Known Recall Investigations
  • Driver air bag clockspring failure investigation # EA04013

The driver air bag clockspring can develop an open-circuit condition resulting in nonfunctional driver-side frontal air bag, horn, cruise control (if equipped), and/or steering wheel radio control (if equipped). In its october 5, 2004 letter to nhtsa, daimlerchrysler stated that it will conduct a safety recall and replace the clockspring assembly on all my 1998.5-2000 daimlerchrysler minivans, built between march 1998 and august 2000, with 70,000 miles or less.It will also provide a lifetime warranty for this component on my 1998.5-2000 minivans, regardless of mileage. The details of the corrective action are described in daimlerchryslers letter (see recall no. 04v-480).The agency believes that further expenditure of agency resources does not appear to be warranted. The closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by nhtsa that no safety-related defect exists with respect to those vehicles covered only by the lifetime warranty. The agency will take further action if warranted by the circumstances.See page 2 for additional information.

Federal super steel tire 657, on the right rear, blew out at 70 miles an hour on the interstate, tread came apart, causing the van to spin around twice, into the median backwards, and smashed into the guardwire and support post. Broke the rear bumper, crushed in the tailgate, broke a tail light and crushed the metal below both tail lights. My wife and daughter were in the car at the time. Tire had 30,000 miles on it, rotated as required and air pressure checked on all 4 tires in the morning of the day of the accident. Tire had only been on the car a year, but date of manufacture was 08 2004. Blacks tire sold and installed the tire, wouldn't do crap about it, charged almost full price (pro rated, they claim), and tire manufacturer won't even comment or do anything about it.

I've purchased a 1999 grand voyager and noticed that the driver side strut tower was rotting out and the passenger side was starting to rust as well , but not to the degree as the drivers side.. I looked up and found no recall this situation, but was informed that chrysler ,plymouth , dodge , knew about this since 1996 but did nothing to correct it until 2001. I enjoy my vehicle but the repairs for this problem are a bit too much for me at this time due to my disability ,and the fact that i am on a very limited income. Is there any one that can assist me in getting my vehicle repair? *tr

While driving along at approximately 65 mph the gas gauge suddenly went from 1/4 to zero. In addition the tachometer went to zero , the temp gauge went to the off gauge and the speedometer went to 120 and stayed there. The abs light also came on and stayed there. This is a major safety defect and my research reveals that it is a known problem and due to poor cold solder joints on the instrument cluster circuit board. Multiple vehicle owners have reported this problem and many people have paid for repairs that they should not have had to pay for because of a defective printed circuit board problem. If the problem has been in existence since production it seems reasonable that the problem should be fixed at no cost to the vehicle owner. Not knowing vehicle speed, fuel level, engine temp is a major hazard and an accident waiting to happen. *tr

There was a recall on this vehicle. I took it to a local dealer to be fixed. Had classic "no airbag, no horn, no cruise" symptoms. Dealer replaced airbag clockspring, but did not fix the problem of "no airbag". The dealer's stance is "we don't troubleshoot, we only replaced the part." they let the vehicle leave their service department in an unsafe condition without notifying the customer of an issue, which was only discovered after the vehicle was picked up. Dealer refuses to replace clockspring, and insists on a diagnostic fee to troubleshoot an issue that i have already diagnosed myself. I ended up having to obtain a replacement clockspring on my own, and fit it to the vehicle. The airbag, horn, and cruise control now work on the vehicle. Chrysler refuses to do anything about it. *tr
