Subject: Bulletin No: 03-002/16 Last Issued: 03/17/2016 WHINING NOISE FROM REAR DIFFERENTIAL 2006-2013 MX-5 - WHINING NOISE FROM REAR DIFFERENTIAL BULLETIN NOTE This bulletin supersedes the previously issued bulletin(s) listed below. The changes are noted below in Red beside the change bars. Previously Issued TSBs: Date(s) Issued 03-004/14 09/09/14 APPLICABLE MODEL(S)/VINS 2006-2013 MX-5 vehicles with VINs lower than JM1NC******233232 (produced before May 29, 2013) DESCRIPTION Some vehicles may exhibit a whining noise from the rear differential when driving. The concern may be caused by improper tooth contact pattern of the rear differential gear from abnormal wear. This abnormal wear is caused by gear tooth lapping compound (used during the production) being left on beyond the allowable amount. The production control has been improved to reduce the amount of remaining lapping compound. Customers having this concern should have their vehicle repaired using the following repair procedure. REPAIR PROCEDURE 1. Verify customer concern. 2. Contact MASH at 888 832-8477, option 2, to obtain authorization to replace the rear differential component. Refer to MS3 online instructions or Workshop Manual section 03-14. 3. Verify repair.
