  • Recall 67885 [USA]: This condition will permit hot exhaust gases to exit the vehicle tailpipe, increasing the risk of melting or burning of nearby surfaces, or a fire.
Paccar is recalling model year 2008-2010 kenworth t300, t270, and t370, model year 2009-2010 t800 and peterbilt model year 2008-2010 335, 340, and 367 vehicles built on cummins' diesel engine. The vehicles may be designed with a hard wired, dash-mounted switch that enables the vehicle operator to inhibit aftertreatment diesel particulate filter regeneration in environments where the operator believes it may be unsafe for elevated exhaust temperatures. Due to an issue with the logic in the ecm software in these engines, the switch may not function correctly, leading the operator to believe that the switch is in "inhibit" mode when it is not.
paccar is working with cummins to repair the engines free of charge please see 09e-046. The safety recall began on october 1, 2009. Owners may contact cummins at 1-800-diesels (1-800-343-7357).

  • Recall 72329 [USA]: If the double check valve becomes lodged, in the event of a primary reservoir failure, air pressure can leak past the lodged double check valve thereby depleting the secondary reservoir, causing reduced ability for modulating the service emergency brakes. in such an event, the operator should observe an air leak, indications of low air pressure via the primary and secondary air gauges, and audible and visual low air pressure warning alarms. a vehicle crash is possible if these warnings are not heeded.
Paccar is recalling 1,043 my 2008-2009 kenworth c500, t2000,t660, t800 and w900 trucks equipped with bendix mv-3 dash control valves. The molded valve body has an incorrect core pin in the injection mold causing the valve body to be oversized in the double check valve area. This condition can allow the rubber double check valve to become lodged in the body opening under certain circumstances.
dealers will replace the bendix mv-3 dash control valves free of charge. The recall began on april 14, 2008. Owners may contact kenworth at 1-425-828-4196.

  • Recall 2020148 [Canada]: Lights and instruments
Issue: on certain trucks, the warning light for the tractor anti-lock brake system (abs) may not turn on if the system loses power. If this happens, the driver will not get warning that the abs is not working properly. Note: this problem would also cause the traction control (tc) and electronic stability control (esc) lights not to turn on. Safety risk: if a driver is not warned that the abs is not working properly, there could be an increased risk of a crash. Corrective actions: paccar will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your truck to a dealer to update the software for the cab control module (cecu).

  • Recall 2015531 [Canada]: Tires
On certain vehicles equipped with michelin mn 295/60r22.5 xza-2 front tires, the programmed maximum vehicle speed may exceed the speed rating of the tire. This could result in premature tire failure to occur under certain operating conditions (higher speeds, load and road temperature). A tire failure could cause the driver to lose vehicle control, which may result in a crash causing injury and/or property damage. Correction: dealers will reprogram the engine’s vehicle speed parameters to limit the maximum vehicle speed to the tire speed rating.

  • Recall 2009117 [Canada]: Brakes
On certain vehicles, the anchor plate tie bar for the 73mm calipers was inadvertently omitted during vehicle assembly. This could cause a loss or reduction of brake force applied to the affected wheel end. Extended stopping distances may result in a vehicle crash causing property damage, personal injury or death. Correction: dealers will inspect and, if necessary, install an anchor plate tie bar.

Known Recall Investigations
  • Intermittent loss of power steering assist investigation as of 20200501

On may 1, 2020, the office of defects investigation (odi) opened pe20006 to investigate complaints of intermittent loss of power steering assist in daimler truck north america (dtna), volvo trucks of north america (volvo) and paccar vehicles equipped with a zf/trw (trw) thp60 steering gear.  the investigation focused on 2010-2020 dtna freightliner cascadia, m2 and wst; volvo vn, vah and vhd and paccar 337, 365, 389, 567, 579 model vehicles.Field reports and interviews with fleet drivers allege that high power steering fluid temperatures could result in internal seal and bearing failures causing pressure fluctuation, affecting left and right-hand turns.  the inability of the driver to steer the vehicle as intended can increase the risk of a crash and injury. Odi analyzed data provided by trw, dtna, volvo, and paccar in response to individual information request letters.Odi found that most failures occurred within the first two years and/or 50,000 miles of service.  the claim rate decreased with time and miles in service and remained less than 0.5%. Odi normalized data from each of the manufacturers and determined that there was not a substantial difference in the failures.Additionally, trw improved a seal in the steering gear in december 2015.Trucks built on or after 2016 (as 2017 and newer model years) show a decreasing trend of failures. In view of the overall low failure rate, the nature of early-life failure, and failure rate trending downward for model years 2017 and newer, this preliminary evaluation (pe) is closed.  the closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by nhtsa that a safety-related defect does not exist. The agency reserves the right to take additional action if warranted by future circumstances.
