Tl* the contact owns a 1998 plymouth neon. The contact stated that the speedometer failed and would not display the speed being traveled. Car has 36,000 miles on it and oil started running out underneath the car. Took car to dealer and the head gasket was blown. This is a known problem and chrysler has yet to correct it. Upon further investigation i have found that i will have this problem again since it is a defect from the manufacturer. I was told from mechanic that several other cars the heads are also affected by this problem. *tr

The strut on the driver side rear rattles. It rubs when i make right turns. I have only changed the struts in the rear and a wheel bearing on the driver side rear and it is still doing it. *tr

The dealer told the consumers mother there was nothing wrong with the vehicle and that was just the way the vehicle sounded. The consumer stated the vehicle has 54,000 miles and with such low mileage, the vehicles engine rod is about to fail. The problem with the motor was that the oil pressure sender mounted on the rear of the motor leaked. The leak was normally small and only leaked when the vehicle was in motion. However, over time, the leaking caused excessive heat to the motor which caused wear and tear on the head gaskets, pistons and rods. *jb

A 1990 chevy impala turned left in front of my son while he was driving my car, he was going 30 mph he hit the other car in the b pillar, both side doors with the front of my car. Neither air bag was deployed on my car. The passenger door would not open due to the fender being jammed back into the door. The bumper is dangling about 4-5 inches from where it should be. The passenger and driver injured their knees on the dash when they slid forward from the impact. The seat belts held. *nm

I have a 1998 plymouth neon. I am angry with the way these cars were built from chrysler. It is unacceptable that my headlights continue to get foggier and foggier. I take normal care of my car to include keeping it clean and mechanically sound. I have a real safety issue with these lights becoming so cloudy. It is almost as though i have dim lights due to this clouding of the headlight lenses. I insist that a recall should be instated in order to fix this problem for each and every neon from 1998 for sure. This is a problem when driving and either the fog lights have to be on or your brights just to make sure you don't hit anything or anyone. Why should we have to replace something with our own money when it was a quite obvious problem on chrysler's end? Please let me know what i should do. *nm

Head gasket failure at 37500 miles ( 2001) head gasket failure at (83125 miles) resulting in oil contamination/check engine light problem/spark plug fouling. Rear oil seal failure ( started at 55125 miles)- $ 2000 repair bill to replace head gasket and rear oil seal at 83125 miles.

On my 1998 plymouth neon the fuel filler tube rusted away (i was able to see daylight when filling up with gas). The rust/road debris/water went into the fuel tank and was not prevented from going into the fuel rail & injectors causing the car to constantly stumble and display the "service engine soon" warning lite.

Took my 98 neon with 42,000 miles into local chrysler dealership for an oil leak. They said that the head gasket needed to be replaced for a total of $1050. It is my opinion that: - the head gasket failure is not due to my own negligence, but an inherent design flaw. - the inferior head gaskets shipped in these cars pose a slight safety risk to consumers because it directly leads to oil leakage. - a large percentage, if not all first generation neons, are affected by this problem. *la

Consumer noticed that the brake lights burned out continuously. Vehicle was taken to the dealer for inspection, and mechanic determined that the brake lights needed to be replaced, and replaced them. However, the problem recurred. Vehicle was taken back to the dealer for inspection. Mechanic could not duplicate the problem. *ak

Passenger's side airbag cracked. Consumer contacted manufacturer and was told that she would have to pay for repairs. Consumer stated that if the air bag suddenly deployed she was afraid it will harm her daughter.*ak the heat from the sun warped the dash board. *tc

Fuel tank replaced then car does not start in the morning and end of day. Chrysler and dealer have washed their hands of it. *mr

Upon having an oil change mechanic noticed that engine head gasket was leaking oil, and needed to be replaced. Also, mechanic indicated that this was a common problem with this model.*ak

I own a 1998 neon that had to be towed back to the dealer within the first 2 weeks of owning it because of an oil leak which they "fixed a gasket" then in november of 2001 had my head gasket replaced and now again november 2003 i need another head gasket. *ak

My car leaks water. My trunk leaks and the rear floor leaks on both sides. What is causing this it has done this since i have had the car but it has gotten worse. I have also replaced the engine at 36000 miles.*ak

I bought the car and had great mileage for about 4 months. Now i get less than someone who owns a chevy camero that is 3 years older than my car. At 53,000 miles the head gasket on my 1998 plymouth neon failed. The repair cost approximately $700 and had to be made on an urgent basis by a certified non-dealer repair facility. This vehicle has a known history of this failure and a service bulletin was issued on sept. 8, 1999. The company has declined financial participation in the repair of this vehicle. As a known problem, i believe the company should bear the financial burden of this repair and issue a recall.*jb

Leaking oil out of rear seals.

I have a 1998 plymouth neon. The roof of my car began peeling over a year ago, and has rapidly spread and now has rust developing. I have noticed several other neons in my area with similar peeling problems. I have contacted crysler and the refuse to help since the warranty on the paint is 3 years/36,000 miles. I think that is ridiculous. Paint on a car should last much, much longer than 3 years.*ak

While driving the vehicle, vehicle started to run hot. Consumer cut off engine and vehicle was towed to dealer. Dealer states the head gasket will be replaced. Ts the mechanic stated that this is a common problem in these vehicles. Scc

Was driving my 3 grand children when the temperature bell rang. I glanced at my gauges and noticed a high temperature reading and immediately pulled off to the side of the road and turned off the engine. After waiting 30 minutes or so i released the radiator cap and noticed what looked like oil in the water. I added water and then drove home at a slow rate of speed with the heater on. The temperature gauge did not go above low-med. I called my local garage and explained the problem and they suggested i have the vehicle towed to them. This i did, and upon examination the concluded the head gasket had blown. This vehicle only had 87,000 miles on it at the time of the failure. Upon research i see that this is not a new problem or isolated problem for the '98 neon. I will now contact the dealer any advise? Has chrysler stepped forward and dealt with this problem? Dt

These problems were found during a replacement of our third transmission. We are really upset with plymouth/dodge auto. We had this car for only a year and it has been nothing but trouble. Like i said, 3 transmissions, 1 engine due to head gasket problems. Original owner, 24286 original miles. No previous major problems. Was told by dealer that problem had to do with "age" of vehicle and "dry rot". This vehicle is used on a daily basis by a 82 year old woman who still has loan payments to make on it. She has kept up with all scheduled maintenance, and feels she is being taken advantage of. Checking the internet has shown numerous incedences of similar head gasket complaints on these cars, but no official recall to date that we know of. Independent mechanic has stated he is aware of a change in the type of gasket used, due to chrysler's being aware of the problem. I recently have learned that the headgasket is a problem that comes with all neons and i was wondering why it hasn't been recalled if it is a known manufacturers defect and because a broken head gasket can cause your car to overheat, which is a fire hazard.*ak

While traveling on the highway, the engine check light appeared on the dashboard and it was discovered that the vehicle was leaking gasoline, the manufacturer is aware of the problem. *ak the consumer was told that the leak was from the head being warped and pitted due to the type of head use on the vehicle, the dealer was unable resurface it. While accelerating from a stop, heading east, another vehicle driving approximately 45 mph, heading north, crashed into front of consumer's car. Both frontal air bags failed to deploy during this crash, and there were no injuries to report. Vehicle has not been examined to determine a cause for problem with air bags. On several occassions we took vehical to the dealer and was told everything is fine just replace your brakes. After constently being sent away by the dealer, we eventually took the car to another mechanic and found out all kinds of problems: blown head gasket, replace the brakes (again), calipers drifting to one side, etc. My warranty just expired, but i think it should still be honored since the problems could have been fixed a long time ago.*ak

Initially, i went in to the dealer for a new battery six months after i had bought the car, only to find out that there were numerous parts that needed to be repaired. Among those, the most expensive and most surprising was the engine oil leak. I was told that the cylinder head gasket was leaking motor oil, and that it was imperative that it be fixed as soon as possible. As a student, $670 for the head gasket was an extraordinary amount to invest. The advisor at the dealer informed me that the model of the car inherently contained a poorly designed engine, which was cause to the matter. He also mentioned that he wondered why the manufacturer had not conducted a recall. I did not know that the consumer could place a complaint for a possible recall, and was only advised to contact chrysler (not moss motors) by a telephone follow-up few weeks after. If indeed the engine is at fault, i strongly urge a recall to be made. Thank you for your support.*ak

When brake is pushed the turn lights would light up and brake lights wouldn't brighten. This was (08/13/01). In 10/10/01 was able to drive forward in reverse and neutral, didn't have a reverse, transmission replaced. In 03/12/02, found oil in the antifreeze reserve and radiator, replaced engine due to head gasket problem. In 04/15/02, transmission doing the same thing back on 10/10/01 , transmission is replaced again. In 10/31/02, transmission replaced for the third time, due to shifting hard, and same problem as 10/10/01 and 04/18/02. Also, at the same time the speed sensor went out so there was no speedometer working. The headgaskets on the neons model years 95-99 go out continuously and diamler chrysler will on pay to fix those they want too. I found out they pay for some people to fix their car but not others, especially those that wont take it to a dodge dealer. I cant take my vehicle to anywhere but where i purchased the vehicle because of my warranty. The ac also continuously goes out. *ak

While driving on the freeway, vehicle slipped out of gear and the and the engine began shaking, consumer was informed that the engine mounts had fractured.*et

Started transmission problems june 2001. Car slips out of gear while driving! Valve head replaced. One week later stall and gear slip at stop sign. Main gasket replaced. 3 weeks later another stall and gear slip. Dealership tell me that nothing is wrong with car. Mid oct. 2001 engine became loose on freeway. Got local mechanic to install new engine mounts. Nov. 13th service mgr at barwick motors in california drove with me. Admitted that i had transmission problems and that barwick automotive would get my car working. One hour later he phoned to say that there was nothing wrong with car! This car is dangerous. Consumer noticed a month ago that engine was leaking. A mechanic recommended to consumer to take vehicle to a dealership. Head gasket was blown, and dealer stated they will not provide any assistance to consumer.*ak

I have owned my car for only 2 years and 7 months. I bought a new car so i would not have to go through all these problems. My warranty has expired but i feel that chrysler isn't dealing with known issues that are a direct result of there own design flaws. I was given the goodwill warranty for my head gasket but was required to copay 250 dollars. My request to have my a/c fixed was denied even though there are documented warranties for other models with similar problems. My car is less than three years old and i shouldn't be having these types of problem and it wouldn't be bad if chrysler would just take some ownership for there known but "secret" defects. I just want my car to work like a normal 2 and a half year old car and for chrysler to stop pushing the problems off on the fact that our warranty has run out. The just don't seem to care. *ak

I had a slow speed accident in my 1998 plymouth neon. I was in a parking lot and only going 5 mph. The other car hit my left front fender. My strut is broken & various other parts of the suspension, including the axel. I can't understand how this could happen in a slow speed accident. Junk!!! The computer system has now failed on my car. I have already had 2 major transmission repairs on this vechile. An oil leak which caused replacement of the head gaskets due to the fact they were faulty according to the dealership. The power train control module went out. This car has been nothing but problems and i would not recommed anyone to purchase a neon. I reported the computer failure to chrysler and they "noted" it in a file. I feel as if they should be held responsible for this. Computer systems on a car are not meant to just quit at 75,000 miles. This repair is going to cost me over $1000.00 to fix and i don't feel as if i should have to pay for this. Apparently this is a defect of some sort and this problem should be addressed. My car is still driveable on days--but when i make a right hand turn and my car cuts off i'm not only endangering myself but others behind me. I feel this is a major problem and could seriously injure people. I feel chrysler should have taken more time with me and heard my problem and help me resolve this issue immediately because someone, real soon, will be hurt driving this death trap of a car that i have purchased. Factory installed head gasket failed causing a major oil leak. Requires costly replacement with newly redesigned multi layer steel gasket as specified in chrysler tsb 09-05-98.*ak

Power steering would lock up intermittently when driving over a water puddle. Also, vehicle experienced problem with oil leakages due to a head gasket failure. Noticed oil stain on garage floor and took car to mechanic who put it on a lift and determined visually that there exists an oil leak at head gasket. Advised me to take car to dealer for repair. His computer search indicated that this was a problem with 1998 neons and it should be covered under warranty. My 3 year warranty expired 10/30/2000. I called dealer and arranged for appointment on monday 01/22/2001 and hope this will be repaired under warranty since it is a common problem. Informing you for the record of existing problem.

While traveling at 70 mph on freeway, lost feeling in steering, dealer found that engine mounts were loose, dealer replaced engine mounts. *tt

The neon was misfireing, replaced plugs two different times within 2 months, gas millage rotten took to dealer, they replaced the oxygen sensor, still having trouble, the car was in 3 times for that problem. For the past 1 1/2 months the vehicle has been loosing oil, leaving puddles all over, have put in 6 qts. Of oil on my own in the past 1 1/2 months, plus had a complete oil change. Found out the head gasket is bad, chrysler says they have not hurd of any other neons with this trouble. Tormohlens (dealer) also says there have been no other neons with this trouble. Contacted other repair shops, was told this is a reaccuring problem with the neons. Dealer offered to do it if chrysler pay part, and then i have to pay $200.00 deductable. If this is a known problem with neons there should not be any cost. This is a problem that should be recalled if there are that many neons with this problem. Will not fix at this time, not paying for. Attorney contacted. *ak

Upon completion of other repairs to accident damage we discovered an oil leak, which we were told was unrelated to the accident, and was a head gasket failure. After investigating we learned that this is a very common problem in neons. *ak

Last summer the head gasket on our car failed just before the warranty was out. We were advised at that time that this was a known problem to chrysler and that they would be installing a redesigned gasket. "shouldn't ever have this problem again." in december 2000 i was on the freeway when the car over-heated. The head gasket had once again blown on the vehicle. The dealership refused to admit there was a problem and "generously" offered to split the bill with us 50/50. We paid a $1,200 bill to have it fixed six months after the first incident. Here it is 8 weeks later and we have blown the head gasket for a third time. I'm meeting with them tomorrow at the dealership and i'm sure i'll have to fight with them again. Given from the information i've found on the internet this is a known problem with them. I feel that in addition to fixing my car at no charge this time they need to refund my payment from december. How do we proceed with this?

Blown head gasket and cracked head. Mechanic says will happen again in about a year as well he says it is a reaccuring problem for the neons.

Was driving approximately 75mph when a deer jumped in front of vehicle. Upon impact with deer, air bags failed to deploy. Vehicle towed to body shop. While driving in the rain and making a right turn, the steering wheel will lock up which may cause a crash. Dlr cannot determine the problem. Problem happen 3xs. *ak

Head gasket blew on 1998 neon. Did not notice until oil dumped all over garage floor. Luckily repaired for free, but this is a widespread problem on neons. Chrysler should make repairs for free up to 100,000 miles because it is a design defect. There are 108 posts in the bad neon head gasket discussion group on the internet. Supposedly there is a "secret warranty" out on this problem, but chrysler applies it inconsistently. I do not have the vin because i just traded it last week, but still concerned because i bought another '98 neon on 1/28/01. *ak

Consumer took car to mechanic at sears for a routine oil check, and mechanic told consumer that there was an oil leak and a transmission leak. *ak

Back brakes are not working properly. Stopping distance has increased. Also, there is a loud squeaking noise that happens when applying the brakes. Contacted dealer. *ak

This car is the worst. I have lost more wages from missing work due to the failure of this vehicle. I am going to be contacting my attorney for lemon laws in our state. No one at the dealership even wants to deal with me or my problems with my car. Is it too much to ask for reasons why certain "fixed" things seem to always be breaking down? Leaking oil at 30500 miles, still under extended warranty. Was repaired by dealership. At 72000 miles, engine is leaking oil again. Took to independant contractor, has been confirmed that the head casket is now leaking in two places. Am taking auto to shop and service manager offered to fix with me to pay a $200 "deductible". Please advise if you have any additional information as to a recall or anything manufacturer is doing to correct this issue. Chrysler customer service says they aren't aware of any kind of head casket problems with neons. That's funny how come everyone else in the free world knows of the neon's casket problems? Dt

While driving about 40 to 45 mph, consumer hit a gravel causing vehicle to slid and hit a guardrail. Upon impact, the airbag's experienced no deployment, but no injuries were sustained. *yc

While driving 70 mph the occupant fell asleep, the vehicle went on the wrong side of the street and had a roll over which it roll over in the front of the vehicle when the driver and passenger airbag should of deploy but it did not deploy and did not protect the occupant. Please provide further information.

The transmission problem does not seem to affect the handling of the car. The noise occurs after the car is completely warmed up, whether the car is moving or stopped and is heard when the car is in or out of drive. It is a grinding noise. The air bags did not deploy in a collision. The dealership advises that i 'just go buy a battery.' i think it is unreasonable for a car to have these problems after two years, although the mileage is high, these are not hard miles in my opinion. *ak

When turning corners steering wheel will lock up, cannot move steering wheel for at least 30 seconds, causing a loss of control,which almost resulted in an accident. Dealer cannot determine defect. *ak
