• Recall 119304 [USA]: If the engine oil comes into contact with hot surfaces, it can increase the risk of a vehicle fire.
  Daimler buses north america (dbna) is recalling certain model year 2007-2012 orion vii natural gas-powered transit buses manufactured january 1, 2007, to october 1, 2012. Excessive engine crankcase pressures may cause the 90-degree elbow of the vent tube assembly to detach from the crankcase ventilation breather, possibly allowing engine oil to come into contact with hot surfaces.

In addition, the electronic control module (ecm) will be reprogrammed with software that can adjust the engine output under misfire conditions to limit crankcase pressures.   Daimler bus north america is recalling certain model year 2006 through 2009 orion vii transit buses manufactured from december 2007 through july 2009. The passenger windows have a tip-in transom window which is attached by screws. These screws may loosen and the window may dislodge and fall into the bus.
  an interim notice was sent to owners on october 21, 2009 instructing them to check that the screws are properly tightened and to inspect them periodically. A permanent repair is now available and owners will be provided instructions to repair the buses free of charge. • Recall 84001 [USA]: A short circuit between the seat bus bar and the adjacent terminal connection could overheat the wire, possibly resulting in a fire.
  Daimler bus is recalling 804 my 2006-2009 transit buses equipped with a new york custom seat heater. Currently, the terminal connection of the seat heater is immediately located next to the seat bus bar. Should conductive material or debris, such as a washer, enter between the terminal connection and the seat bus bar, a short circuit could occur.

  On certain 2008-2010 hybrid buses, and 2005-2008 buses converted from lead acid to a li-ion energy storage system (li-ion ess), particulate debris can accumulate and breach the electrical isolation of the high voltage battery pack. A conductive path can be created if the electrical isolation is breached at both ends of the battery, which could result in the unintended discharge of the battery. This could result in a vehicle fire causing property damage and/or personal injury. Correction: bae systems inc. Will install a contactor to break currently flow in cases where the electrical isolation is breached at both ends of the battery. Additionally, the system will be modified to disable li-ion ess operation when a breach of the electrical isolation is detected.

• Falling bus windows investigation # EQ09007

  The purpose of this investigation was to determine whether the tip-in style transom windows supplied to daimler buses for use on buses it manufactured, and concerning which that company made a defect determination, were supplied to any other vehicle manufacturers or as replacement equipment and, if so, to prompt additional safety recalls if and where needed.Rmd issued a request for information to the windows manufacturer, hehr international, inc. (hehr) on september 2, 2009, inquiring about its distribution of the windows and soliciting its opinion as to whether a safety defect existed in those windows.Hehr responded on october 28, 2009, that it had not supplied the windows to anyone other than daimler buses.It also opined that the windows did not contain a safety defect and that any screw loosening, and consequential window collapse, would be due to a failure to properly retighten a screw after maintenance, as opposed to a defect inherent to the design or manufacture of the screws or windows.In support of its opinion, it provided a summary of historical field data and its field inspection investigation, neither of which demonstrated aberrant performance.It also provided a summary of testing conducted by an independent testing facility demonstrating that the screws would not loosen as manufactured. In view of hehrs response and the information provided therein, this investigation is closed.

A port authority owned 2006 orion vi diesel powered airport shuttle bus was destroyed by fire on 6/28/08 at about 12:00 a.M. Fortunately the bus was not carrying passengers at the time, as the fire spread quickly and destroyed the bus even though it was equipped with an on-board fire suppression system that discharged agent into the engine compartment. Following an investigation by a forensic engineer with extensive experience in diesel fires, it was determined that the probable cause of the fire was the wear and shorting of wires from the alternator that were chaffing on the #5 cylinder diesel injector line. Upon removal it was discovered that the line was melted and a hole burned through the steel tube allowing the spraying of high pressure diesel fuel. Upon investigating other buses of the same manufacturing group approximately 15 out of 17 buses displayed at least some wear, and 7 had physical grooving on the injector line. *tr
