P0171

System too Lean (Bank 1)

DTC P0171, sometimes indicated as P017100 is an OBD diagnostic trouble code indicating a generic fault with the vehicle powertrain (i.e. engine and gearbox). This code identifies an error with the air/fuel mixture causing system too lean (bank 1).

A lean fuel system means that there is too little fuel in the air/fuel mixture. This can be caused by a number of things, including a clogged air filter, a misfiring cylinder, or a leak in the fuel system.
If your car is experiencing a lean fuel system problem, you may see one or more of the following symptoms:
-Check engine light is on
-Vehicle is running rough
-Poor fuel economy
-Hesitation or stumbling when accelerating
If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, you should have your car inspected by a qualified mechanic as soon as possible. The cause of the lean fuel system problem will need to be identified and fixed in order to resolve the issue.

Nissan dealership service diagnosed air flow meter failure - engine light on P0171 b1 fuel lean. Event happened at same time as when the crank sensor and ecm case recall work done except dealership claims separate - not part of covered recall work. Auto only has 64,889 miles and dealership claims engine trouble and repair over $600. Nissan dealership stated toyota slaes dealership should have noticed this during claimed 160 point inspection, as could not have happended in short time of my ownership. Toyota dealership who sold it also did not repair or disclose wheel recall and owner, in just one year of ownership, had to replace three flat/damaged and irrepairable tires as a result, out-of-pocket. Now for nissan to diagnose engine air flow meter failure at same time as other engine recalls is just too ironic timing. Believe should be part of these same related or another recall.*ak

P0171 P0505 P117B P0441 P0455 . Fuel/air mixture is lean . And i hear the fuel pump making that noise that indicates a bad fuel pump. It's when i put the key in i hear it loud enough and if i turn the key on it does it again. When i put it on p it revs and rpm goes up and then comes down, up again down again ... When stopped at a red light the car wants to move and rpm keeps shaking.

Ongoing issues with my fuel system. Car will display one of these many symptoms: -misfire, hard start, stall or shutoff. Other symptoms include car stuttering and stalling out while driving. This last symptom is very dangerous as it often comes with no warning. When the car stalls out, the car is driving up straight up a medium grade hill. I have experienced this on several different dates and times along w 24th st. Austin, tx near 1106 w 24th st. This will happen if i'm either stopping at a light or while in motion. I don't have the exact mph i am driving, but it would be around 20 - 40 mph when this occurs. Ive taken the care to both round rock Toyota and christian auto brothers to address the issue. So far, neither have been able to diagnose the problem. On 5/22/20, christian auto brothers replaced the evaporative emissions system leak detection unit r&r, the fuel evaporative canister r&r, the evaporative emissions system leak detection pump, and the vapor canister purge solenoid. This did not resolve the issue. Current codes: P0441, P0455, P1604, P1605, P0171. While no diagnostic proof has been established, it is hypothesized by the mechanics that there is an issue with either the fuel pump or the fuel line. After reading about the 2020 Toyota fuel pump recall, i believe my 2015 Rav4 has been experiencing similar issues. However, it is not part of the recall. Therefore i am submitting this incident info to document the current situation. If i learn more, i will try to update.

2014 JEEP COMPASS with 67785.0 miles

On march 4, while vehicle was in warm-up phase at home, in idle, a sharp snap was heard (later discovered was the electronic throttle body), then vehicle set two codes (P0171, P2173), and immediately went into limp mode (traction control off, throttle body reduced power, abs for slowing vehicle if being driven above slower speeds for limp mode). We were on a schedule, so vehicle was shut off immediately and we used our other vehicle for transport. Both codes were researched to determine best repair methods. Since the P0171 was a repeat code, and the P2173 was an unfamiliar sae code not normally used on my previous vehicles, a complete disassembly of the intake was warranted. I am mechanically competent due to training and experience and know my own limits of competency and tools for repair. Here are the basics for reference of what was found. 1. The pcv valve (multiaire) had failed at the internal pintle, and was allowing crankcase air/oil to enter the intake at too high a volume. It was replaced. The map sensor set the P2173 code, then failed due to oil intrusion and was replaced. The rapid snapping of the throttle body under pressure uncalibrated the internal throttle position sensors, and could not maintain proper position was replaced. The intake manifold (newer design for the 2.0l i4 without the flapper controls just guide veins for the intake air) main gasket had shrunk in the plastic intake seat channel and was allowing outside air (P0171) to seep past the gasket on the lower lip of the gasket, and was also not sealing between the cylinders (gases were transferring between the cylinders). The throttle body gasket was pristine. During repair, pressure tested intake for leaks, and tubes and lines for cracks. Reading sae code P2173 was determined that code and subsequent limp mode was designed to prevent damage to the plastic intake manifold. It worked.

Finally got going and when i got back to work and park it wouldn't start after i went in and came back out. Got it jumped and went to both napa and auto zone both said it was mass airflow sensor. Got the part the from the dealership and replaced it. All was well till today 03/15/2018 check engine light comes back on and my car started hesistating on the highway and eventually stalling as i was pulling of to the access roads. Prior to hot air was blowing out of my a.C while the cold setting was on. Made my way to auto zone and they said it was P0171 running to lean/too much air. In the parking lot ensured the oil cap, dip stick, air filter cabin were all sealed tight, wires were fine, upon inspection of the air cleaner intake duct hose found out it was broken all the way around the hose. Called my extended warranty agent and he informed me that it is a common problem with this vehicle and that it may not be covered. If the extended warranty people and the manufactures know of this, why not mention it in the manual or have the techs who change our oil and air filters look at it and mention it to us since its right next to the air compartment. As i drove it back home to park, the engine stalled on me again luckily it was as i was parking.

In late 2018 i was notified by Subaru of the valve spring recall for my 2013 Brz. I carried my car in on march 31st 2020 to have the recall done. I picked my car up on april 9th 2020. On april 14th 2020, after exiting the highway, my engine stalled at a red light. It restarted on the first try with check engine light and traction light on. I drove the car directly back to the dealer to check that everything was done correctly. The diagnosis was fault P0017 and throttle body carbon up. The technician performed an ecm update and cleaned the throttle body and returned the car to me. No charges were incurred. On may 12th 2020 while driving, the check engine light and traction light came on once again. I again brought the car back into the dealer to be checked out. The diagnosis was fault P0171 system too lean. Checked for leaks and found none. The mass air flow sensor was cleaned and the car returned to me. No charges were incurred as it was admitted that debris could have gotten in the sensor while the engine was open performing the recall. On june 4th 2020 , after exiting the highway, the engine stalled again. This time 5 tries to restart the engine were to no avail. On the 6th try the engine finally restarted with no warning lights on. I drove the car back to the dealer. My car was kept for 1 week and the diagnosis was a bad mass air flow sensor. I was charged $651.44 to replace the sensor. My car was returned to me on june 12th 2020. On june 13th 2020 the check engine light and traction light was back on. When i carried my car in on march 31st 2020, there were no prior issues with the engine or any other component on the vehicle. The car drove and functioned perfectly fine. 2013 CHEVROLET SONIC with 80000.0 miles

My 2013 chevy Sonic developed ticking sound shortly after i bought it at 60000 miles. The ticking got worse over time and then check engine light came on. I scanned the codes and multiple four codes were found. P0171, P0496, P1101, and P2270. After doing some research it seemed to be that most cruze, Sonic, and trax vehicles all had the same issues. I took it to the dealer for diagnostics and was informed the vehicle needed a new intake manifold, purge valve, pcv hose, and valve cover. They called the dealership to see if there were any recalls and the only one was the valve cover but would have to pay for diagnostics to see if they would cover it or not. The breather diaphragm in the valve cover goes bad due to a fault intake manifold on these vehicle models. There is a little orange gasket in the manifold that goes bad and causes the diaphragm to go out resulting in having to replace the entire system. The intake manifold not only causes ghat issue but causes the car to get jumpy at stops and stalling out. Have almost had a few people rear end me due to this. The purge valve goes out as well and when at the fuel pump the car will hesitate to crank or run at very low idle shutting off multiple times before it starts up and then runs rough until a decent amount of fuel has ran through the engine. The car would not get enough fuel when at stops or on highways and would also just lose fuel and cut the engine off. Those components have since been replaced by myself and no more issues. Chevy will not recall the parts that are causing the issues and therefore there is a safety issue when out on the highways.

Gm part number 95027313 outlet duct connecting the air box to the throttle body has shredded in 30,000 miles of use. Took it to a Subaru dealer in berlin ct who found the following: "trouble code P0171/system to lean bank 1, fault traced and found vacuum leak around brake booster check valve. Vacuum valve cracked. Recommend replacing brake booster assembly". This vehicle has only 39,120 miles. This part is well protected within the engine area. Service repair described the part as a small plastic piece and stated he's never seen this happen before. To my way of thinking, the part had to be defective when the engine was built. Car was never in an accident and has always been maintained by Subaru dealers. Cost is a little over $700.00. I have the work order if you need it; but the wording above is directly from the order. Is there a way to start an investigation showing this is a manufacturers fault? Is there any way i can force Subaru to pay for this?

While driving home experienced sudden loss of power and rough shifting. No warning lights or indicators appeared. Vehicle smells like burnt oil, and noticed a loud ticking noise. Notified dealer and was told it is normal vehicle will be fine after 400 miles of driving. My families life will be placed in jeapordy for the next 400 miles. The van i bought was on 3/28/2010, the brake pad was very soft, i had to press very deep down ,i have been to the Honda dealer 3 times already for the same problems, but every time they found something wrong/broken , i had to pay out of my pocket. First was masterly cylinders has internal failure, , they replaced master cylinder on the date of 01/03/13, then they found air in brake fluid line and front rotors to be badly rusted, so they replaced front pads and machined front rotors on the date of 03/15/13, and then they found rear pads and rotors to be warped, they replaced the rear pads and rotors. Also the check engine light kept going on and off , i went to the dealer as well, this is they found code P0171 fuel system too lean , on the date of 05/28/13, and 06/14/13. , i took my car there again today the dealer still holding my car. On 1 september 2017, i parked my vw in my garage. There were no engine lights on or anything, but the car had been making a loud fan like noise after i removed the key fob from the ignition. Its been doing that since i bought it. I didn't start the car back up until 5 september 2017 after returning from a weekend with family. When i started my vw up i noticed that the engine light was now illuminated. I waited about a week before i took any action hoping that the light would just go away on its own, but it didn't. On 12 september i took the car to the nearest autozone and took advantage of their free engine light diagnostic check. The error codes read "P0171 system too lean (bank 1)" and "P12A2 fuel rail pressure sensor inappropriately high." at the top of the paper it stated that the most likely solution for these error codes was to replace the fuel pump. Once i returned home i called the local Volkswagen dealership and told them what the problem was, they told me that there was a recall out for my model vehicle, but there is no fix at the moment. I then went online to see for myself, the manufacturer recall number is: 20ae and the nhtsa manufacturer number is: 17v509. I am not sure what caused the vehicle to randomly start having these issues. I do not feel safe driving the car out of town anymore, i only drive it to and from work.

There was a recall reported 09/30/2009 on my type of car under campaign 09v377000 but my vin is not showing as affected by that campaign even though the code that is coming up is a similar issue. For the last month or so i had smelled gas fumes periodically when the my car was idling. A few days ago the car went into limp mode. I had the ecu code read at a local store and the technician there stated that the engine code was "P0171 system too lean (bank 1)". On monday i took the car to the local dealer. Their diagnosis was that the fuel line was deteriorating and needed replacement. They also indicated that the fuel line was leaking. Their explanation for the engine code was that while the car was running the fuel pressure expanded the fuel line. This expansion eventually reduced the fuel pressure to the point that the fuel injectors were not receiving adequate fuel and the ecu threw a code. While i do not know why the fuel line degraded, and there could be a number of causes, it does seem premature.

That fixed the problem for a short time, now i have another diagnostic code, 2 actually, P0171 and P0174. The message center for the fuel cap and these codes all said it is related to my emission system. I see one other person filed a complaint on here relative to the gas cap light coming on. We where driving to the store and on the way the check engine came on, so we pulled into the local autozone and they ran a scan for fault codes. It had a code P0171 which they said it coulf 1 of several posibilities and should have a repair shop perform a proper check to be sure what is actually going on. Well we continued on to the store, when coming to a stop my wife said we have no brakes, the pedal was going to the floor, we did come to a stop with hitting anything thank god. Well i drove from there back home very carefully. Once home i look under the hood for anything that be causing it to happen, and everything look inplace and ok. So next i got back into the car and push the brake pedal down and heard a loud air leaking from the brake pedal, i got down by the pedal and push on the the pedal with my hand and could hear air coming out the boot. I called a mechanic and explained to him what was happening and he said it is my power brake booster. Next i got on line and found that alot of 2007 Camry's with anywhere from 40,000 miles up to and over 200,000 that have the power brake booster failing, and when i tried to fine one for my car i found that there are none anywhere, even at the dealership. I did ask if they know of this problem and he paused for a moment, then said no. I believe this should be investigated be fore someone injured or killed.

2007 TOYOTA RAV4 with 73700.0 miles

First noticed the problem on 11/10/2014 when approaching a stop light. The Rav4 took longer than normal to come to a stop with greater force required to stop. Once fully stopped, the vehicle was idling with low rpm's (~500) and the check engine light turned on along with vsc and trac lights. Was able to drive the vehicle home, but experienced the same symptoms at every stop light / stop sign. Contacted Toyota dealership in tucson immediately and scheduled emergency service for the next morning. The Toyota dealership diagnosed the problem with two error codes (P0171 and P0174 - lean air/fuel mix). Was told they suspected a bad tank of gas. Toyota addressed one open recall (service campaign bst - reflash brake control computer) on my vehicle but did not investigate the error codes, only cleared them. The following day while driving home, the same issue occurred. Almost no brake pressure and barely able to stop. Check engine light, vsc, and trac lights all illuminated again. Low idle speed as well. Contacted a different local mechanic for a second opinion. Was informed the brake booster needed to be replaced due to damage in the diaphragm causing loss of vacuum pressure (which helped explain the two error codes related to lean air/fuel mix). Total repair bill over $1000. Just lucky nobody was injured due to failing brake system on Toyota's part.

Very strong fuel odor inside cabin of vehicle while driving. Odor is very strong around drivers rear wheel and from the outside once parked. Smell of fuel is very strong at times while driving but seems to dissipate when driving at a faster speed i.E. On highway over 45mph. Once i come to a stop or drive below 45mph the smell is pronounced probably because it isn't being blown away from the vehicle while driving. Does not change in correlation to fuel tank fill level. Inspected fuel sender under access cap, underneath rear passenger bench driver's side on august 27th 2016. Found fuel puddling in/around the exterior of fuel sending unit. Ii was lucky not to get smashed,as the light changed while my vehicle was sputtering. Mil on various misfire related dtc's P0300 - po306 and P0316 issue 12/31/05 my 2006 Ranger with 69,000 mi displays all for the issues indicated on this tsb. This malfunction causes the mil lamp to continually display trouble codes P0302 and P0316. Because of this, my vehicle will not pass the ca state emissions inspection. The tsb states that if diagnostic tests indicate an engine exhaust valve seat recession, the cylinder heads will need to be replaced with the new service heads and is to be covered under emission warranty. I took the vehicle to the Ford dealership. Pacfic Ford redid the diagnosis and stated the issue was outlined in the tsb. They also stated that the parts were not covered by either the new vehicle or emissions warranty coverage. I called the Ford crc and was told there was nothing they could do to assist with payment to correct their defective part. The failure is not being corrected at this time.

We called gm and was told to take the car to a dealer. Against our better judgment we had no other options available and finally took it to our local gm dealer and was told the service tech downloaded software to address a P0171 code, which cost us over $300 and to drive it 200 more miles, bring it back for a test. The system still did not reset and the car will not pass emissions. We asked the service manager for other options and all he could give us was lip service (useless rambling), possible troubleshooting repairs and more money. Took it into Chevrolet dealership (harbor, 9911 w 300 n, michigan city, in. Phone (219) 210-4266.) after the service department investigated, they reported that the issue was a burned out drivers door module that had obvious charring on it. The service tech noted on invoice sheet that he found the engine light was indicating a P0171 diagnostic issue which he traced to the "failed/shorted" driver door module. The solution was to replace the module and program the new module. The next day after getting back the vehicle, the engine warning light came on again. A check by me using my obd unit shows that once again the P0107 is the issue. I have also again heard crackling in the door, but no electrical issues seen thus far. Will be heading back to dealership first chance that i get. Cost of the unit replacement was $524.62.

I took the vehicle to the shop to get it checked on 11-21-11. We took the vehicle thinking that a piston was bad, because that was the way it felt, like not getting the right pressure from the piston once the brakes were activated/pressed. Once we got the call back from mechanic, he stated that we needed new rotors due to both being warped. I thought that that will take the problem away but once we got the truck back, immediately within days the problem came back. We took the vehicle back to the shop and they stated it was a tire the one causing the noise and rattle once the brakes were pressed. At the shop, they replaced the front brake pads as well as the disc brake rotors, they applied lug nut torque 100, inflation 35/35, cleaned and adjusted rear brakes. After all of this was done, i still get engine lights on the dash board. I took the truck to get it tested at autozone for free and got this code on their machine oem number to cross: P0171 definition: fuel trim bank one condition explanation: the power train control module uses the oxygen sensor to calculate the air/fuel ratio of the engine. The computer has recognized a rich or lean condition on one bank only. Probable cause: a1. If bank one and two set together suspect fuel pressure or maf (mass air flow) sensor a2. Oxygen sensor defective. A3. Ignition misfire-repair. A4. Fuel injector problem. I have not used my truck for the past 2 and a half months for fear of having an accident if breaks fail to do their job or lock up while braking. It is stressful enough if computers/mechanics nor dealers make up their mind about what the codes are or mean. I also notice the the button for the all wheel drive does not work anymore and that is being in that stage since the problem started. If anyone has a solution to this issue, please let me know. Thank you.
