(NUMMI) , a joint venture between Toyota and GM . Toyota has decided that a defect, which relates to motor vehicle safety, exists in certain 2003 and 2004 model yea r Pontiac Vibe vehicles. As a result, GM is conducting a safety recall . These veh icles are equipped with a front passenger airbag inflator which could have been assembled with improperly manufactured propellant wafers. Improperly manufactured propellant wafers could cause the inflator to rupture and the front passenger airbag to deploy abnormally in the event of a crash, increasing the risk of injury to the occupant. To correct this condition , dealers will inspect and, if necessary, replace the front passenger airbag inflater. There are approximately 84,000 U. S. vehicles involved and GM is working with Toyota to obtain the needed parts. The attached letter is bei ng mailed to involved customers today to inform them of this safety recall and that the required repair will be performed at no charge. The letter also advises that when parts are available , they will receive another letter instructing them to contact their dealer to arrange a service appointment for this repair. The Investigate Vehicle History screen in the Global Warranty Management system will not be updated until the recall bulletin is released. Please do not call GM Technical Assistance.
