "park" position, but the vehicle transmission may not actually be in the "park" gear position. if the vehicle is not in the "park" position there is a risk the vehicle will roll away as the driver and other occupants exit the vehicle or anytime thereafter. a vehicle rollaway increases the risk of injury to exiting occupants and bystanders.
Ford motor company (ford) is recalling certain model year 2001-2008 ford escape and mercury mariner vehicles manufactured march 31, 2001, to september 1, 2009. The affected vehicles are equipped with either a 2.3l or 3.0l engine and have had their cd4e transmission replaced with remanufactured one that was rebuilt between june 11, 2015 through july 15, 2015. These service repair part transmissions have a shift lever bolt that may not be properly tightened. As a result, the shift control lever could disengage from the transmission without warning.
ford will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the transmissions and either tighten the manual shift lever bolt or replace the manual shift lever assembly. These repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began on october 23, 2015. Owners may contact ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 15s28.

Nhtsa received a petition on or about july 18, 2022, requesting that federal motor vehicle safety standard (fmvss) 141 be applied to all electric and hybrid vehicles operating in the united states. The petition can be reviewed at nhtsa.Gov under odi number 11486072.Fmvss 141 establishes performance requirements for pedestrian alert sounds for motor vehicles. The standard applies to hybrid and electric vehicles that have a gross vehicle weight rating of 4,536 kg or less or are defined as low-speed vehicles. The standard became fully applicable to all such vehicles manufactured on or after march 1, 2021.The petitioner asserts that hybrid and electric vehicles to which the standard does not apply should be found to contain a safety defect. In support of the petition, the petitioner includes findings contained in a bill introduced in the house of representatives in 2009, the pedestrian safety enhancement act of 2009, h.R. 734, 111th cong. (2009). A related bill, the pedestrian safety enhancement act of 2010, became law in january 2011 (pub. L. 111-373). The petitioner requests that nhtsa require all electric and hybrid vehicles comply with fmvss 141, regardless of production date. The defect petition has been opened to evaluate the issue and determine whether to grant or deny the petition. The associated product list is not exhaustive and may contain vehicles that are equipped with pedestrian alert sounds.

As i am driving down the road, on a city street. The vehicle will just shut off, for no apparent reason. It does this several times. Every time the car is been driven it will shut off several times and me and my family have been in traffic when this has occurred. It continues to do this at any speed and every time the car is driven. Can't drive the car not even a mile before it totally shuts off.

While deiving a message on the dash stated to stop while it is safe. The car proceded to stall. It could not be started. I happen to be in the middle of the road and required to call for help to push the vehicle to the side. I was able to start the car later that day to drive it home. This is the forth time it happened over an 18 month period. I was very lucky that i was not in heavy traffic or on a high speed road during any of these events. I did have the car to a repair shop after the last time it happened and described the problem to the mchanic. Repairs were made but nothing to do with this problem. This is definitely a safety issue and it appears that it has been reported many times. I do not understand why there has not been a recall on this issue. I don't know what to do at this time or whether i should continue using the vehicle.

The car shuts down on the freeway while driving at 60-70 mph. A red triangla is displayed along with a message, pull over stop safely now. This has occurred several times after driving g approxamately 30 miles. Luckily i was able to pull over safely. The car restarts within 30 seconds and will shut down again every 5 mins until the vehicle is allowed to cool down.

When slowing for a stop sign on a suburban street, the vehicle lost all braking power. (it had shown no prior problems.) we had the vehicle checked - both front hydraulic lines had broken.

CrashNoN NoneNone20190114

In stop and go city traffic going about 1 mile an hour i braked but my mariner didn't and i slowly rear ended another vehicle. My abs sensor went on then off eventually an abs regen light came on and i had no brakes so i drove ,very carefully, 83 miles to my ford dealer ( with no brakes) to find out that i needed a complete replacement of my abs hybrid braking module. $3900! My mechanic and i called two different junk yards where we received replacements and they were installed but when brought back to the ford dealer the units wouldn't take the computer code and the (used) systems failed. $3900 is a lot of money for a vehicle, with 158,000 miles on it, that i bought used for under $5000. That said is there anyway that this abs hybrid brake module should have been on a recall list. Are others having similar issues? Is this why they quit making hybrids at this time? I don't know but i'm thinking this is a recall issue at that price.

The car shuts down the powertrain, resulting in a stall-like condition, and reads pull over safely now. This happens without warning while driving down city street and while parked.

NoNoN NoneNone20180530

I put my 2006 mercury mariner hybrid into reverse to back out of my drive way. I applied a little gas and began rolling down the incline towards the street. As i approached the street i put on my brakes, but nothing happened and i failed to slow down. A code displayed on my dash reading, "regen brakes" the last word was either failure or disabled. I can't remember because i was in a panic about my brakes not working with my family in the car. I applied the brakes again. The brake pedal was hard to push and though i tried with all my strength, it did not stop the car. My husband then pulled the parking brake from the passenger seat. I turned the car off to collect myself, hoping the failure was some weird fluke, and turned the car back on. It immediately did the same failure. At this point, i put the car in park and my husband offered to drive it around the block and back into the garage. It never showed another code afterwards. We left the car for a few hours and then cautiously drove it to the gas station. No more codes or issues. However, we no longer feel we can safely drive the car as we have no idea when the brakes could go out again. Next time we may not be so fortunate as to be on a residential street with no other traffic.

I was driving on the turnpike and my car suddenly dint turn when i turned the steering. Me and my passengers somehow escaped the life threatening situation in the middle of the traffic. It was my cars sub frame that was rusted so bad that it broke in the middle of the road. This is after i service my car every now and then. Its a serious issue with this car and there should be a recall for this problem. I had to spend so much due to this carelessness from the company.

My family and i were driving on highway one in california, major turns, twisty road when suddenly and without warning, the power steering went out. I have had no warnings leading up to this event. The wrench icon came on and an error message came on in the dash stating to have the power steering serviced. This was extremely dangerous as highway one has many tight turns. I have contacted ford and they are saying that this is not part of a recall. Everything i have read states that this is a common problem specifically in the hybrid vehicles ford manufactures. There have been recalls for the same issue for 2008 and newer model vehicles, but not this one. It is my belief that this issue should be investigated due to the dangerous condition caused by the power steering going completely out on the car while driving. I am male 200 lbs. And could barely control the vehicle. Called non ford mechanic and was told to take vehicle to dealership as the power steering module is proprietary and needs to be programed by dealership. Have not talken vehicles to dealership as yet for repairs. Placed code reader on vehicle and codes C2792 and B2277 came up.

My vehicle: 2006 mercury mariner hybrid suv. Purchased new in 2006. In hot weather...Vehicle engine quits while in motion on freeway at approximately 70 mph (3 times), and city streets (3 times). Extremely dangerous when engine quits while driving on freeway in traffic. All you can do (while praying!) is coast to a stop and do your best to pull off on to shoulder of road without crashing into other vehicles. We have tried 3 times to get ford motor to repair this problem...All to no avail. The last time we had to pay approximately $1,500. However, ford motor did reimburse us! But at the same time they claimed the problem was resolved. Not true! About two years later the problem started all over again. For10 years we have been driving a defective vehicle that was--at all times--a danger to our lives. Ford motor should have taken this problem much more seriously and either replaced the vehicle with a another one, or truly fixed the problem. I feel ford motor has liability in this matter. The last time this problem occurred was july 16, 2017.

I was backing out of my driveway turning onto the road, when my power steering went out. I took my 2006 mercury mariner hybrid to the ford dealership. At first they thought there was a recall on it. It was the wrong year. It seems to me that ford would include 2006 if it is the same problem. Nobody will buy this model because of this issue. Come on ford your problems are my problem. This is not right! It seems to me that with this power steering issue in so many of the 2006 vehicles you would step up and do a recall.

NoNoN NoneNone20170209

After a short 30 minute visit to our vet, my wife started the vehicle and had no power steering at all. Restart of the vehicle did not resolve the issue, so she carefully drove the vehicle home 10 miles. Luckily it failed while the vehicle was not in motion. Dealer diagnosis indicated a B3377 fault code (eps motor malfunction), and told me the steering rack needed replacement ($2200).

The front sub-frame has completely rusted out. We live in a salt zone (michigan). There is also visible corrosion throughout the exterior. We were driving and the front passenger wheel started bowing out and we started vibrating. We got to safety before anything happened.

After having a new water coolant pump (the fourth one in my mariner hybrid) and a new throttle body being put into my car by a ford dealership, my car is still having the same problems. Now a "service emission sys" warning has come on, and being under 150,000 miles still i contacted ford to see what could be done since it was "fixed" by them but still has a problem related to the electrical hybrid powertrain, and ford says there is nothing else that can be done, even though it clearly is under the warranty that they created due to the failures of both parts.

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 mercury mariner. While driving approximately 5 mph, the vehicle stalled and the pull over warning indicator illuminated. The vehicle was towed to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the high voltage battery needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The vin was unknown. The approximate failure mileage was 40,000.

My mercury mariner's idler pulley has already broken three times in the past five months. There must be a recall on this vehicle. The car is very good and too strong for that thin bolt in this part. Luckily, the fourth time it happened, the ford dealer didn't charge me for the new part, which also broke off two weeks later. It has also broken two belts already. Trying to solve the issue, i went to metric bolts and nuts, in wakefield, ma, and bought a higher grade hardened steel bolt/screw, and it also broke off a week later. Once again, two days ago, my mechanic put in another hardened steel screw. He added a nut near the bearing, which makes a squeaking noise, but it has not broken yet. I am now afraid to drive it far from home, because i have been towed so many times already. I have researched the internet and realized that it is a constant issue. Some people have reported the occurrence of this issue 17 times in less than a year. It is also the same frequent problem with mazda tribute, ford escape, ford fusion, etc. What does it take for a recall? Help! Help! Help!

The warning lights had come on a few days ago stating to check the brakes. Today, when the engine was started, the message stop safely now came on. This does not tell me anything about what i need to do and how critical this error is. Can i drive it to the repair shop or should i have it towed? What has to be replaced? This car is driven by my son who is an inexperienced driver, so this is a major concern.

NoNoN NoneNone20150607

I was driving down the street, and suddenly, the "stop safely" light came. The engine shut off and the temperature light came on in the dash. I was able to get my car started after about 30-45 seconds. I started driving again, but it shut down again a couple minutes later. It has been occurring intermittently since that day, with today being the most recent. I called ford motors today and was informed that my car is on the recall list. They never sent a letter to me. The representative referred me to the closest dealership in my area, and advised me that any repairs will be free of charge. I don't understand why ford motors would program this vehicle to completely shut down during travel. God forbid if this happens while driving on a highway. This is a very dangerous so called "safety feature", which needs to be discontinued in the future.

After placing the car in drive, when pressing on the accelerator to move the car the pedal would not allow me to depress it. The pedal began to work after stomping down which causes the car to jerk forward suddenly. Again after coming to a stop at the light and making a right hand turn, after releasing the brakes and stepping on the accelerator, the pedal again would not depress until stomped on. This typically happens when the vehicle has been out in the cold and after it has been turned off for an extended time period (overnight).

The truck shuts off when i come to a complete stop. It usually happens when i'm attempting to stop at a yellow light to avoid running the red light. If the truck come from a high rate of speed (45 mph) to (0 mph) it just turn off. I'm afraid someone is going to run into the back of me when the light turn green because the driver expects me to move when the light turn green. I think this is very dangerous for a vehicle to just stop. It has happened about 20 times since 03-29-2014. I was told by two mechanics that it's the torque converter and that there is a recall on the ford escape for this same problem. While attempting to exit a parking lot (driving at less than 5 mph and making a right turn to leave the parking spot), the steering became very hard to turn. Thinking that the engine had shut off, i restarted the engine then i noticed the message in the cluster "service power steering". I drove to the nearest repair shop a few blocks away and they confirmed that the power steering module is bad and will have to be replaced. They estimated repairs would cost about $1200 if they can find a used one. I was less than 5 miles away and continued on home. Parking this vehicle in nyc tight spots without the power steering is quite an undertaking. The wrench display in the cluster and the "service power steering" message has been consistent and has never disappeared once. I took it to my neighborhood ford dealer a few weeks later and they confirmed that i will need "power steering rack and pinion, module and alignment with estimated repairs costing $3850 including taxes. This problem seems similar to those reported by the owners of the 2008 - 2011 ford escape / mercury mariner suvs and identified in the recent ford recalls for power steering issues. *tr

My extensive research, so far, indicates there have not been any recalls for this, what appears to be, widespread, and might i say potentially very dangerous problem. This is serious. After that amount of time, i tried the car again and was able to drive to the next off-ramp (industrial way, benicia, ca). At the stop sign of that off-ramp, the car failed again and i chose to have it towed instead of continue trying to make it work properly. My mariner is a 2006 with only 77,541 miles! My car eventually got to a transmission shop to be fixed, but it was in my research of the problem that i found failing/faulty transmissions to be a very common and known issue for mariners with low mileage (model years of 2005-2011, at least). My complaint is that there should be a recall issued because this is a well known problem. *tr

My son was driving to his work as an emt. I allowed him to use my mariner. Traveling approx 65mph on the 5 freeway south in sunland, he heard the rod go and saw the lights on the dash indicate the engine overheating. He pulled off the 5 freeway and parked wear it was safe and called for help. I had aaa pickup the vehicle and bring it to the mechanic in westlake village ca. They indicated to me that the engine had thrown a rod and would need to be replaced. They thought it might have run out of oil or something else, but bottom line was that the engine was destroyed. They quoted me a price of $15,000 minimum to fix, so i had it towed to my driveway where it has remained since. It wasn't' for 10 months later we would get any indication that something else might have caused this to happen. I last serviced my mariner in march & may of 2013. My new concern putting 2+2 together, is that though the car was due for an oil change, could this catastrophic event have been due to the overheated coolant system that as yet hadn't been recalled? While driving in the los angeles, ca the brake system message came on indicating that the abs feature had shut down and i was left with only basic hydraulic brakes. I took it to the ford dealer and they found a technical bulletin that indicated they need to jump one wire in the system. I had that done and paid for the repair. Several days later the check brake system message came on again. Both times the code reader indicated there was nothing wrong with the vehicle at the ford dealer. The check brake message clears after you turn the vehicle off for a period of time. The vehicle has done this a number of times during the following months including on april 26 and 29. On may 3, 2013 i revisited the dealer and had the system rechecked and they found nothing wrong. They connected the code reader and examined the vehicle and could not find a problem. On may 15, 2013, the check brake message came on and this time i did not turn the vehicle off so the brake system message (check brake system and the buzzer sounding) was on when the mechanic arrived. Again they checked the vehicle and the code reader indicated all systems were fine, even though the message center said there was a problem. The personnel we talked to indicated that this problem has happened to a number of other vehicles and was most likely cause by the wiring harness but could not guarantee that would fix the intermittent problem. The cost to fix this problem was $4000. This in our opinion is a manufacturer defect. The wiring harness hasn't been tampered with and all repairs have been done at a ford dealer. This is a safety issue as the abs failure could cause an accident on slippery roads or during fast stops. *tr

I have a mercury mariner hybrid 2006. Coming up to red light and vehicle suddenly had no brakes, the pedal would not push in either. No lights had ever come on and no warning signs were ever received. The car was in great condition and was regularly taken care of and had preventable maintenance. Upon failure to brake i had to maneuver the vehicle in dangerous conditions just to avoid an accident. Lucky for me this time did not result in an accident or injury. After replacing the master brake cylinder (as per ford recommendations) i again had the same problem. This time, narrowly avoiding crashing into my other vehicle which was in my driveway. This was again, without any notice or warnings. Now, by researching online i find that this problem is existing and mercury / ford will do nothing about it because no serious injury has occurred yet? I can't afford to replace the hcu, so i will be trading in for another type of vehicle...Sad to say. I would have stayed a loyal customer, if not for the sour taste in my mouth. *tr

The engine just shut off completely, no electric drive either. Extremely dangerous condition. This happened twice. Vehicle restarted within a minute and operated normally for about 30 minutes. This is a common problem with the mercury mariner and ford escape versions of this vehicle. There is extensive documentation of this issue here: http://www.Greenhybrid.Com/discuss/f26/stop-safely-now-11900/ apparently, most of these cases are caused by failing cooling pumps. I just don't see how ford could think to program a vehicle to just shut down because a component was overheating? How about a warning light and tone? *tr

I was entering the interstate 430 at the maumelle, arkansas on ramp and began accelerating to merge with rush hour traffic. I noticed that i had accelerated faster than normal...70 mph. I took my foot off the accelerator to slow down, but i didn't slow down. I thought i must have hit the cruise control button, so i hit the off button and brake and slowed slightly...60mph the cruise control was not on. I let off the brake and car began accelerating back up to 65 mph very quickly. By this time, i was entering the interstate 40 on ramp/crystal hill exit in north little rock, arkansas. I realized that my brakes were not slowing my suv and i had to get the car to a stop. I stayed on the crystal hill exit...Pushing on brakes as hard as i could. I only slowed to about 40 or 50 mph. I turned my hazard lights and began edging to the shoulder. So still pushing on my brakes, i put the suv in neutral. I finally stopped about 100 feet from the stop sign at the crystal hill road. When i stopped, i noticed the engine was revving a lot so i put it in park and turned the suv off. I tried to stay calm for me and my baby since i was 35 weeks pregnant. I was lucky that i didn't have to crash the car to stop it or i didn't go into labor, but putting it in neutral worked. My husband had my suv towed to crain ford dealership. On i-66w vehicle lost engine power at highway speed. Displayed stop safely now and master vehicle electrical hazard warning lamp. The incident was extremely harrowing for the driver as the power cutoff was unexpected and immediate. Coasted to shoulder. A restart, per the owner manual, was attempted but did not work. Transported on flatbed to ford dealership. Dealership stated hybrid battery harness, hybrid cooling fans, and throttle body needed to be replaced and pcm reprogrammed for $1900 to 'fix issue. Owner requested a new 12v front battery and warning ceased. Owner decided to do some research and test drive short distances. On 5/24 the engine cut off in an office parking lot. Vehicle was able to be restarted and go 4 miles back to residence after the carpet covering the hybrid battery was pulled up and the cabin a/c turned to high in an effort to cool the battery area (it did not feel hot but the owner believed if a temp reading was the cause a few degrees cooler might help). A wealth of info was found indicating this was a known problem and had multiple ford technical service bulletins issued (09-18-6 sep 09 hybrid systems - red triangle on/dtc P0A27 set'). The owner compiled a list of 88 complaint numbers on the nhtsa site that indicate substantially similar experiences from 2005-2008 ford escape hybrid / mercury mariner hybrid owners. Believe root cause is a design flaw in the pcm s/w that removes engine power when a minor deviation from the nominal battery temp range is sensed. Likely contributing issue is a poorly designed hybrid battery cooling system (battery harness, battery cooling fans, mec pump, blend door, relays). The nhtsa is urged to open an investigation into the stop safely now/master vehicle electrical hazard engine shutdowns. Vehicle is not repaired and can be made available for inspection. *tr

Car would not move at all after coming to a stop when making a left turn in the middle of an busy intersection. With the car idling at 1000 rpms, it would not move when i pressed the accelerator. I had to shut the vehicle down completely, restart it, and then it would move forward only if i pressed the accelerator immediately after restarting. If traffic did not allow immediate travel, the car would not move forward as previously described. If you could not proceed immediately this cycle would continue multiple times. The traffic light turned yellow, i applied the brakes which worked momentarily then released as the brake pedal went all the way to the floorboard. No warning lights illuminated in the instrument panel. Using the emergency brake i stopped short of blocking the intersection. Upon stopping it was determined that on level ground with the vehicle idling in drive and the brake pedal fully depressed there was not enough brake force to keep the vehicle from moving forward. Inspection of the vehicle revealed that the left (driver side) front flexible brake line had ruptured and that there had been a small amount of brake fluid lost from the master cylinder. This line is about 17 inches long with a metal sleeve in the middle where it is attached to the vertical strut for support. The rupture was at the top of this sleeve. While bleeding the brakes after the line was replaced, it was found that the low brake fluid sensor worked. Is this an unknown "safety feature" of abs? If it is, progress has brought us back to where an individual part can cause the same catastrophic failure as before the split system was introduced in the 1960s. I am the original owner of this vehicle. This has been reported to ford motor company. *tr

L/h tone ring on axel cracked and threw an abs warning, brake service warning and 4wd light blinking. At approx 65,000 the r/h tone ring cracked as well but was small enough that it did not trip the sensor. I noticed a clicking sound when turning into parking spaces. This was fixed under my extended warranty. From searches on the internet this seems to be a design flaw of this weak part. Dealers try to get you to replace the entire axel which is not needed as did the ford dealer in margate. Ford should be replacing these tone rings with a part with stronger tensile strength so it does not crack. This needs to be a recall as it will strand many who see all the lights and warnings go off and think they cannot continue driving. This is a poor design, a poorly made part and through it's dealer network a rip-off for customers who are told the entire axel needs replacement. *tr

When the temperature is cold, the accelerator will not allow itself to be depressed after 1-2 minutes of driving, and then for the next 10-15 minutes. Occasionally, tapping on the pedal, or pushing extremely hard will make it move and the vehicle will dangerously and rapidly accelerate due to the excessive force required until the driver is able to adjust the force, which sometimes causes the pedal to become stuck closed again on a high speed road. Over the years, this problem has become progressively worse. It is very dangerous and should be fixed by the manufacturer. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2006 mercury mariner. The passenger side seat warmer automatically activates as soon as the seat belt is applied. The vehicle has been taken to the dealer twice, and they supposedly repaired the failure the first time. Two days later, the failure recurred. When the vehicle was taken back the second time, the dealer replaced a sensor or something to that nature. The repair temporarily corrected the failure for a few months before it recurred. The vehicle is currently in the contact's possession and has not been repaired. The failure mileage was 15,000 and current mileage was 35,000. Updated 07/29/08 *bf updated 08/01/08. *jb

On december 30, 2006 my car stalled and the dash error message referred to a mecp pump. I had that part replaced with an amazon part before the recall, it is also faulty. The safety recall is, 142s19, from ford. Cars stall because of a faulty mecp part. I tried having the part replaced by a ford dealer. The dealer refused and to make matters worse they posted online that they made the replacement. That is a lie. Ford customer tried to get the dealer to cooperate but they told they cannot make a dealer honor a recall. Please help.

I only had my car 4 days when driving on the garden state parkway at approximately 60 mph on a sunday with my grandchildren in the car. Luckily, i was in the slow lane when the suv just shut off. I was able to pull onto the shoulder and restart the car. I was near an exit and proceeded down the ramp. The car again shut off at the bottom on the ramp. The check engine light stayed on. I called the dealer the next day (monday) and brought the car in on tuesday. It is now friday and i still do not have my car. *jb

Ford mercury mariner: at 65 mph i tapped the brake pedal to disconnect the cruise control. Proceeded to press the gas pedal and found the gas pedal cable to the throttle linkage fell off. Coasting through 65 mph traffic with no gas control was challenging. Why did the gas pedal cable fall off and has other vehicles owners experience the same problem? *jb

This complaint regards the 2006 mercury mariner that i am leasing. The vehicle was leased beginning in april, 2006 from holman lincoln-mercury in mt. Laurel, new jersey. My wife, the principal driver of this vehicle complained about the head restraints preventing her from keeping her head straight up while driving. The mariner's head restraints project forward preventing the driver from keeping his/her head straight up while driving. This is very uncomfortable as one's head is bent forward. Sometime in august, i returned to holman and met with mr. David burns, the service manager. He looked at the head restraints and agreed that they projected forward. He and i then looked at all the other mercury mariners on the lot (about 20) and found that all of them had the same restraints. We also checked other model new vehicles on the lot and found that all of the restraints were straight up as one would expect. Mr. Burns then checked to see if ford had any issues with the restraints on the mariner but could not find any. I can only say that when i drive the vehicle, i agree with my wife that the headrest prevents me from driving in a comfortable position. Is this a safety hazard? I would appreciate your looking into this matter and giving me your opinion. *jb

Dt*: the contact stated while driving 25 mph the steering pulled hard to the left and got worse at higher speeds. The vehicle was taken to the dealership for inspection. They aligned the front wheels and elongated the bottom bolt of the strut to the knuckle, however the problem still exists. The manufacturer was alerted. After four attempts to correct the problem, the dealer finally stated that was the way the vehicle was designed. Updated 03/20/06. *jb
