WHINING NOISE FROM REAR DIFFERENTIAL
APPLICABLE MODEL(S)NINS
2006-2013 MX-5 vehicles with VINs lower than JM1 NC******233232 (produced before May 29, 2013)
DESCRIPTION
Some vehicles may exhibit a whining noise from the rear differential when driving .
The concern may be caused by improper tooth contact pattern of the rear differential gear from abnormal wear.
This abnormal wear is caused by gear tooth lapping compound (used during the production) being left on
beyond the allowable amount. The production control has been improved to reduce the amount of remaining
lapping compound.
Customers having this concern should have their vehicle repaired using the following repair procedure.
REPAIR PROCEDURE
1. Verify customer concern .
2. Replace the rear differential with a new one. Refer to MS3 online instructions or Workshop Manual section
03-14 .
3. Verify repair.
