Failed passenger seat sensor diagnosed by local mazda dealership - parts and labor not covered under warranty due to age of car. Parts/labor exceed $1600 for the repair. This particular vehicle is under 60k miles, and rarely has a passenger-seat occupant (so very little stress/wear on the seat) and has had no physical or water damage to the car. I believe this is a similar scenario to the gm sky/solstice vehicles - where a low volume specialty vehicle does not garner the attention. Reviewing mazda forums shows that this defect is not uncommon, and should be researched on a problems per hundred units basis. My guess is that the pphu would exceed that of other vehicles recalled for similar issues.

Airbag warning light shows code 22 on intermittent basis not repeated during multiple dealer visits. Critical safety systems, such as airbags, must be made to be reliable. Dealer indicates mazda does not cover parts or labor to repair, or provide assurance that other components of the srs will not need repair also. 20.000 to 45,000 miles on odometer since this first arose. Ignition switch function also a potential cause for warning light to trigger.

The airbag warning light came on. I took the car to the dealer, dyer mazda in vero beach, fl. The dealer told me the airbag may or may not deploy in the event of a crash. They said i needed a passenger weight sensor, a passenger seat track adjuster, and an sas unit. Approximately $2,000 just for the parts. I called the manufacturer, mazda, and after review, the manufacturer concurred that the airbag may or may not deploy unless these 3 parts were replaced. Mazda agreed to pay for the labor only, $650, but i would be responsible for the $2,000 in parts. My car is in excellent condition, only 11,752 miles on it. There was never any damage to the parts - impact, water or otherwise. Since all 3 parts are required for the airbag to work properly, i feel mazda should cover the cost of the parts - not just the labor. This is a huge safety issue. Mazda oem parts are only warranted for 12 months or 12000 miles. Since these parts are directly related to the safety of the car, i feel these parts should have a much longer warranty - such as 100,000 miles - like a powertrain warranty. I have researched this issue extensively on the internet - specifically in mazda owner forums. This is not a new issue for mazda. They have known about it for years. Since the failure of this part can be responsible for driver death or serious injury, i believe mazda should be held responsible for their product working properly for more than 12 months or 12,000 miles. Another concern i have is that if the passenger side sensor airbag system can fail, then the driver side system can also fail. If both systems fail, the owner is responsible for over $5,000 in repairs. I would appreciate anything you can do to assist me to encourage mazda to stand by their safety products and replace them if they fail. Thank you. *tr

I first noticed the floor under my drivers seat in the back was soaked. I took it to a mazda dealer immediately and was told that the drainage system was probably backed up with debris causing the water to back up inside the car and it would cost approx. $700.00. It seemed to happen when my car was exposed to heavy rain. Also whenever i went to a car wash. The problem seemed to have gotten worse and i came home to find the inside of my car filled with water in the back and the front under the driver's and passenger seats. This problem can lead to a more serious problem if not fixed immediately because eventually rusting will occur under the carpeting which could be a potential danger to me as the driver. I do not feel safe driving this car with this recurring water problem. I have asked around as to how to fix this problem and have had no resolution with mazda. I do not feel that this is a normal wear and tear issue but more one of a manufacturing flaw. When i spend thousands of dollars on a sport car i do not expect for a problem such as this to occur and then not be dealt with expediency. If the flooring rots from rust, my seat could fall through while i'm driving. I would like this to go on record now as i am still getting no resolution. I don't think this is something that i should have to pay out of pocket to get fixed. *tr

The passenger airbag disabled dash light remains on when the passenger seat is pushed to the rear with no one in the seat. The passenger seat belt unbuckled warning light is also lit even though no one is in the seat. Both lights turn off when the empty seat is moved forward. I am unsure if the air bag will deploy if needed. A mazda dealer told me they had seen the problem before in other vehicles and there are discussions on the internet about the problem in other cars. The dealer diagnosed my car and told me it could be one of two parts but they could not be sure which part caused the problems. All they could suggest was replacing one part and then the other part if the problem persisted. The parts are the seat weight sensor ($1281.03) and the seat weight control ($523). The car has never been wrecked and nothing has been modified or altered on the airbag or seat belt system. The problems began several months ago and the lights will not go off now when there is no passenger unless the seat is moved forward. I am concerned that the airbag system is compromised and mazda offers no help other than to gamble on replacing two very expensive parts which should not cause problems during normal use of the vehicle. I have contacted mazda by email but they have not responded to my inquiries. The company did not offer to help the dealer resolve the problem other than to suggest that i pay for the two expensive parts that were suspected of being the problem.

Approximately, one month ago, i began to experience water accumulation on the driver's side of my vehicle. This happened every time there was any kind of rain, and i left the vehicle outside. After a particularly hard rain on february 17, 2012 in my area, the next morning there was approximately a 6 inch accumulation of water in the driver's side of my vehicle.I took my vehicle to a local mazda dealer. I drove the vehicle to roger beasley mazda, 6825 burnet rd, austin, tx 78752 and spoke with their lead service technician. He looked at the water inside my car and told me " i have seen this problem too many times and the problem is with drain holes on each side of the convertible top that get clogged with debris". I asked how debris got into the drains, and he said it was leaves, and other debris from rain. Instead of this debris filtering off the vehicle, the debris accumulates in the drains and causes them to clog, and then reverts the excess water to the interior of the vehicle. This would appear to be a design defect. Now, my car has wet carpet throughout the driver's side of the car, and all the excess moisture has accumulated and caused the convertible top to be moldy on the inside. I simply do not feel as though i should have to pay for damage to the vehicle that is clearly a design defect and clearly something that this lead service technician has recognized over several model years of this make of mazda vehicle. *tr

Airbag dashboard light flashing indicating system malfunction. Have read online forums of others having same issue, but various dealers have not been able to correct. *tr

Transmission is very difficult and sometimes will not go into 2nd gear on the first few attempts. It has done this since the car was new and now it seems to be getting worse. Problem is more evident when it is cold out. While pulling into traffic on multiple occasions it has left me trying to put it into gear with cars coming up behind me. It could cause an accident. Many owners have experienced this same problem and mazda has not yet come up with a solution for the problem. *tr

Check engine light comes on every few weeks, various obd codes: P0455, P2402, P2407. This model has a know emission control system problem. Selling dealer replaced filler cap twice and a purge valve before the dealership closed. Some filler pipes are known to be defective. Other dealers are not interested without charging 3 figure amounts for 'diagnosis. I have complained to mazda, they refer me to a dealer, dealer wants big bucks to 'diagnose' a known defect which i'm not willing to pay. I just want the defective car fixed. It has 28,000 miles on it, and the check engine light has been on perhaps 50 times. I also complained to the selling dealer about the clutch being hard to disengage, and was told "it was normal." i find today there is a service bulletin on that same issue.
