PRELIMINARY INFORMATION
Subject:
Whistle Noise Heard from Engine Compartment, Rough Idle and/or DTC P0171 Set
Models:
2011-2012 Chevrolet Cruze
Equipped with 1.4L Engine (RPO LUJ)
This PI has been revised to add an Important statement in the Recommendation/Instructions
and update the Labor Operation to the Global Labor Code (GLC). Please discard PI0850.
Condition/Concern
Some customers may comment on a whistle noise heard from the engine compartment and/or the vehicle runs rough
with the service engine light on.
This may be caused by a vacuum leak in the positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) located on the camshaft cover.
Recommendation/Instructions
Important: Before proceeding, check the latest version of PIP5197 to verify this fault was not the cause of the cam
cover PCV diaphragm rupturing.

Note: The old style camshaft cover has a taller design PCV cap as shown in the illustration above.

Note: The new design camshaft cover has a flatter/lower cap as shown in the illustration above.
With the engine running using your finger, place it over the breather port of the PCV diaphragm to see if the whistle
noise goes away and/or the fuel trims are high then return to normal levels.
If the noise goes away, replace the camshaft cover and clear the DTC.
