P0496

EVAP Flow During A Non-Purge Condition

DTC P0496, sometimes indicated as P049600 is an OBD diagnostic trouble code indicating a generic fault with the vehicle powertrain (i.e. engine and gearbox). This code identifies an error with the auxiliary emissions system causing evap flow during a non-purge condition.

The evaporative emissions control system is designed to prevent fuel vapors from escaping into the atmosphere. When the system detects a leak, it will activate the purge valve to release pressure and draw in fresh air. This DTC indicates that the EVAP system is not functioning properly, most likely due to a leak.
There are several possible causes for this DTC, including a defective EVAP canister, a loose or damaged fuel cap, a leak in the fuel system, or a defective purge valve.
To troubleshoot this DTC, start by checking the fuel cap for damage or a loose fit. If the fuel cap is loose or damaged, replace it. Next, check the EVAP canister for damage or leaks. If there is damage or a leak, replace the canister. Finally, check the purge valve for damage or a leak. If there is damage or a leak, replace the valve.

2019 FORD ESCAPE

Purchased vehicle in october of 2019, in february 2020 had engine light come on and the code P0496 which is a purge valve error and took to service and they stated that Ford had to have this happen twice, so on march 17, 2020, it happened again and was taken to service again and it was replaced. Almost 1 year later, on february 27,2021 the check engine light came on and was taken back to service on march 2 and was replaced again. No recalls on this vehicle , but there should be. This should have happened on a new vehicle nor should it continue to happen! It is now on its 3 rd purge valve!!!

2013 CHEVROLET SONIC with 80000.0 miles

My 2013 chevy Sonic developed ticking sound shortly after i bought it at 60000 miles. The ticking got worse over time and then check engine light came on. I scanned the codes and multiple four codes were found. P0171, P0496, P1101, and P2270. After doing some research it seemed to be that most cruze, Sonic, and trax vehicles all had the same issues. I took it to the dealer for diagnostics and was informed the vehicle needed a new intake manifold, purge valve, pcv hose, and valve cover. They called the dealership to see if there were any recalls and the only one was the valve cover but would have to pay for diagnostics to see if they would cover it or not. The breather diaphragm in the valve cover goes bad due to a fault intake manifold on these vehicle models. There is a little orange gasket in the manifold that goes bad and causes the diaphragm to go out resulting in having to replace the entire system. The intake manifold not only causes ghat issue but causes the car to get jumpy at stops and stalling out. Have almost had a few people rear end me due to this. The purge valve goes out as well and when at the fuel pump the car will hesitate to crank or run at very low idle shutting off multiple times before it starts up and then runs rough until a decent amount of fuel has ran through the engine. The car would not get enough fuel when at stops or on highways and would also just lose fuel and cut the engine off. Those components have since been replaced by myself and no more issues. Chevy will not recall the parts that are causing the issues and therefore there is a safety issue when out on the highways.

2013 GMC TERRAIN

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 Gmc Terrain. The contact stated that the service engine indicator illuminated and an abnormal noise was heard. In addition, the instrument panel shorted out due to an electrical failure, which also caused all the gauges and warning indicators not to function. The dealer (carlsbad buick Gmc cadillac, 5334 paseo del norte, carlsbad, ca 92008, (760) 438-5311) was notified of the failures. The dealer found diagnostic failure codes P0496, P0171, and P0174, which detected pressure in the evaporative system. The dealer stated that more diagnostic testing would be needed to determine a remedy. The vehicle was also taken to suburban cadillac of costa mesa (2600 harbor blvd, costa mesa, ca 92626, (877) 844-8058) where an appointment for diagnostic testing was scheduled. The contact received a document that did not specifically indicate that it was a manufacturer recall. The contact called the manufacturer to determine if they sent her a campaign notice pertaining to the electrical and engine components for case number: [xxx]. The vehicle was not repaired. 2012 CHEVROLET TRAVERSE with 33000.0 miles

I have had many ongoing issues since car purchase. Electrical , air conditioning and injector issues. Car does not seem safe. Lights go out every few months whilde driving when it is dark. This is very dangerous. 1st replacement on light was done while under warrant, however, chevy dealer failed to address the issues causing the light to burn out and simply changed light out. It has been continuous with us changing lights, brake lights and headlights. Car would lose power and jerk as well as had gears problems while traveling on a fwy with cars going an average og 60 mph. Car would not auto shift above 20-30 mph. Gas smell upon start of vehicle and the list goes on. Performed injector balance test found bank 1 injector out of specs.Replaced 1 3 5 injectors. It seems that there is a possibility that the injector issues may have caused other problem with the vehicle which cannot be denied nor confirmed. An oil pan gasket has been leaking as well when less than 90,000 miles. Safety has been an ongoing concern. I am requesting that the electrical issues that have not been resolved since the 1st light went out in 2014 to be resolved at gms cost. In addition i am asking that the oil pan gasket replacement be done at gm cost . In addition, i am requesting reimbursement of my down payment of $10,000 on my vehicle.

2011 DODGE CHARGER with 68000.0 miles

Filled gas tank on way to work. Got in car to go to lunch and noticed a strong gas smell. Called my husband (he is an ase certified master tech, gm master tech.) he informed me there must be a fuel leak. Then the check engine light came on, he put his scanner on it and it pulled a code of P0496 (small leak detected). The smell would go away when the gas level was under 1/2 tank. Would only fill to 1/2 after that. After a week or so the smell would come back with only 1/2 tank of gas. The check engine light has stayed on all this time. Husband pulled the rear seat out on july 11th to discover fuel pooling from the right rear passenger fuel module, the gas was leaking through the plastic. Contacted the Dodge dealership and they were unaware of any problems like this. July 12th we ordered a new bosch premium fuel pump (part# 67774). On july 17th i ran the fuel down so only 1 gallon was left in tank. Let the car sit for 2 hrs. Husband removed the main pump, which fell apart. Upon removing the primary fuel pump (right side) the pressure was so strong it blew fuel all over him and the interior of the back seat. The pump holds fuel pressure for way to long after it is turned off. Not to mention that there is only 2 pieces of plastic/foam between the fuel pumps and the back seat. That, in itself is dangerous. Is the excessive pressure what caused the plastic fuel pump to crack and allow the fuel to pool on top? I love my car but am very afraid to drive it now. I am not only concerned for my safety but also the safety of anyone sitting in the backseat (kids/grandkids). What if i get rear ended and there is a spark that ignites the pooled fuel, will chrysler then issue a recall for this problem after my car explodes? There are several complaints on this website for the same issue. Can't the nhtsa do something to help? Ma 10/8 updated 11/28/2017*cn
